Adventure!

So, adventure games.

PC or Console, they are some of the most treasured games of all time for some of us.

And recently there has been a revival of sorts with:

zack_narrowweb__300x354,0.jpg
Apparently its all your fault that this didn't succeed in the market, you should be ashamed and purchase two copies.

Adventure game? Lawyer game? Does it matter?

sam_and_max.jpg
Annnnd yes, Sam and Max.

*edit: and my images dont work. Awesome.
*edit2: Hmmm did that work?

Whats on the horizon for the genre? I rarely follow with whats coming down the gaming pipeline aside from what I read on this forum at times.
Is there anything for adventure games coming down the pipe that are worth pining over?

Or just feel free to talk about your favorite games in the Genre.

And yes, this is a blatant attempt to bring my Santee out of the woodwork.

I'm sad that I'll probably never get a chance to play this. It does look pretty amazing.

Sam & Max is out now for the Wii, it's $30 and so far it's really good. I didn't play it when it hit the PC, but now that I'm coming back to it I'm actually surprised how well it recaptures the spirit of Sam & Max Hit the Road, which was one of my favorite games of my childhood.

As far as stuff that's coming up:

    Again: Eye of Providence (DS)

From CING, makers of Hotel Dusk and Trace Memory. This looks so freaking cool. Apparently, it's an adventure game where the hook is that the main character has the ability to look back in time; when you play, you hold the DS book-style (like Hotel Dusk), and one screen is your location in the present, while the other is the same location just 17 years in the past.

Vampyre definately just pinged on to my radar if that pedigree behind it is true.

As for future adventure stuff, Telltale (the new Sam & Max and the Strong Bad people) are producing an episodic Wallace and Gromit adventure series.

    Cracking news eh?

I cannot for the life of me get Scratches to run in fullscreen mode, and even when windowed it's stuck in the corner of my screen instead of being centered... but from what little I've played so far it looks like it could be pretty good.

I have to complain about the "next-gen" browndark look to it though, as it makes it difficult to see items at times...

The Penumbra games are like an Adventure game played from a first person perspective.

They are creepy as hell, and have a great physics/interaction system.

I need to finish the one I am on, so I can review it.

Pretty damn good actually. The first one has some bad sound quality though, and the second one's ending is a little weak. But other than that, fun times. I laughed out loud. Indeed.

Season 2 was much, much better than Season 1.

Vampyre Story looks pretty good. I thought it was going to be all hand drawn, like Curse of Monkey Island, but it looks like part rendered/part handrawn.

It was, but I guess it was too expensive to animate characters smoothly. All characters are now made of polygons, but backgrounds are still handmade.

Grim Fandango's been in my backlog forever. I'm hoping Halloween will get me in the mood to play it a ton. It seems to work pretty well on vista if installed and run in 98 compatibility mode.

Sam and Max Season 2 was much stronger than the first one. Actually, Season 1 Episode 4 is when I started to really think they knew what the hell they were doing. Before that everything seemed a little weak.

So far the Strong Bad games are pretty fun but it doesn't seem like they have all that many places to go with the game. And having only a handful of locations can make it seem stale. But whatever, I will keep with it because of Telltale's strong (eventual) showing in S&M.

In the same way that my Mrs will spend a day home ill breaking out the Disney films, I like to find a freeware old-school point and clicker and marathon my way through it. Nostalgia for the Lucas Arts adventure days I guess. I did love those games so, and played them all.

I didn't get on with any of that Sierra bullshit though. Death? Numerous possibilities to unknowingly screw youself over with an incorrect or missed action? No thank you sir.

Other notable mentions being Toonstruck with Christopher Lloyd and Broken Sword 1 and 2. 3 not so good and 4 had issues with my graphics card.

I've not really looked into anything more modern apart from the telltale stuff. I should start taking notes from the thread.

Syberia I found to be underwhelming. I heard a lot of great things about it along with TLJ. TLJ isn't without problems and the story leaves something to be desired but I think it is a competent "modern" (or was at the time) adventure game. Syberia I found to be boring and buggy.

I loved Syberia until I got about halfway through and for some reason just never picked it up again... maybe I should at least play it through. TLJ I just got overwhelmed with some RL issues and didn't end up getting past the 3rd hour probably.

It is a relatively new kids show on Cartoon Network, so depending on where you are from I don't know if you will ever see it. The show is one of those adult/kid hybrids that gives a few good laughs to all ages I think.
