Paupers, and why posting in a forum is preferable to riding them.
As an English/Writing major, I have it fairly easy at college. None of my classes require a lot of intensive homework or note-taking, outside of a shit-load of reading (almost all of which is interesting and good literature), and my borderline non-existent class attendance is usually just fine. Despite the fact that I can spend a lot of my time at this place just coasting, one thing always pops up that completely destroys my life for periods of 12 to 24 hours:
PAPERS(or essays, or whatever else you want to call them)
Right now I'm at my school's library attempting to write 3500 words comparing the religious perspectives of William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This paper is due at 2 P.M. tomorrow, and I have about 200 words written. I did take some of what I like to call 'study drugs', which are helping, but my attention span is still quite narrow, and my level of motivation remains hovering just above zero. As with just about every paper I've ever written, I had made plans on starting this one about a week ago to make things easy on myself--plans that were roundly rejected in favor of drinking a lot and sitting on my ass. Luckily, the closer I get to a deadline, the faster and seemingly better I work.
So, SE++, how do you approach writing of papers? What was the most recent one you had to write? Are you just some kind of faggot biology/chemistry/etc. student who just has to write lab reports and such that pretty much write themselves? Would you be willing to come to where I am and put a bullet in my head?
I am writing a 350 word "essay" for a contest in which last year's winning essay was this:
WHY I’M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN
Julie Ziler
I can remember us as little girls adorned in tri-cornered hats that our Granny had saved from the Bicentennial of America.
Summer was magic, but especially July 4th – the best holiday. The intense Missouri heat, fireworks, and our voices bellowing patriotic tunes instilled in me a deep love, appreciation, and pride for America.
As my fingers flew to list on paper the things that make me proud, I began to realize there is so much more than I could have ever imagined.
America is freedom, one enormous reason for pride. I glory in seeing that America is freedom to all people and that we eagerly give freedom to those without it. Knowing that we dare to fight and defend the idea of liberty and freedom makes my heart beat with pride.
As words found their way to paper, I saw that there is much to be proud of – thoughts that can or cannot be expressed – things like justice, bravery, and strength, that define America.
America is the land of opportunity – opportunity to have jobs, businesses, lands, homes, and dreams. It gives everyone the chance – the opportunity – to fulfill these if you choose.
I’m proud that we were not founded with selfish intents, but that we were founded on moral principles and the desire to do right. We had some of the best and most outrageously wonderful ideas about government and people’s rights. Because we were founded the right way, through God, we have been a great nation.
The fact that we have the Constitution and Bill of Rights is something to celebrate. We know our voice is alive and able to steer the nation. I’m proud we give people rights like voting, freedom of the press, of speech, of religion, to pursue happiness and life.
I am proud of America, and more than proud I am intensely grateful for her and the people who defend her.
There aren’t any fireworks, hats or songs today; the 4th is months away, but the pride and joy of being an American rings on steadily in my heart.
oh god I'm uncontrollably vomiting just reading it
I should probably be writing a formal analysis of a Manet painting right now and I actually really like the subject but I'm not sure how to bullshit four to five pages on contrast and its ambiguous nature.

The worst thing about my English class is that my teacher loves my writing so she gets really confused and affronted when I don't do her stupid assignments.
And she looks mystified when I correct her in class or start laughing audibly at her comparing the SPCA to Auschwitz.

I'm gonna see if I can bullshit a six page paper on globalization without finding a single outside reference.

I have a rewrite of "Thomas Kuhn's idea of Incommensurability"(3 pages), "Did external factors have an influence on the formation and spread of knowledge during the Copernican revolution"(5 pages), and then "To what extent do society and culture have on scientific change. Is the this influence positive or negative?"(10 pages). All due by Dec 10th, then I'm done with the terrible philosophy of science class.

It's much harder to write a paper with a maximum amount of words than one with a minimum amount of words.

Fandy, is this for FI? I have heard nothing but terrible things about those classes.
Yeah, it totally is. FI is just a terrible, watered-down English class designed to make it easy for engineering/premed/math majors to get their English credits while simultaneously depriving anyone interested in an academic English class of their education. And the kicker is that it's mandatory, so no matter how much of a waste of time you feel like it is, you have to take it.
I could seriously rant for hours about how frustrating it is. I love English, I love reading and writing and discussing the intricacies of literature, and they have totally scrapped that particular English class formula for something not unlike "bullshitting papers 101: mongoloid edition".

EDIT: fixed the line breaks
Writing a philosophy paper right now on why life is absurd but we shouldn't kill ourselves anyway. Very uplifting. Thanks, Camus!
I'd help you out, but you know...travel times and all, most likely.
Now it assists in my procrastination at work, but to a far lesser extent.
it's only got to be 90+ pages
it's due in two weeks
this year it's "What The United States Flag Stands For"
Everyone writes a page. Piece of cake!
(It doesn't need to be coherent, right...?)
look I have an outline here just write a page of it a piece you ninnys
Or like the Chineese flag and refer to it as "The future US flag"
also got accepted to an advanced fiction writing class which is awesome
And she looks mystified when I correct her in class or start laughing audibly at her comparing the SPCA to Auschwitz.
write for ten minutes
set a timer for ten minutes
post on forums for ten minutes
repeat until paper is finished
Make about 80 pages of it really graphic sex scenes.
And I have to do a sociology paper about deviance/conformity and social control. Should be pretty easy, but fuck sociology.
and then I gotta model these items
:winky:
