it's not necessarily "arbirtary bullshit", there are plenty of elements that may or may not turn out to have an impact in how the story has played out. The way the story has been so far, it's like reading the first quarter, and the third quarter of a book and saying that the conventions the writer used are contrived bullshit

that may be true but there's still room for them to bring it together in a cohesive story that makes sense, whether or not it's a story you enjoy or care for

sorry, zerofill, but this is stupid

the story is the way it is because that's how they chose to release it. it's not like reading only parts of a book, it's like reading a whole book which for some reason has plot issues that make it seem like it's incomplete. if the plot has issues, it's not the player's fault, it's valve's. saying "you can't say it's bad-- it might become good later! who knows!" doesn't cut it at all.

No, he's right. There's 20 years (I guess) missing from when Gordon was in stasis between the first two games.
There may be some logical explanation as to why these people are in these positions, but we haven't gotten it because it occurs in the blank space between games. That in-between time is one of the things I'd like to see cleared up, right after they explain the G-Man

no, still dumb. that space is there because they put it there. if it makes the plot suck, that's their fault.

I don't even have much of an opinion one way or the other about hl2, actually. I just thought that was a really crappy analogy.

If they didn't want you to read the first and third quarters of the story then they shouldn't have released the first and third quarters of the story. The onus is on them to make the player care about the story. If they fail to do that through haphazard storytelling (bear in mind there is a difference between story and storytelling) then that's not really the players fault.

you can weigh in and call it all crap, I personally choose to withhold judgement until they finish this installment, someday because I like the game enough to give it a chance

meanwhile there is a ton of people (myself included) who love the world Valve's crafted and the story they are telling.

I think I'll like it, I just wish they would fucking finish what they've started

    yeah, I liked it

it makes me curious because they're always hinting at things and never fully showing them

but I get the feeling they have it all planned out

Their biggest mistake in the story was when they decided to make every single character have pre-existing relationships with one another

In one sense, that actually makes some kind of sense. These are all members of the resistance, and many of them come from Black Mesa in order to further connect them to the first game.

I think having them all come from black mesa was stupid

the main boss is the director, and the three other secondary characters from the first game just happen to lead the one and only resistance movement

    pretty big fucking coincidence

hey while you're suspending your disbelief, ignore the interdimensional portal, aliens, and psuedo-science

everytime someone makes this point, and it's just as stupid every single time

and every time the point stands regardless of how you feel about it

if you didn't like the game and don't want people to call your reasoning on the glaring holes it provides, then come up with a more solid reason

if you just didn't like it and thats the end of it, then don't feel compelled to justify it
dude, just because the setting is absurd doesn't mean the characters can't be realistic

I must admit that despite myself I like their "show very little and tell almost nothing" method of storytelling

It works in the game because you are given the basic plot (aliens invade and you have to save the world) and in addition you are given little opportunities to explore and look around and find little things that piece together to form a more cohesive narrative

Of course it's not much, and even when you make the attempt to piece it all together it's not the best story around, but it is enjoyable and it keeps you guessing and it facilitates the gameplay

I think that perhaps Valve are a little better at world building and writing scenes than they are at plotting out a story (at least from what we've seen so far). There's a video floating around the internet of a guy doing a playthrough of Half-Life 2 and noting the little special details in each area of the game and examining the way the game is constructed, not from a technical standpoint really, but from an artistic one. Watching that helped me grasp how much effort and detail went into creating the world, and I came away with a better appreciation for the game

I don't see why it's odd that the lambda team was working to escape Black Mesa way before any of this resistance thing got started and they knew something was up and kept working together to try to stop whatever was up and now they're leading people who did not know something was up.

    I really like minimalistic storytelling

shadow of the colossus was nearly perfect in this regard

I'm pretty sure they made it a point to stress that no one (save maybe breen) knew this shit was going to go down beforehand, which is what proper fucked everyone in the first place
