NEW uses for OLD technology

So I was putzing around on Youtube the other day and I came across this...well, watch it.

Weeaboos especially apply

Asides from the incredible amount of detail and effort that went into this and the fact that it does in fact sound quite pleasant, what's actually amazing is that it demonstrates a rather nice recycling of an old technology that had been outdone on pretty much every level. Let's face it: midis suck and have been outdone by MP3s, oggs, and countless other formats that have sprung up over the years and have been pretty much forgotten save for the odd person who uses them instead of the aforementioned formats for their ringtone. But somewhere, somehow, somebody got a rather interesting idea on how to use and exploit them - and suddenly what was once something considered only in legacy terms was found new light and life as a piece of video and audio art.

And now I'm curious as to what other sorts of stuff like this has emerged in recent years - say, like someone's succussful programming of a digital camera to dump its firmware in binary in the form of flashes from its busy light whose whine an audio sensor detects and writes as an audio file, which is then converted by another utility to the firmware proper.

(The reason I put this in G&T as opposed to the pure tech forum is due to the potential/probability of some of these entries being game-related - Audiosurf, for example, is a rather interesting use of mp3s in an extremily unique and unorthodox way)

EDIT: Oh god how did those two get switched D:

My MegaDrive holds a loose socket in place so that the connection is not lost to the splitter that powers my 360, PS3, Wii, HDTV and my laptop charger.

In effect, it is the fountain of youth keeping everything else alive, nourishing them with refreshing electricity.

Without it, every other console I own would die.

Little did SEGA know all those years ago they were essentially manufacturing God.

The same thing was done (sort of) with Morse Code in the 1970s - Ronnie Hazlehurst wrote the theme to Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em by converting the letters to their Morse Code equivalents, then playing the result on a piccolo. Barrington Pheloung occasionally wrote the music for Inspector Morse in teh same way, with clues to the episode's mystery in the music. So, I guess, it's an example of 1840's technology being used for 20th century entertainment.

Edit: Although I guess this counts as old technology being used in even older technology.

Check out the Radiohead video for their song "Nude."
