HELLO INTERNET.
I have to confess that this was my reaction
I was just chuckling through the whole thing

sometimes i get a little pissed because i run into people who think that talents are this magical force that some special people were born with
they go
they're all 'oh wow how do you draw so well and are also a good musician and oh my gosh you're a good cook as well? i would kill for that, how do you do it'
and i go, 'by busting my ass'
and they go 'hahaha, i can't even draw a stick man or play a guitar! i wish i was artistic, but i'm not so i can't do it!'
and i go, 'then be good at art'
and they're all, 'oh gosh, i can't even draw a straight line and i tried to play a guitar one time and it sounded bad! hahaha because i was not born with your natural artist talent!'
and i get pissed and go, 'look, i can do this because i've been breaking my ass at it for twenty goddamned years, and even given that, i'm nowhere as good as i should be. any skill i have is because i earned it, hunched over a shitty table with cramped hands, doing the same goddamned thing over and over and over until i got it right. same thing with music and cooking and coding and any other fucking thing you care to name, and if you continue to trivialize the things i have basically wasted my health doing while you concern yourself with nothing more fulfilling than drinking until you puke and poon-tang, i will vomit blood and bile from my eyes until it drowns us both, you lazy, lazy turd.'
okay, maybe i'm a bit more diplomatic than that
but not much
preach it brother
this is so true of almost any achievement
almost anyone can run a marathon
or climb Mt. Everest
or sail around the world by themselves
the only reason they don't, is because they don't care enough to pay the price
period
You're being entirely too broad brush here. Barring disability which isnt fair to include in this discussion there are plenty of reasons why some people have skills others dont. Economics is one. I'll never be a good polo player for example. Another is upbringing and education, both of which vary not in quality but also in specific styles. The reason I'm a writer and my sister is a teacher is because both of us has the same inspirational teacher at school who definitely imparted a lot of ideals onto us.
Saying that anyone can sail around the world if they pay enough of a price is too simplistic. Ignoring the fact that most people literally cant pay the price the emotional sacrifices and determination are not something that can just be learned by rote with enough effort. The development of a child throughout their life shapes their mental status.
While technically anyone could climb everest with enough hard work, the amount of work each person would have to put in would vary incredibly. And everyone has a limit.
Luck, chance and all kinds of random events also determine what people can achieve. I have a friend who was a professional Rugby Union player and 3 months from being called up to international status who was in an accident and paralyzed. He put in the effort, he paid his dues. He commited to that sport more than most people on Earth, and he didn't achieve his goals.
Im just saying, dont get snappy when someone doesn't achieve something or is envious of someone elses talents. People arent born with skills inherently, but it is not as reductionist as 'just fucking work hard'. If people said that to me when I praised their talents I would think they were gigantic assholes.
You;re entirely too angry all the time Druhim. I dont understand why you think I am a fucking retard. I thought my post was quite reasoned and balanced. For one thing, I wasn't saying you were wrong. I was saying there was more to it than you said in yours, and perhaps you could have replied in kind, or maybe your post I quoted left out those things for other reasons.
Either way I'm sorry I offended you so much. Genuinely dont want to stir shit, not like that other thread with the confusion over impossible and improbable which I never intended to spread like that. Maybe I really am pretty bad at conveying my points in words.

Well, Dru is right to a point. There are some areas that people simply will not excel in, however, there are other fields of that same area that they could adapt themselves to, but often they avoid the entire field because of one wrong turn. Lets say you meet someone who says "oh I could never be an artist" as they check out your sketches, but because of this they never discover their painting or drafting ability.
And honestly, its a shame. Sure, there are somethings people cannot do because they won't, but oftentimes there are things people can do that they won't simply because they do not apply themselves in the right way.
Talent may not be inherent, but having a natural affinity for a skill is certainly a large factor in how much better you will be than someone who merely works as hard as you do. Not all singers can be opera quality, no matter how hard they try.

see, the funny thing is that in my post I said nothing about placing first in a marathon or climbing Everett the fastest, I just said almost anyone can do those things if they care enough about them
any of you motherfuckers, 'cept Stale, could do a goddamn marathon if it was important enough to you
logically, not everyone can place first
but that's such an obvious observation that I didn't feel it needed to be mentioned
Scarab however seems to feel the fucking obvious needs to be explained in detail
hell, even Stale could do a marathon but he'd either have to do it in a wheelchair or it would take him fucking forever and he'd be in pretty bad shape by the end

Well that bridges into a physical quality, but as I said, lets say you can't be an opera singer, but you may be an awesome blues or rock singer. Just because you aren't Freddie Mercury doesn't mean you should give up on singing.
Alot of people think they are bad or merely decent singers because they only sing other people's materials. I, for instance, have a very different vocal range compared to most singers/songs out there, but I can project pretty well, and have a good range. I'm a half step down/up from most singers, though, so I suck balls at karaoke/rock band, but when I'm working with a song I created, I like to think I have a pretty good voice for it.

so are we talking about just doing a thing, or are we talking about doing it well? Because of course anyone can just do a thing, it doesn't mean they are or ever will be good at it.

But, if you asked me to draw a dog, I could draw a dog. If you asked me to draw a dog well, I probably couldnt.
The thing I think you are confused upon is the difference between running a marathon and winning a marathon.
If someone ran one in 8 hours you wouldn't say they had talent for marathon running now would you? Which I think is what Knob was talking about when he mentioned cookery and drawing and stuff.
I can fry some bacon. But I cant make a souffle. Doesn't make me a chef.
Obviously anyone could run a marathon if they wanted to. I walk about 6 or 7 miles each day just to go to work. Thats nearly a quarter of the way there, and Im not even trying.
The point was that having a talent for marathon running doesnt mean you simply finish.
I think, as I said - perhaps thats what you meant all along.
Clearly if you put in enough effort you could improve your time. I could probably with a few years of solid training get under 2 hours. But would I ever be the worlds best? Well that is not entirely down to pure effort. There are other factors which effect that, which is what my other post was saying.
Fucking Everett. I spent the first few years of my life there. My memories include: Rain, breakfast with my dad before he went to work, listening to old 7inch Disney records with my sister, our dog biting my sister and having to be put down, and making a fort in the woods that we had to abandon because we found an enormous spider blocking the path one day.
Oh, and losing the visor for my space legoman. That was tragic. He was my favorite.
Its especially tragic because of how I lost it. I was playing with him outside, and made him crash on a "harsh alien world" which meant, being everett, was like a mud puddle or something. His helmet got all dirty, so being a kid, I decided to wipe it off, and give it a good clean by, you guessed it, putting it in my mouth. All kids think their mouths are like those ball cleaning whirlydings you find at golf courses, I mean, you put something in, suck on it, and it comes out clean! Magic!
Anyways, I pop the helmet it, suck it, and suddenly the visor pops off and whoops down my throat it goes.

I'm gonna go with the whole 'talent can be inherent, but you need to fucking work at it'. Jesus christ,if one more person asks how i can write songs I'm gonna stamp 'must try harder' on their fucking forehead and then force feed them all the shitty songs i wrote trying to get better. It takes fucking effort and the realisation that till you're past being shit you won't be good,at anything. i will say, i don't know how people start later in life and get good at drawing
because i learned to draw back when i was a kid, and didn't do anything else with my time, i would just sit in my room for hours drawing till my eyes crossed and my wrist felt like it was on fire.
now i'm busy all the time, so i don't know if i'd be able to learn from scratch now
i mean i'm still learning, but i'm not trying to climb over the enormous obstacles that you do when you first start anymore.
i go into a trance when i draw, it's strange.
i will sit there and draw and draw and draw for hours, and i don't think, i don't get hungry, i don't feel the need to pee, i can't hear people talking to me
until i break out of it and suddenly i am starving, dying of thirst and am close to wetting myself.

i mean look at this!:
i was producing masterpieces from the moment i decided to be an artist, which was sometime in grade 7
i love how i've dredged that up twice in the past week
it's my favorite thing that i've ever done
