The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
If this is successful we can expand it. I wanna keep things simple considering everyone has work/school/lives, etc. We don't wanna get this too bogged down.
Can those of us that aren't participating in the battle thread get included on the character selection screen as locked characters?
Although I don't know if you plan to show character sprites when they're selected or just their portraits.

Not being a regular, or a battle thread participant, the only way I'm lettin' ya in is if your sprites are pretty good. And seeing as how that last sprite you posted was decent I'ld say sure.
I'll update the select screen this weekend. Make it a little spiffier. And include some of youse guys who has started making sprites.
The arm closest to us doesn't really look fight-ready. It's pulled back too much and a little on the high side. It leaves his ribs exposed and it would make it more difficult for him to get a decent swing. Also, the knuckles on the fist are pointed down. It would REALLY hurt to hit someone with this fist, and it makes it look like he's going to stab someone or snap his fingers instead of hit them (he's not supposed to be a stabby character, right?) If you're going for a punch stance, line the knuckles up so their surface is more perpendicular to his arm and relax the arm a bit. Ken's 3rd Strike Sprite is a good model for this kind of "get your dukes up" stance. It illustrates what I'm trying to say way better than my words are. http://members.tripod.com/streetfighter_3/sf3_ken_stance.gif
Edit: Ken's hands are a little opened/relaxed in that sprite, but I think it illustrates what I'm talking about
Well, if Japanese boxing anime have a say in reality (honestly, what better source!) then having your palms relaxed/unclenched in the correct pose. You keep them relaxed during the wind-up and only form a full fist right before impact.
Also, some minor corrections/modifications. Should prolly make a portrait next.
[edit] Damned stray pixels, I need to make my transparent colour background green or something. Light yellow is too hard to miss.
is there anyway we could start a seperate thread for the game with all the info in the OP? I'm having trouble finding the reuirements for the character select screen. I'm also still stuck trying to merge my layers.
I'm gonna put together the character select screen tonight/tomorrow. I don't care if noobs want to join in as long as they are participating in the battle thread. Obvious exceptions will be made for regulars and those with outstanding sprites.
I'm only gonna use a few of the people who've posted in this thread for the first selection. Just because you're not in there doesn't mean you won't be allowed in. I just wanna get a loose framework up and running first.
I'm aiming to have a draft up by midday tomorrow. Late tonight if I get lucky. So if you want to get into the first cut put your stuff up quickly.
EDIT: Try and get a standing animation going. It doesn't need to be final and perfect (it can be revised later). 5 or 6 frames is all that's needed
aight. I spent a couple hours throwing together a demo of the character select screen. Things are fairly ugly right now (what do you expect for a couple hours). If anyone would like to help designing some of the menus and background screens let me know.
I'll support this as much as the community does. If you want to be added to the select screen you need two things:
1) a 64 x 64 portrait of the character (head shot)
2) a standing animation 165 x 165 as many frames as you'ld like (this will be the fighting stance in game)
There's no color limits, no style restrictions, etc. lay your sprites all out on one sheet (see my examples towards the top of the page).
Like I said. I'll carry this as far as everyone is willing to support it.
EDIT: regardless of wether this goes anywhere or not this thread should be supported for sprites and animation.
Wrong. You will keep it, because I'm telling you that you need him to have "snap" attacks; "snap" punches, "snap" dodges, and "snap" kicks. Or in other words, awesomeness.
Just make a Beholder-like floating blue Pac-Man with horns. EmoticonMan!
[edit] Crummy portrait, but I didn't want to just crop the sprite. It's not contrasted enough and looks a touch blurry when sized down like this, so I may redo it later.

Not sure what the interface will be like yet but we should probably have a similar background to our avatars. I'll post up my idle stance soon.
alright. I said I was gonna update the select screen this weekend but I got tired of digging through the threads trying to figure out who wanted in and who was ready. Soooo...
If you want to be updated into the Select Screen you need two things.
1) character portrait 64x64
2) standing animation (165x165 at least 5 or 6 frames, more is fine)
I need these in .png formats with the transparency set. If you don't have a way of getting them into a .png format let me know and I'll do it for ya (if it's not too many people).
Please respond to this thread with the sprite lists you want used linked in it. And I'll start getting you guys in this week.
Note also that I'm not reall worried about wether you are able to finish the rest of the required sprite lists at this point in time. If we get that far we'll just remove those characters who aren't playable.
Here's mine, in a handy zip; it skirts the rules a touch, but since it's just for the character select screen I'm hoping that's not an auto disqualification.
Would that work in the game though? I thought it would only work with pixel animations. That looks like flash or imageready moving parts to me.
Not trying to knock it, it's really cool. I'm just curious.
Actually the whole thing was done in photoshop, I created the .gif in imageready (though I could have just as easily done it in any .gif making program). If I used flash the arms and legs probably wouldn't be so wobbley!

Am I doing it wrong? I'm drawing it zoomed in like 5 times, using 165x165 canvas. Pencil tool. wtf....zzzzorzxxzx ahhg.
EDIT: Man, I need some C&C lollll.
How many frames is that?
Is he about to start dancing or what?
Try not having black lines for everything.
Why do you say that?
Kk : ) thanks.
You really don't see it? :?
Kinda looks like he's snappin his fingers and slidin to the side... oooor about to throw some capoera moves.

When somebody connects with an uppercut in the game, this guy should pop out and yell Toasty!

9 Frames total, 7 unique frames. Wind-up and the lunge I doubled a frame to enhance the timing and the fluidity of the punch.
That's what I saw as well. (linked because it is by far my favorite music creation ever.)

Blurp!
EDIT (curse .gif format and transparent cells):
1. I got the frames pretty wrong, this is how it should look like:
2. 3 days for alltogether & redrawn with mouse:

You finally got that all worked out huh Tim? Looks cool.
Astorite - I like it. Your pixel style reminds me of Shaq-fu!

It was a crummy portrait anyway. Here's one I'm actually reasonably pleased with. I figured it should be done in the same style as the actual figure.
Also... Cool beyond words.

Anyways, that's the deal. Let me have 'em

what do you think a gif is made of?
he just needs to convert it to png

EDIT: I found this tutorial about pixel art just now, it seems pretty helpful for those who don't know where to start: http://web.cs.wpi.edu/~imgd1001/a06/samples/pixel-artist/default.htm
Do you want each individual frame or all the frames in one image?
Not a character entry, just getting a feel for sprites.
