Good Morning Forum!
I've found myself with a job that requires a large amount of sitting around in a chair every day with nothing to do. I've traditionally been a PC gamer but to fill those long hours I've decided to dip into the forbidden fruit of Console. More specifically, Portables.
After much research and calling of friends, I'm leaning towards the PSP instead of the DS and here's why:
- Better Graphics. I'm a PC gamer so Graphics tend to matter and I can't help but look at the DS and see my SNES.
- Bigger Single Screen. Plus, the PSP-3000 is coming out next week and it looks beautiful and vibrant.
- The ability to watch and buy episodes and movies via the Playstation Store. (My computer is my baby and I prefer to treat her with only legal and clean methods of getting video.
My primary concern is software selection. It just flat seems like PSP has less games. My favorite developer is SquareEnix, my favorite franchise is Final Fantasy and the inclusion of Final Fantasy 4 and Final Fantasy Tactics A2 on the DS were nearly enough to drive me there. In a game I look for deep storylines, well-crafted characters, and mature (non-kiddish) games. Or just a ton of fun and humor (LEGO Batman looks fun)
So I'm looking for advice. More specifically, I'm looking for gamers somewhat similar to myself that have had positive (or negative?) experience with the PSP. Most of what I Google randomly online to compare the DS and PSP is 2-3 years old. These forums have always given me great direction for software choices so I'll turn to you again:
How's the current situation with PSP game choices? How's the upcoming situation? After 3 years of going at it and Nintendo winning every round, are Software Developers primarily concerned with getting their licenses out to DS? Who really loves their DS and why?
Thanks in advance! You guys rock. 8-)

If you like video games, then you will like the DS. The DS has a whole lot of good ones.
Here is a completly honest opinion.
I bought a PSP a few months ago. About a month in, I stepped on it during a road trip and it broke. If it had been a DS it would not have broken of that I'm 100 percent sure of. PSP has a sweet screen which displays beautiful graphics, but the software selection is lacking compared to the DS.
The DS, I've owned 3 times. Sold it twice, just recently bought my third one (this should tell you something right there the fact that I've been brought back into the fold 3 times). In my opinion the DS is a much more sturdy portable, and fits far better into a back pocket. The software selection is ridiculously huge, with a massive cross section of games from every genre -- including completely new one's that are DS platform specific.
To put it another way, I could have dropped money to get my PSP fixed or buy a new DS. I got the DS. It's true, the graphics on a DS aren't the equivilant of a full fledge console (it could be argued that the PSP is essentially a shrunk down PS2), however, when I'm gaming on the go I don't NEED the power of a full fledge console ... I need something portable, and most imporant something that is sturdy.
Graphics aside, the DS offers so much in terms of innovative gameplay, as well as a huge software selection ... and cheaper price to boot.
I'd go with the DS. The PSP is a sweet system, but in my opinion it's far too fragile and bulky to really be used in a truly portable manner.
It has some other features that are nice, but from what I head, there's a DS revision on the way that will have simmilar features (MP3 player, web browser, etc).
But, since you're asking, I've never had any trouble with my PSP. Works like a charm.
Long answer : Monster Hunter Freedom 2

From 2006 who doesn't take a solid stance on either platform? I doubt it personally.
Anyway, Xander, go for the DS.
I have both systems and while I'm having fun with FF Crisis Core on the PSP, I have a TON more games for the DS. As for graphics, you might be disappointed when you actually see games on the PSP screen. Some games, like Crisis Core and God of War, have really taken the PSP to a new level graphically, but most games previous to those two that use 3D effects have this annoying graininess to them. Watching movies on the PSP really isn't that comfortable or enjoyable in my opinion, I have an HD TV at home, why do I need to watch movies I already own on a MUCH smaller screen.
I'm not going to lie, there are a few games on PSP that really shine, but I think over all as someone who owns video games systems in order to play games, I'd choose the DS every time. As a fan of Final Fantasy games you've got FFIV, FFTA2 (AWESOME), and FF Revenant Wings (Eh, not as awesome) vs Crisis Core (Pretty damn good), FFT War of the Lions (Which is the original Tactics with a great new translation but HORRIBLE slow down during battles. Spell effects make that game chug like a son of a gun.) and the remakes of I and II (And how many times over do I own those now? They are really nice remakes though.). You've got Disidia coming up, but that's looking a little weird and the FFXIII spin-off is card based and that's kind of a put-off for me.
Ultimately, the decision is yours to make. I don't always trust reviews, but you may want to check out a site like MetaCritic or something similar and check out what they list the top reviewed games as and how much they appeal to you.
My vote, however, goes towards the DS.
If you are going to be taking the system with you "everywhere" the DS can handle being accidently dropped (or stepped on!) far better than a PSP.
This, a thousand times this. Goddamn they might as well call it the Playstation Monsterhunterportable.
There's other games too I guess. And homebrew.
But Monster Hunter.
Longer answer: The meme of "OLOL NO GOOD GAMES ON THE PSP" should have died out long ago, but hasn't. There's plenty to play on a PSP. If you want one, go for it.
That said, the DS has a library that blows the PSP's out of the water. This isn't a sleight against the PSP, the DS is basically the PS2 of this generation. The range and number of titles it has is much much greater and if you missed out on the GBA games the difference becomes even wider.
Ideally, you really would want both, but I have to recommend the DS over the PSP at this point in time. You get access to every Final Fantasy from 1-6 (partly through the GBA slot) as well as the Fire Emblem and Advance Wars series if SRPGs are your thing (Advance Wars is less the RPG though) and many many many RPGs (Chrono Trigger!) either out or on the way out for the DS.
Uh.....huh. Okay.
I bust out the PSP for gaming about once a year. I've been playing DS games back to back to back this entire year, only breaking for Brawl, Kart, and a few games on other systems. DS averages a good two or three games worth owning a MONTH.
The PSP is like that vapid hot girl who was kinda fun for a one night stand. The DS is the girl who fucks real good and nasty and who you can bring home to mom.
No one has ever enjoyed a PSP.
Ever.
Right now, how "good" these systems libraries are, to you, depends on what you want out of the system.
That said, both systems have solid libraries, but the NDS has a larger and more varied library. But if you really must have zomg graffix!1!1one, then you might as well get a PSP and just partake in the smaller yet still decent library.
How does the future look as far as game libraries go? Well, the PSP has seen pretty severe developer drop off in the past year or so. High cost of development combined with a user base that buys few games results in a risky and unprofitable scenario for developers, and the result is that fewer games come out for the system, and far, far fewer games have been announced for the PSP. That doesn't mean none are coming out, but it's getting pretty bare. That's not to say that there are not already a good number of games that you could get and enjoy though. I bought a PSP because of the games that are already out, and so if new games releases dry up, that's okay. I still have quite a few games for the system to get yet.

"Um...not sure. If the site says we're getting them, I'm sure we are. We don't really sell that many PSPs though so I wouldn't worry about being able to pick up one."
I've always considered the entire Nintendo franchise to be aimed at a younger audience than the Sony line from a storyline/game complexity standpoint. Perhaps that's no longer true?
The DS has pretty much shattered that stereotype. Yes, there are games geared toward families and younger gamers, but as someone said before it truly is the equivalent of the PS2 in terms of library variety and quality.
I was about to say this exact thing
They both have really good games, I would personally(actually I did!) buy both to be able to play all of them, but if I could have only one, it would be the DS
Simply because it has MORE good games
That's pretty much it at this point, except for the occasional Vile run through Maverick Hunter X.
Disgaea is a flawless recreation of a PS2 game(unlike FFT's port of a PS1 game, but that's another story), DJ MAX puts almost every other music game on the planet to shame for sheer replayability(dozens of unlockables, ridiculous missions, etc.), Lumines is digital crack, and Crisis Core is beautiful.
You can't compare it to the DS in my opinion, because the two are capable of completely different things. If I'm out for a quirky, niche game, I'll go for the DS. If I want a perfect recreation of a console game with the appropriate level of polish, PSP.
Even the PSP has its fair share of niche titles, what with Atlus bringing over stuff like Yggdra Union and Riviera, and Konami's Dracula X Chronicles. As if Symphony of the Night Portable isn't awesome enough, it also includes Rondo of Blood.
I bought mine for FFT, and it's been all uphill from there.
And yes, the PSP is a much more fragile system, which is why if you're going that route, get a very, very good case.
The PSP is not a system you want to carry around lightly protected.
I never asked for this!
In other words, yes, I enjoy my PSP very much. Although I enjoy my DS as well. >.>
Ability to take my PSX favourites out with me is gold. If I don't feel like playing, I just listen to something, watch a movie or just browse YouTube.

Square Enix's handheld support has been pretty divided between the two systems. Coming up over the next year or so, there's:
DS
Chrono Trigger
Dragon Quest V
Dragon Quest IX
Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Echoes of Time
Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days
Valkyrie Profile: The Accused Ones
PSP
Final Fantasy XIII: Agito
Final Fantasy Dissidia
Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep
Parasite Eve: The 3rd Birthday
Star Ocean: First Departure
Star Ocean: Second Evolution
Personally, I'd wait until after TGS. Last week there were a bunch of new PSP and DS games announced and this week there'll definitely be a bunch more (and more details on the ones announced last week). Or maybe you could just get both...
I'd like to get into some of the new DS remakes (FF IV and DQ IV) but I have a hard time justifying playing through games I've beaten years ago when there are tons of new games I haven't played. However, whatever system you go with, I recommend Disgaea, especially if you haven't played it on PS2.
It gets a lot of use for WipEout Pulse I guess.
I've been playing it for a long time and the selection is pleeennnnnttyyy if you're just buying a PSP now. Plus it runs awesome emulators so I can play SNES, NES, and more.
There's even some awesome software that you can install to add multitasking, instant messaging, skype, computer display recording and more!
Golly what a swell device it is!
...no.
You know what, first thing I'm going to do when I get home is smash my PSP with a brick. OP you have shown me the light!
I find I do this a lot too. My PSP rarely leaves the house, other than when I'm going to be on a plane or such for a decent length of time and know its not going to get bumped around or dropped. Mostly play it around the house.
My DS goes everywhere.
