I think they're there just to give clues about what you'll find in the surrounding area, mostly just the backstory.

Putting them on the stand doesn't do anything, but collecting them levels up your S.P.E.C.I.A.L. and skills. There is one for each stat and skill.

    Ok, so, frustration.
I'm at Dupont Circle trying to get some ridiculous part for some ridiculous quest, doesn't matter. Anyways,

I'm like 85% of the way across the large section of the map (after you exit the car tunnel) and fucking raiders are sniping me from ACROSS THE GODDAMN MAP!

    What the fuck?

I have small guns at 100, with the "commando" perk and I STILL cannot hit them with a greater than like 35% chance to hit in VATS and I sure as shit can't hit them from this distance in run-n-gun mode.

Am I doing something stupid wrong here? What gives?

Uhh so I finished (kind of)
What happened? I went into the chamber and found myself running around in circles for like 5 minutes, unsure about what the fuck I was supposed to do. I know I was supposed to get the purifier going, but nothing was intractable! The only thing that was I couldn't mess with. It would just say "this is used for mixing chemicals" and thats it.... so then I end up with the good start yet bad finish story line. I must have missed something, what was it?

For the people who have played a fair bit, now...

Overall, would you say any of the weapon skills stand out? I'm starting a new game (again), and I'm tempted to focus on energy weapons, but the Laser Pistol is the only thing around for a while; not many of them to upgrade, and it seems to be constantly out of ammo.

I don't understand how people are having trouble getting to the GNR building. Are you following the map? The map tells you exactly how to get there. You go by subway, and each subway is marked. Go to one subway, exit it, and the next subway is marked. Do this, and at the end take a left out of the subway exit, towards the fallout shelters. There should be Super Mutants hanging around in the buildings. Hell I'm pretty sure they were on my radar.

Some people go to rivet city for Moira before going to GNR, and a without spoiling, while there it is possible to skip the GNR quest.

So when they want to go to GNR later there are no mapmarkers.

Man, I was doing the minefield part of Moira's questline and
Snuck around on a rock outcropping near the building that the sniper, Arkansas, was walking around. Ending up taking him out in a sniper's duel. The drawback? VATS critical hit slings him off the building and I can't find him to get the key on his body for some of the houses I can't yet lockpick. And I'll be damned if I'm going to scour the damn mine-filled town for his body. I did get his sniper rifle though.

Oh, I know. I got the proper quest update. I just then wanted to go through the sewers to GNR and such. I didn't have the "Follow his Footsteps" quest anymore, but the markers still popped up when I selected GNR as my destination. I was very confused as to why they didn't point straight to GNR to begin with.

No power armor training then, unless there's a way to get it that I'm unaware of. Not too big of a loss, though, as once you have Power Armor you kind of win.

    You have to admit tho
Walking around with you and your companion in power armor is pretty fun for role playing. Something I generally avoid doing, but I couldnt help walking "patrols" through harsh area's looking for civilians to save. I wore outcast power armor because it looked more Special Covert Opsy than the standard. :D

The mines in Minefield aren't really that hard to deal with. Just take things slowly, keep an eye out, and equip a pistol you have lots of ammo for to plink at mines in bad places if you can't recover/avoid them. Oh, and save often.

    It helps that
Aside from Arkansas, there's nobody else in Minefield to distract you
