Was the game in color?
If no, then I might have a guess (that I can't verify because of work), but... there was an old-school Macintosh game, back in the Mac Classic days where you had a ship that you flew around, landed on planets, and explored. It was really a Star-Trek rip off (I think the ship avatar even looked like the Enterprise).

That description reminds me of an old Apogee game. Can't remember its name though.. dammit. Give me a few minutes.
That game was called Raptor.
Yeah, I remember Raptor, but I don't remember being able to pick crew or "control a guy for missions" and Raptor's not isometric...
I was thinking of some other game.. I thought it was Apogee but maybe not.
I remember a game like the OP is referring, but I only had played its demo on an old PC Gamer magazine demo disc or something.
something like that sounds like it could be right (a demo disc on an old PC Gamer magazine). i think games like these tended to get bundled up and they would just give you the full version cuz they were selling or so little otherwise.
also just checked raptor - it's not that one. It's not an game from the XCom series either.
Star Flight would be perfect if not for isometric missions, availability on cd-rom and in a computer store in 1996, and for the blowing things up on land. Hmm... Star Flight did get ported many years later to the Mega Drive with an updated version, maybe that was ported to the pc?
Rohan on
...and I thought of how all those people died, and what a good death that is. That nobody can blame you for it, because everyone else died along with you, and it is the fault of none, save those who did the killing.
Hmm... Most of the games I thought of have been mentioned.
Funnily enough, I've been looking for an old game too. Got a demo in the late nineties on a PC Gamer demodisc.
All I can remember was it was a RTS, set on a planet. You could make new vehicles from various parts in a creator, and name the created vehicle.
The parts included tracks or a hover lower part, radars, weapons, and a cloaking device (which for some reason, I remember looking like a crystal dome). For some reason, I can remember some of the vehicle parts, but not the game (mainly because I hadn't played a game where you could build units before).

I played a very similar sounding game for PS1 however. Called Warzone 2100, you could create units out of a certain amount of parts you had aquired.
Intercepter was released around 2000 wasn't it? That would make it too new.
according to Wiki it came out '98.
Which may be too late still. I honestly thought it came out a couple of years earlier than that.
Wow... I thought I remembered hearing about it coming out when I was later in high school. I'd never played XCOM but a couple times on a friends computer before my junior year.

Probably Warzone. It was released for the PC initially before being ported to the PS1. There was a sequel as well but I can't remember what it was called (Warzone something, just a later date).
you definitely fly the ship and battle with it. from what i recall it wasn't as pixelated as some of the games that have been suggested. definitely no 3-d in the game.

Ok, so are we talking top down or side scrolling shoot-em up style ship combat? Or zipping around like Escape Velocity or Asteroids? Or are you inside the ship?

I wouldn't say it's that bad, he only posted it 4 hours ago.
BTW, are you certain that it was a PC game? Could it have been a SNES game or something?
4 hours is approximately 480 times the amount of time it normally takes us to get it.
Escape Velocity Nova?

plus my brother purchased the game from compusa as a cd-rom game.
neither of those, i think they've been mentioned already
if it helps i think it came from the discount software aisle from compusa roughly in 1996
What about my other guesses:
Privateer: Righteous Fire
Space Rogue
Star Control
Star Control II
Space Rangers
Terminus

None of these games
space rangers and terminus are definitely too new
the game was definitely in color
Star General
Star Crusader

because it was the answer to my last "name this game" thread.
And it wasn't on a mac, right?
nope, never owned a mac b4

$15 download. And yes, it is kickass.
Nothing's forgotten, nothing is ever forgotten

Thats pretty god damn steep for a 10 year old twitch shooter.
And its still only DOS. For 15 fucking bucks they can't port that thing? What cheap bastards.

Edit: adurr, overlooked it in the op. Nevermind.
I don't remember if that game actually had out-of-ship combat....

Fantastic series that I tried in vain to buy a copy of after playing the awesome demo.

i guess since it was purchased from the discount software aisle, there IS a possibility that no one else has played it before.
I'm starting to think it's either a dream or he's confused two different games into one.
It's also possible that it was a very obscure shareware game though, I guess.
