I live in a far away 'developing' country, but I have a visitor who can bring me something worth playing - not that i'm a big gamer or have much time for games anyway. Once upon a time...
I need a game that is not like warcraft in any way and is not designed to be played online and preferably can be completed in let's say, a week?
My question therefore is: What's the best single-player game out there?
i'm feeling a little overwhelmed and need your help.
It'd be great if we had more information, like what game console you own/will rent/steal to play this game. Or if it's a PC game your system's capabilities
Well, since you didn't specify the console, I personally would suggest:
Wii - Super Mario Galaxy
DS - The World Ends With You
PS2 - God of War I & II
360 - I'd suggest various XBLA titles but you wouldn't need someone bringing those over.
PC - If you have an awesome computer, Fallout 3. If you have a shitty computer... Fallout 1&2.
Civilization IV is pretty cheap these days and I find it to be fun even if you're just playing with computers. It's one of those games with infinite replay value if you happen to like it.
fallout 3 looks like my kind of deal. there are some youtube videos showing it plays 'decently' on the mbp if you turn off aa and run with medium detail... i can live with that.
i think it's done with a firm handshake all round. thanks for all the suggestions, it's interesting that most were for older games. one's i've seen come and go. all good though, thanks.
There are a lot of high-quality free indie games you can download such as Cave Story (Metroidvania-style 2D platformer), NetHack (the quintessential Rogue-like), and Dwarf Fortress (crazy complicated sim). Hell, those three alone are every bit as good (if not better) than most commercial games. If the reason you don't want games with online play is that you have something limiting your internet connection, have your friend throw these three (and more! N, I Wanna Be The Guy, Iji, the Trillby games, the list goes on) on a flash drive or a CD and bring them to you.
I do have warm memories of playing nethack a long time ago on a monochrome laptop. but i'm not looking for anything with unlimited replayability or addictive gameplay. i need some serious brain fluff. preferably killing stuff - but if there was ever a revitalisation of the good old sierra style adventure games, i'd go in for that - but i know it's a dead genre, like punk.

You might want to check out the new Sam and Max games by Telltale (and Strongbad's Awesome Game For Cool People for that matter, also by Telltale). There's no text parser like in Sierra-style games, but they are indeed a series of very good old-school point-and-click adventures.
OP said no online play. Could get games though digital delivery or other ways than courier if it was an option. He's clearly on dialup or some kind of restricted internet in a country that is not the US or Canada.

Once you download the games though, Gametap isn't online play, it just requires online. Unless he's looking for complete no online it still fits.
All I have to work with is a 2.4ghz macbook pro with 4gb of ram (8600m gt graphics) running bootcamp xp for gaming.
so no consoles i'm afraid and not exactly a stellar gaming machines...
I have this computer. The Orange Box is an excellent, excellent choice. It runs well on the hardware. Team Fortress 2 will be a loss for you because of no online, but the package is otherwise great. Portal is fantastic. Ditto for Half Life 2 and the episodes.
Orange Box. HL2, Episode 1, Episode 2, Portal, and Peggle all in one box for a reasonable price is probably among the finest gaming to dollars ratio known to man. If they're able to get in some TF2 time too, all the better, but it'd just be icing.
Forar on
First they came for the Muslims, and we said NOT TODAY, MOTHERFUCKER!

I think some WRPGs like the Fallout games, Planescape: Torment, KOTOR 1/2, Mass Effect, etc. are what you want.
Rock Band DLC | GW:OttW - arrcd | WLD - Thortar

It's even for the Mac, although it is slightly buggy.

p.
It doesn't matter how 1337 or EPIC you are with a GAME as long as you SUCK in REAL LIFE.
REAL LIFE is the ULTIMATE GAME.
THE GAME that RULE THEM ALL!!!

$5/mo if you get a years subscription.
like billions of SP games.
All awesome.
If you're in, you know, North America.
Europe coming soon? Dunno if it'll be the same or even applicable.
Plus you can't log in without internet.
