At the end of August, 2008, a package arrived at our door from TigerDirect.com, addressed to the previous owner of the house.
I was out of town when it came, and then I didn't get around to looking up their new address for a while, and then I didn't get around to delivering it to them, and long story short here we are in November and this package is still here. The previous owner never stopped by or called or sent a letter asking about it.
So, I seek the moral wisdom of the herd. Do I open it?
I have a camera that uses that kind of card. So this would not be a waste on me. But it is worth over $30, so if the guy didn't get it re-sent to him he's out 30 bucks.

So, should I keep it?
No, you should fill it up with porn and then mail it to him.

You robbed your great great grandchildren of a chance to open a box containing a disappointingly obsolete device.

I voted to send, but you should really just drop the guy a letter first. if he did get it replaced, chances are he'll just say "nah, it's cool, you keep it." it can't hurt.
I think it's important that a portion of the porn you put on that 8gig card should be porn of yourself and any of your friends or significant-others. It doesn't matter if they know you took the footage of them without their permission.

you have to be careful of something here, ramius
opening someone elses mail is a ..federal offense? something like that
by doing this, he knows you opened his mail
is he the kind of guy who wouldn't care? do you know him at all?

you already opened it, by sending you admit that you rummaged through his stuff and isn't that like a crime or something? i dunno. i say keep it if you got a camera that can use it.

the mail is addressed to his address
the mail is rightfully his under the law of "I live here, so it must be mine"

As I've told my wife, I'm pretty certain the federal offense only applies to the USPS, not to UPS.
As for what kind of guy he is? When we bought the house, there was an electric heater in the garage, in the far corner away from the house. It was in the contract that he gets to take the heater with him. Fine with me, I don't do shop work so I don't need a heated garage anyways. But the guy didn't just take the heater, he took the wiring as well! He unhooked the wire from the heater and from the electric box and pulled it all out through the ceiling and walls and shit just so he would have wire to hook it up at his new house.

in which case you'll never know, so you'll feel just as great morally as if he had turned out to really need it. also, that's not very likely in the first place. basically, you can't lose by first writing a letter and then sending it if he says he never got a replacement.
if he never got one and you send him this one, you're doing a good deed and you'll get to feel justifiably great for a while. if he did get one, you'll get to keep this one and feel justifiably great for checking to see if he needed it. if he got one but tricks you into sending it anyway-- first this is unlikely, no matter what you assert. not many people are as dumb and assholish in real life as most of us are on the internet. but even if he did, you'd never know, so it's functionally identical to the situation as it would be if he really needed it.
if you don't send it, you'll never know whether he needed it or not. that would bother me, and the gain of having a 8gb sd card or whatever is much less in my eyes than the gain of having tried one's best to be morally correct in a situation where that's actually really really easy to do.

Sounds like a guy who would spend hundreds of dollars to take you to court in order to get back thirty-five.

keep it, or fill it with bestiality porn and send it to him (well not send it, then you'd get in trouble too), then alert the authorities

but if the feller is nearby perhaps you should take the high road
this sounds reasonable

it is the smart thing to do

yeah i think this is the best route
i thought it was going to be something cool.
like a 16GB card.
you're weird. i feel i can say this because, as a weird person, it takes one to know one.
this is true!
the card is filled with horrifying pictures of Spiders
that would be the worst inheritance ever
If it's free I'll take three, is what I always say.
you can't turn this around on me
I proclaimed you weird first and, as such, your point of view will always be faulty
Should I be worried about this statement?

PARKER, YOU'RE FIRED! <-- My comic book podcast! Satan look here!
weird also means prophetic, so no
the mail is addressed to his address
the mail is rightfully his under the law of "I live here, so it must be mine"
but weird people are inherently unable to use a dictionary, so yes
it's so they don't get lost or stolen
