Star Trek and Superman: Two of the greatest franchies with horrible games
Ok, so let me beat my nerd chest a bit here. I own almost 2,000 Superman comics. That's not comics in general, but Superman comics. I grew up loving the character, have all of the movies and the animated, and a whole lot of toys. Hell, I dropped $100 on a 13 inch Superman figure (and a 13 inch Luthor figure). Anyway, my love for Star Trek is similar. Having grown up with Next Gen and the original series, I've always loved the Star Trek universe, which goes hand in hand with my fondness of Sci Fi.
Now, as a gamer, it is extremely frustrating that these two franchises can not get a good game. I mean, the possibilities are endless, but they are never given to a competent developer. Am I destined to never have a great Superman game? I mean, Superman 64 anyone? The titles that have come after that have been nothing short of mediocre. And developers seemed determine to frame Star Trek titles around space battles, which is not the heart of the series. I want some good games goddammit.
What are you talking about? Star Trek is the one franchise that has gotten some awesome games. I really like Starfleet Command and Elite Force. Bridge Commander was good too.
Yes, you're destined to never have a great Superman game. While people say that he's too perfect to be interesting (which is incorrect), he is too perfect to be in a great game.
There are some awesome Star Trek games. Two that stand out in my mind are Star Trek: 25th Anniversary and Star Trek Voyager: Elite Force.
25th Anniversary is exactly like a Lucas Arts point and click adventure set in the Star Trek universe, with all the original cast doing the voices. Even Shatner! It's awesome.
Elite Force amazingly overcomes the fact that it's based on Voyager. It's a Half Life clone where you're a bad-ass Federation marine. I particularly love the Phaser's secondary fire button. Vaporizes your target just like on the show. It's beyond awesome.
Yeah, I absolutely LOVED 25th Anniversary. The best part was that the away teams always consisted of Kirk, Spock, Bones, and ENSIGN REDSHIRT. The missions were always about Kirk being as much of an asshole as possible, and finding the most interesting way for the redshirt to get killed.
The redshirt even acted as a sort of extra life / screw up buffer. Fighting Klingons? He'll get shot first, to allow you one mistake in case you don't solve the puzzle or whatever in time. My only real complaint with the game was the space combat sucked. I never beat the final fight at the end because of it.
And Elite force was surprisingly enjoyable as well. I liked how they actually used Star Trek technology to account for gameplay staples. Personal shield generator = health bar, and personal transporter = answer to the classic question of "Where does FPS-HeroMan stick 11 guns?"

As I recall, your ship's stats improved with your success rate on missions. I never could beat that last fight until I started over and aced ever single mission. No red shirts died on my watch. :-D
Bridge Commander remains one of my all-time favourite games to date, mostly because of the huge amount of mods that sprung up for it. If I'm not mistaken, there's still a big forum centred around developing ships and addons for it.
I didn't really play Elite Force much, but I was into Elite Force 2 multiplayer when that came out. That was fun too.
There was nothing like flying the Enterprise with the numberpad (Woo Starfleet Academy) and systematically disabling an enemy ship. So much fun was had in random skirmish modes.

Anyone else play Birth of the Federation? It was kind of like MOO2 with a star trek skin... actually it was exactly like MOO2 with a star trek skin, and it was glorious.
Also the first level of Elite Force, where you're in a holodeck borg simulation was incredible. It was an absolutely perfect portrayal of a borg encounter from the show.

Was wondering when someone would mention Birth of the Federation
BotF never quite left my gaming playlist.
As for the first level of Elite Force...wished i had some kind of punching ability. Borg adapting is not cool if i can't phaser-whip them. (Not like it'll help)
I always tried to get into Bridge Commander. I loved the concept, and it had an awesome presentation, but I could never figure out how to kill things. It took like 20 minutes every time.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
A) It's not a Superman game. It has Superman in it, with limited powers, but it hardly constitutes as a game that explores the capabilities of Superman.
It looks abhorrent. Seriously, it's like the Sarah Palin of videogames. It is, for some reason, not being utterly ridiculed as a piece of shovelware, despite the fact that every piece of video footage we've seen of it is laughable when considering the fact that we live in 2008, and it has to compete with games like Street Fighter 4.
Oh, but I guess the Joker has a cool fatality.

That guy in the MK game is NOT Superman. He may be wearing a blue suit with a cape, but everything down to his looks and mannerisms is just NOT Superman.

I enjoyed it, but ultimately my games came down to how long I could avoid being invaded by the borg, who would tear through all of my ships like tissue paper. I could not figure out how to actually destroy one of their cubes.

Birth of the Federation was okay, but it wasn't that much like MOO2. It was also absurdly difficult.

Macs had one of my favourite star trek games ever. Rescue!
It was just a fanmade shareware game, and it used the music from "V". And later versions had star trek content removed after paramount got annoyed, but it was awesome.

Star Trek has a lot of great games, but the good to poor ratio is horrid. My fave is SFC - it is just a great starship battle simulation, it still would be awesome without the Trek.
Superman.... Has it had anything good with the exception of that one arcade game? It was a Final Fight clone and IIRC it was fun, but I haven't seen it in 15 years.

.....I remember playing an enjoying Superman beat 'em up side-scroller arcade game many, many years ago. But then, I'm a sucker for side-scrolling beat 'em ups.
Blizzard (yes, the WoW Blizzard) actually made a SNES Superman beat-em-up game that focused on the death and return arc. It was all right.
The Superman Returns game, while atrocious, had a lot of good IDEAS that just never came into any kind of fruition. I will give it its flying engine. That was perfect. Unfortunately there was nothing else in the game to fucking DO.
Cryptic's Star Trek Online may finally give Star Trek a good solid mainstream game. It's got my interest in that I've been following it regularly since it was officially announced. That's more than I've done for any other MMO lately.
Seriously, how were you supposed to fight those fuckers? They would just turn up and wreck my shit every time. Dammit.
That was a great game.
Yep, hated them. I once had something like two dozen ships right on the planet the Borg were attacking.
Tell each of them what to do.
All I saw in the action screen was the Cube firing, and next turn, I had something like three ships. Those bionic bastard are seriously powerful. Almost as powerful as the Edo "God". Took a fleet, but finally purged the fucker.
The idea of an invincible Superman and a life bar for the city is absolutely brilliant.
The flying wasn't bad.
Everything else - ugh.
I maintain that a Superman game could be made that is excellent, if you're not making the unstoppable Silver Age Superman.
If you get closer to the Justice League Supes, who can be stunned by strong enough attacks but never really damaged unless it's by cosmically poweful foes like Darkseid, you can make a great game.
Fighting little individual mooks as Superman in Returns was horribly boring and unsatisfying. When I punch a robot as Superman, that robot should blow apart or be flung hundreds of feet into the air. Fighting mooks should be about reveling in your incredible power and speed. The difficulty should not be in blocking their attacks and doing enough damage to each enemy, it should be in using the right strategy to save citizens and property - flinging enemies into each others, using the environment in the least damaging way, pursuing the right groups of enemies and prioritizing your targets. Activating super speed to save falling citizens and stop bullets and stand in front of attacks from mooks that would otherwise struck vulnerable Metropolitan men and women would be key - activating superspeed is like a very powerful bullet-time from Fear, and you can lock and dart to intervene in certain situations.
Then you'd have the epic boss battles, and here's the important part: destructible buildings. The other import part is a sense of force. If Supes dukes it out with a giant robot, it should crush buildings and it should punch you into craters in the ground. If he dukes it out with Bizarro, they should be punching each other through buildings. Boss battles and fights against powerful opponents should be very common.
Once in a while you'd encounter Kryptonite or foes who tote it, and your life bar would pop up without warning. When the player is used to invincibility, this should scare the crap out of them. Maybe certain foes like Darkseid or Doomsday could actually damage you for real without even using Kryptonite as well.
Multiplayer would ideally exist, and be like a hilarious fighting game wherein you can play heroes and villains similar to Supes - Wonder Woman, Martian Manhunter, Captain Marvel, Doomsday, Darkseid, etc - and punch each other around. Perhaps these characters would be unlockable and playable. Another multiplayer mode that would be more involved is one player being the villain trying to trash the city by deploying henchmen and more powerful villains, while the other player as Supes tries to stop them.

Birth of the Federation is still installed on my computer. Great game. I would really like a 3D update for it, though.
Also really loved Bridge Commander. I need to play it again now that the mods have had time to mature.
I was going to say A Final Unity as far as Trek titles go.
I really enjoyed the away team aspect of the game and how different crew members provided different puzzle solutions. (When I first figured out that beaming the section of pipe off the woman wouldn't kill her I was amazed.)
For Superman games there have been two that defied the curse. Death & Return of Superman on the SNES, the old Superman-Red/Superman-Blue arcade beat'em up.
