I have a strange urge to do something vile and get this thread locked with the quickness; I'd get jailed and probably a tempban as well, but I think it might be worth it.
I'm an executive, my technical knowledge is limited. But I just can't understand why it would hurt the database to just let a thread run on until it's done, or forever. Isn't it just a collection of posts tied to a common thread? It's not like it's one big "text" field in a table growing larger and larger or anything.
EDIT: Turns out, it wouldn't hurt anything. I understand now. Thanks everyone!
This forum doesn't track posts per thread. There is a separate table for posts, and the posts contain a column for listing what thread it is in. When the thread loads, it grabs every post that is marked for that thread and orders them.
So there aren't really any technical limitations. It's more about just how ridiculous and unmanageable threads become when they are 740 pages long.
EDIT: I meant table, not database.

If it only does that when that specific thread is loaded, then we should have 1 thread that is allowed to just get stupidly huge since it won't affect the rest of the forum.
A thread that never gets locked, goes on forever. It will become "that thread we dare not speak of" that everyone is afraid to go into. Over time, it's growth will slow from this fear, so it will only add perhaps 1-2 pages per month. But it will grow, nonetheless. People will brave it, even if only occasionally. Soon it will be thousands, tens of thousands, millions of pages long. People will tremble at the thought of entering the abyss.
Once per year, some poor pathetic newbie will start from page one and try to read the whole thing. The authorities will find him dead a month later, emaciated from lack of nutrients. The police will all look at each other, shake their heads, and say "It got another one."
It will be beautiful.
(I'm rambling, ignore me...)

No, but I could maybe recommend you to HR.
Unless you want to be my "personal" assistant?

Damn, I was hoping to get away from HR work. My last experience with that stuff left a bitter taste in my mouth like you wouldn't imagine.
Darth EDIT: Medical. I've got more than enough wrong with me to disqualify me from military service and then some.
Did you change your post from "manager" to "executive"?
Also, if no one ever went in the thread, it wouldn't grow.
Yes. I'm technically considered a manager, but I don't really manage anything. I just review reports and oversee meetings with a group of managers below me, and then browse the web and trade stocks. So, I decided to call myself an "executive" instead. Seemed more appropriate.

So you're a useless manager.
Yeah, basically. It's awesome.

Motherfucker is going straight to the moon
It's been a long time since major technical troubles, as I recall
...I may have been lied to.
B.net: Kusanku
now that you said that it's going to be locked at 99
The way the forums are structured now, it wouldn't do shit
But there's a sense of tradition
And also a sense of not having huge annoying threads that are impossible to get into
EDIT: Turns out, it wouldn't hurt anything. I understand now. Thanks everyone!

well he did say he didn't care what he had to do

Do you dudes never do music threads?
I mean I can see why, shit can get volatile.
what if i told you i looked like joan hollaway? can i be your personal assistant?
It's frowned upon; Tube doesn't like it when we don't bow at his altar.
Hacksaw edit: That fucking blows; medical or are you a secret faggot?
Darth EDIT: Medical. I've got more than enough wrong with me to disqualify me from military service and then some.
They are worthless fuck threads.
although i think me posting that catgirl comic did not exactly help keep it around
i hate them because of wiggin
Pff. If they got volatile there'd be a reason to have them. We don't do them because they are boring, masturbatory, worthless threads.

I kinda like talking about music.
And masturbating.
e: I mean, naa. That shit is personal.
So you're a useless manager.
