Nobody's made a thread about this yet?

My Synopsis
Disaster: Day of Crisis is now out in the EU. NOA currently has no plans to release it in the US, but with how easy Wii Homebrew is now really it's easy to import and use the region free homebrew launcher. It's made by Monolithsoft, the guys behind Baten Kaitos and Xenosaga.

This game is basically like a core gamer Wii step-by-step, fitting many elements of classic games to wii style controls. There's Time Crisis style shooting with motion-sensed reloading, driving sections, QTE cutscenes, exploration and Trauma Center style 'first aid' minigames, all enclosed within a plot that is basically almost every hollywood disaster movie ever mixed together for the sake of awesome.

As well as dealing with volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, floods, getting set on fire (pat yourself down by wildly flailing the remote and nunchuk!), you're also trying to solve a kidnapping while being chased by a group of terrorists. Oh, and a nuke.

Official Nintendo of Europe Synopsis:
Taking on the bad guys is one thing, but facing off against the full force of nature is a whole new kind of challenge. In Disaster: Day of Crisis for Wii you’ll have to tackle both as you guide former U.S. Marine Raymond Bryce through an action-packed mission where everything that can go wrong, does.

Disaster: Day of Crisis will have you driving, swimming, running and shooting your way through 23 tense stages as the environment around you is laid to ruin by volcanoes, earthquakes, floods, hurricanes and tsunamis. And if nature wasn’t a force enough to be reckoned with, there’s a shadowy terrorist cell, named SURGE, that must be stopped at all costs.

With a military background and experience in the International Rescue Team, Ray is as well equipped as any man can be for the drama that awaits him. It’ll be up to you to guide him through the worst day of his life. You’ll use the unique capabilities of the Wii Remote and Nunchuk to evade the forces of nature, disarm bombs and much more.

As you go, you’ll have to keep an eye on Ray’s health status – finding clear air to breathe if his lungs fill up with smoke or food to replenish his falling stamina. You’ll also need to perform daring rescue operations to save citizens who might be trapped under rubble or in danger of drowning and even administer life-saving first aid.

With intense cinematics, a raft of unlockable content and relentless action, Disaster: Day of Crisis guarantees thrills and spills that would leave the bravest of action heroes quaking in their boots.

* Guide former marine Ray as he tackles the terrorist cell SURGE and battles against the forces of nature.
* Use the Wii Remote and Nunchuk in a diverse range of ways to overcome your environment, rescue citizens and take out your enemies.
* Enjoy the movie-like storyline that unfolds.

Trailer of Awesome:
Awesome

My Impressions

This game is super fun. It's cinematic, it looks pretty good for a Wii title, the voice acting is a bit hit or miss in places but more hit than miss. The main character is really likable in a Frank West way. This game has a lot of cutscenes, but they're usually 30 seconds long and followed by another gameplay segment. There's 23 stages, each with different sections. An average stage has a lot of exploration and shooting, usually with some rescue/first aid/driving mixed in.

This game is really good. If you're looking for a hardcore game from Nintendo, this could be it. Homebrew on the Wii now makes it possible for you US gamers to import this in case it never does land there (god, it'd be a shame if it didn't.) EU gamers, seriously, think about getting this.

Oh, and you probably noticed this in the trailer - but this game has FUCKING AWESOME music. Some of the best out of Nintendo in years.

Hahah, yeah, actually, it has a lot in common with 24 as a show in the way it's structured. There's 'all happening in one day/consecutively' style stuff going on in what i've played so far, but the gameplay is far, far, far ahead of what was in 24 the game.

The shooting is basically Time Crisis - pulling Z to take cover, popping in and out shooting people. I just really like this game. It's epic.

He has a bit of a Jack Bauer style language, too. I was just in part of a stage trying to start a car. Everything was on fire around me and he's in a panic as I 'turn' the remote to turn the key and it's stalling as the fire creeps closer.

Ray just keeps on spouting "Damn it! Shit! Damn it! Useless piece of shit!" over and over.

And people keep saying "it's going to be a very long day.." and there's even a little oval office drama going on in cutscenes.

Yeah, do. It's really, really good. And they've said they want to make a second one but Nintendo'll only let them if it sells. This needs to sell for that purpose alone, this could be a great new IP for the Wii, and one that appeals to more hardcore, too.

On about Chapter 10 now. Really enjoying it, it's a clever mix of the natural disasters and terrorists combining to make things interesting and difficult. No two chapters are the same, and the story is thus far non-stop.

Everybody should watch the trailer in the OP. It gives a great idea of the kind of vibe this game has.

Basic layout of a mission for you guys, to give an idea of how things move in this game. Minor spoilers:
So one mission... First I'm desperate to find a car. I have to find one. I manage to find one that isn't wrecked and destroyed, but it's locked. As I'm asking around for the keys, a guy's heart stops. I'm in a camp of survivors from the earthquake, and it's no surprise many are deadly ill. I perform CPR on him, and his wife hands me the keys to his car.

So then I get in the car and I'm rushing to the enemy base. They've kidnapped someone important, and I'm going against what the government wants to exchange the nuclear trigger I recovered for the hostage. (Pretty much straight out of 24, again..)

So I'm just driving through empty, dusty roads. As I do my character is talking to himself and cursing about the events of the day so far. It's like an interactive cutscene, as I'm driving as he talks. I arrive at the base.

There's a big cutscene. This base is at a geothermal power plant at the root of an active volcano. Halfway through the confrontation/negotiation with the villains, the volcano begins to spit out rocks in a minor eruption, aggrevated by the earthquake from earlier in the day. Everything devolves and a huge firefight breaks out.

In the firefight mode the game becomes like Time Crisis as I said. Z makes your character take cover, a shake of the nunchuk reloads, C makes you zoom in on whatever part of the screen you're pointing at, and B fires. The movement is automatic, like Time Crisis. Shooting in this can be either trigger happy or methodic. I play the latter way, taking cover more than firing out in the open, pulling off headshots and shooting barrels to blow dudes up.

One of the enemy is knocked down by shards of rock from the volcano. After the battle is over, I have the choice of helping him out if I want. I do. I have to pick him up and drag him inside a building to safety. I then enter the base. Cue more firefights and between those there's some exploration and some QTEs where I have to move the remote in a certain fashion to avoid enemy fire.

There's then another huge confrontation and boss fight, interrupted by lava beginning to flow into the building as the volcano heads into a full-scale eruption. A thick stripe of lava seperates me and the terrorists. We shoot each other some more, they escape to their helipad with the hostage, and I then have to rush against the clock to get out of the building before the lava seals me in. Reaching the car triggers mission complete.

The next mission begins with me desperately trying to outrun the lava driving down the mountain.

Great fun. Get homebrew channel and import guys.

when did this go from "'exciting'new Nintendo franchise for core gamers" to "we'll give it to these blokes only to pretend like we don't hate them"? I mean, there was barely any info during development, but I don't remember ever hearing that it was EU only.

Not right now, but I will at some point (when I am at home) scour my list of "retailers that ship internationally", and find the best price for you USA folks to import it for.

Played it at the Eurogamer Expo yesterday, the Nintendo PR guy was trying to sell it as a "really serious game", and I was just like "It look like really silly, stupid fun", he was not happy...

It doesn't mean they're not kicking ass. NOE have been great with stuff like Club Nintendo, continuing to print stuff like 42 (clubhouse games), Hotel Dusk and Tetris DS whereas they all went out of print in the US, and actually getting Disaster out. NOE have been awesome this generation.

Also there wasn't really much translation or localization needed - an American writer worked with the Japanese devs to write the game, and even the Japanese version only has English VA. It's pretty much just text. And NOA can't be responsible for that, as NOE has its own dedicated department that translates to French/German/Spanish/whatever else - which are all included on the Disaster disc.

From what my sources say (and these are pretty reliable), NoA believes that game would be slaughtered sales-wise if put out in November. They also pretty much except many X360 / PS3 games to be sales disasters (no pun intended) because there is only so much money going around. And even that number is lower thanks to relatively small userbase and recession.
Totally. Tingle's Rose Coloured Rupee Land.

Let's just say that US group focus tests weren't that supporting.

The chances of Disaster coming here are iffy? Really? Woah, crazy. You'd think something that feels so western would be a shoe-in for release here, and it's not as if it would be competing with anything similar released by Nintendo. I mean, Tingle I can understand with the massive gay factor, but this?

Then again they might just be waiting till after election-year silliness blows over. Companies occasionally err on the side of caution with their media for fear that candidates will pounce on it as evidence of Hollywood cultural elite corrupting America or such garbage. That's why Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker got yanked and re-edited in 2000 by Warner Bros.

Edit: Or what elkatas said. Maybe the conspiracy theory part of my brain got carried away.
