100 pages? -or- How I make money doing nothing

I have a question:

Why do threads always get locked at 100ish pages? Is it to keep the database running optimally, or is it just tradition?

At one time the limit was 50 pages due to some database issues, but I think now we stop at 100 out of a sense of tradition

It's been a long time since major technical troubles, as I recall

100 pages will not break anything. G&T and MMOE run rampant with 130 page threads

It used to be that it would break things

The way the forums are structured now, it wouldn't do shit

But there's a sense of tradition

And also a sense of not having huge annoying threads that are impossible to get into

I have a strange urge to do something vile and get this thread locked with the quickness; I'd get jailed and probably a tempban as well, but I think it might be worth it.

I'm an executive, my technical knowledge is limited. But I just can't understand why it would hurt the database to just let a thread run on until it's done, or forever. Isn't it just a collection of posts tied to a common thread? It's not like it's one big "text" field in a table growing larger and larger or anything.

EDIT: Turns out, it wouldn't hurt anything. I understand now. Thanks everyone!

This forum doesn't track posts per thread. There is a separate table for posts, and the posts contain a column for listing what thread it is in. When the thread loads, it grabs every post that is marked for that thread and orders them.

So there aren't really any technical limitations. It's more about just how ridiculous and unmanageable threads become when they are 740 pages long.

EDIT: I meant table, not database.

If it only does that when that specific thread is loaded, then we should have 1 thread that is allowed to just get stupidly huge since it won't affect the rest of the forum.

A thread that never gets locked, goes on forever. It will become "that thread we dare not speak of" that everyone is afraid to go into. Over time, it's growth will slow from this fear, so it will only add perhaps 1-2 pages per month. But it will grow, nonetheless. People will brave it, even if only occasionally. Soon it will be thousands, tens of thousands, millions of pages long. People will tremble at the thought of entering the abyss.

Once per year, some poor pathetic newbie will start from page one and try to read the whole thing. The authorities will find him dead a month later, emaciated from lack of nutrients. The police will all look at each other, shake their heads, and say "It got another one."

    It will be beautiful.

    (I'm rambling, ignore me...)

Yes. I'm technically considered a manager, but I don't really manage anything. I just review reports and oversee meetings with a group of managers below me, and then browse the web and trade stocks. So, I decided to call myself an "executive" instead. Seemed more appropriate.
