How to be more manly...

Okay, maybe not exactly, but this bothers the shit out of me. I'm 18, rather short 165 cm or so. Wherever I go, people comment and say I look young/little/cute/whatever. I hate having any facial hair so I usually shave every day. I think I dress appropriately for my age, and I have rather long hair.

Whenever I tell people I'm studying for exams, they say "Oh yeah, what year? 11?" (I'm at university!)

So, guys, any tips? How do I look older?

Honestly. I think you can only go two ways: Grow facial hair or develop a muscular physique.

Well, there's also unhealthy tricks: "Smoking, sleeping less, etc".

Small dog, platform shoes and spikey hair.

Without looking at a photo, it's kinda hard to say what makes you in particular look young. Some people just have a babyface, others looked like their mum dressed them etc etc.

Hm, depends. If he's got a certain type of facial hair growth it might actually make him look younger.

Cutting the hair, and working out are probably the best two ways to go.

Lift weights. Take up a sport or martial art. Do things that will build your physique, produce more testosterone, and build your confidence. Or be a lumberjack. I hear lumberjacks are manly.

I'm short and look very young (I'm 21 and I've had people think I was 14 or ask if I'm old enough to work). To offset this I dress very conservatively (think Brooks Brothers) and it seems to help. What do you usually wear on a daily basis?

Will do. Monday morning. Don't want it too short though, I still like a little bit of length.

Like that. Obviously not me, as this guy is brimming with manliness.
    Gigaton wrote: »

Usually Jeans, brown leather shoes, long sleeve shirt with a sweater (I think that's what you Americans call them?). Sometimes a business shirt with a sweater over it.

Yeah, that's about as boyish a haircut as you can get, and without actually seeing your clothing, it sounds really dweebish.

At the least I'd suggest changing your clothes is probably the first place to look at.

    I mean clothes like this:

Young looking clothes I suppose. There's a fine line between dressing too young and dressing too old. Should I not be wearing this kind of stuff?

Do you have examples of haircuts that aren't "boyish" ? I don't want to look like a fucking marine though.

If you were 28, it would be a bit different. Your body is still changing quite a bit.
Who do you feel has a manly look?

Also, lets do a bit of math here. You are 18, in college/university, presumably a Freshman? Going by the American school system, if people think you are in 11th grade, they think you are two years younger than you really are.
    That's not a whole lot...

Tube of course. That guy is like the essence of man.

I suppose it isn't really a big issue, it's just kind of frustrating. I think most of it has to do with my height.

You know, I work with a drummer who is basically the same person as I am.

Except a little more chill and low-key.

People assume he's about 4 years younger than he is and that I'm about 4 years older than I am.

He dresses really maturely, he acts really mature, and he's still basically the little kid looking-dude. It's just how he looks no matter what.

The plus side is he gets some serious tail.

Pretty much. The main point was that there's a certain point where you're just going to look young if you look young. And that it's not all bad.

Live with it. As long as you like what you sound/look like don't worry about it. I'm 24, and Im 6'4, which is something in cm, whatever, anyways, I can't grow facial hair for shit, and I'm athletically thin. Last year someone thought I was a freshman in college when I was 22. I am losing my hair though so I have the worst way ever to start looking old. hooray!

Obvious solutions are, short simple haircut (non of these poofy styled ones) and wear normal shirts and jeans. No fluro/retro styled clothes.
Dude, you shouldn't give a shit about this. THere are worse things that people deal with than not looking manly enough.

    Sounds like you're still young.

My tips if you're serious about this:
(Mind you, if you're just too baby faced, some of these would have the opposite effect than you want)

    Shave your head. Bald.
If you're facial hair is not wispy peach fuzz grow one of these:
    jay-796057.JPG
Drop the plain old tee shirts. Get stuff with collars.
    Drop the sweaters/hoodies, get turtlenecks.
Jeans are ok. Slacks are better. Just have them fit. Kids wear big baggy stuff.
As a general tip about clothing, dont get a size too big just because it's comfier. Just make it fit correctly.
Buy a golf style cabby hat. (good chance of opposite effect)

Personally I would just get used to it/have fun with it. *shrugs* Then again I've been dealing with this forever. I'm 25 and people finally guess that I'm around 18 or 19(and often that's just because they know I'm in college).

It'll be alright when you're older.

I had long hair and looked unmanly due to somewhat of the same predicament, thin and no facial hair. I cut my hair and while i look more manly I now look 3-4 years younger than I am. I didn't care before and I don't care now so it made little difference to me, but cutting your hair might just result in a different perceived problem and not get you anywhere.

clearly, you should pick inappropriate fights and slap some women. It might help if you refuse to eat vegetables and take up alcohol abuse!

Anyway, stop caring (I know, not so easy, but still you'll be happier). People think you're young because you are young. It'll pass, especially once enough crappy life stuff happens to you that it starts to show in your demeanour. Don't actually look forward to that.

If you want to get fit or cut your hair or whatever, go for it, but do it for the right reasons.

You're just going to have to deal with the age...i get told all the time that i am a "pretty boy" and a lot of the time people think i am way younger than i am. I even had a guy come to the door of my house and tell me to give the election papers he was giving me to my parents because i didnt look old enough to vote.....boy did he look embarrassed when i told him i was in fact 23, and had been able to vote for 5 years now.

Look at it this way though, looking young is WAY better than looking older, at least when i am older i will still look younger than i am and i will be the better for it i think.

I have a similar issue but I'm a girl, yes its annoying but there's very little you can do about it. People will understand how old you are from your voice and mannerisms, you don't sound like a little kid so people should catch on that you aren't one. Just take it in your stride, if you want to grow a bit of facial hair or have it cut then do so, but only if you like the look not becuase it makes you look older.

    I have the same problem.

I have people come to the door asking for the home owner. When I tell them I own the house, they ask for my dad. I usually close the door on them.

It is frustrating, but don't let it bother you.

You could always do what my friend suggests, find a hot old lady who has an asshole son, and make her your sugar mama. She'll like you because your cute, and she'll sleep with you because she hates her son.

Just laugh it off and enjoy it while it lasts. I'm 21 and people typically think I'm 16 to 18. It really helps with the older ladies, which makes it unfortunate that you're not single. The good thing to know is that you'll probably still look 21 whenever you're 27.
