Sometimes videogames have pretty fucking good music. Let's talk about that.
Sometimes it's basically metal but in a video game, like in the Mega Man X games.
Sometimes it's orchestral, like in Baldur's Gate. This piece is probably my favorite in the series.
Also, Icewind Dale won all kinds of awards for its music.
Arcanum had some fantastic string quartet pieces. Sierra used to have the whole score available for free, with sheet music to go with it, but I think they took it down.
Sometimes it's downright
weird.
Sometimes a guy works his ass off all by himself. The dude who composed the score for Secret of Mana and the Japan-only sequel (Seiken Densetsu 3) basically locked himself in his office and composed each game in a 24 hour period. He's a dude I'd love to talk to. The stuff he made ranges from epic high fantasy to the sort of thing you might hear backing Britney Spears.
Sometimes it's a timeless piece that everyone knows and loves.
Sometimes they take shit that's already awesome and then expand upon it so that it's even better. Hooray for Knights of the Old Republic II. At least
one aspect of that game was finished.
On the flipside, sometimes it's the most irritating bullshit. Fuck
you, Gold Saucer Theme.
(the in-game version of this is even more obnoxious, if such a thing is possible)
Sometimes it's so overwrought and ridiculous that you can't help but love the shit out of it. The best Bond Theme ever isn't even a Bond Theme.
Finally, OC Remix is full of awesome shit. I recommend the remixer Star Salzman. Every song he has made is fucking awesome, but the Bionic Commando remix he did is of particular note.

So, let's talk about video game music, and the merits thereof.

Inon Zur is awesome. He did the music for Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, which explains why it was so much better than the music in Shadows of Amn.
t Glorfindel: Yeah, they are. I should add them to the OP.
your megaman music isnt working

Click on the link at the top of the video, you silly goose. Some of the stuff I posted has embedding disabled, which I hoped to fix just by putting up the URL and nothing else. The board tried to embed them automatically.
t coldbird: If you can get it running, you should play it. Don't bother with the real-time combat. Stick to turn-based. Also, save often and in a new slot every time. You'll thank me when you encounter a savefile-corrupting bug.
The faux guitar solo at 0:43 wrecks face.

i still think the opening of wild arms is the best i've ever seen or heard, in terms of videogame soundtracks

The Kingdom Hearts series has some very good stuff when you get to the big orchestral tracks that have the main theme in them.
And basically World of Warcraft. I'm probably the only one who played that game with the music going full tilt. I hated to be on Ventrilo because I had to mute everything else.
akira yamaoka... sogood

Just stay away from the ones with vocals. Joe Romersa's singing is seriously like aural diarrhea.

Also, the classic Lucasarts games have some fantastic soundtracks as well

Dogg you are the rightest person in this thread. FFXI has absolutely beautiful music.
I admit that I feel nostalgic enough about the game that hearing the music from Bastok and stuff makes me feel a little misty.
ace combat 4 and 5 had excellent music
What is best in life? ZAMN music.
You're awesome.
Zero
Really gets you pumped, that one.
I haven't seen Kirby or Katamari Damacy mentioned yet either, c'mon.
