Video Game Music (Clever Bullshit Goes Here)

Sometimes videogames have pretty fucking good music. Let's talk about that.

Sometimes it's basically metal but in a video game, like in the Mega Man X games.

Sometimes it's orchestral, like in Baldur's Gate. This piece is probably my favorite in the series.

Also, Icewind Dale won all kinds of awards for its music.

Arcanum had some fantastic string quartet pieces. Sierra used to have the whole score available for free, with sheet music to go with it, but I think they took it down.

Sometimes it's downright weird.

Sometimes a guy works his ass off all by himself. The dude who composed the score for Secret of Mana and the Japan-only sequel (Seiken Densetsu 3) basically locked himself in his office and composed each game in a 24 hour period. He's a dude I'd love to talk to. The stuff he made ranges from epic high fantasy to the sort of thing you might hear backing Britney Spears.

Sometimes it's a timeless piece that everyone knows and loves.

Sometimes they take shit that's already awesome and then expand upon it so that it's even better. Hooray for Knights of the Old Republic II. At least one aspect of that game was finished.

On the flipside, sometimes it's the most irritating bullshit. Fuck you, Gold Saucer Theme.
(the in-game version of this is even more obnoxious, if such a thing is possible)

Sometimes it's so overwrought and ridiculous that you can't help but love the shit out of it. The best Bond Theme ever isn't even a Bond Theme.
Finally, OC Remix is full of awesome shit. I recommend the remixer Star Salzman. Every song he has made is fucking awesome, but the Bionic Commando remix he did is of particular note.

So, let's talk about video game music, and the merits thereof.
