So it looks like I'll be leaving my 360 at home when I leave for college in a months time (my parents are now addicted to Netflix instant view), and the PS3 will finally get the love its been missing out on. This is what I've got:
Valkyria Chronicles
Warhawk
GTA IV
Ratchet & Clank: ToD
Uncharted
Looking for some not so recent releases only on the PS3 to flesh out my collection. Not so recent because I can't really spend $60 a game right now, VC was my last indulgence on that end. PS3 exclusives because if it was a multi-console release in the last few years I probably played it on the 360.
Disgaea 3 will last you quite a long time. Heavenly Sword is good, but short. Resistance 1 has a long single-player/splitscreen campaign, but is a very generic game. (I liked it a lot and it has very solid online, but it doesn't do anything unexpected) Resistance 2 has a much better single-player campaign, no splitscreen campaign, but does offer 8-player co-op online (this can't be overstated - it's awesome) and 60-player competitive.
Should have mentioned, PSN suggestions are awesome and I have a 20 gig so PS2/PS1 games are out
I'll check it out Hadji, Wipeout was the first game I had on my PSP (that I ended up selling) but probably one of the few I ever really enjoyed. I remember seeing screens for the PSN game but then it got delayed.
About Disgaea 3....never played 1/2 and I don't really have a means of doing so. How important is this?
Give a Sackboy a good home even if you have to bum the cash from a bud (Little Big Planet).
Outside of $60 titles if you didn't play Burnout Paradise on 360 I'd pick up the ps3 version (I hear the ps3 version was the lead platform. Better framerate and all that jazz). I'm not even really a racing fan and I LOVE Burnout Paradise (recently picked it up for $20 on Black Friday). IMO Paradise is what GTA4 would of been if it was just a driving game (open world not super simmy). If you can't find it on sale in disc form it can also be downloaded via PSN.
Other possible under $60 titles:
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Hot Shots Golf: Out of Bounds
Resistance (so you can pick up R2 in 6 months on the cheap and know whats up)
Also don't forget PSN games such as Wipeout HD, Super Stardust HD, Bionic Commando, Mega Man 9, Penny Arcade Adventures, Prince of Persia Classic, and Super Street Fighter HD Remix. Not to mention if your into board games Catan is coming soon I believe.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
I'll recommend Heavenly Sword here. You should be able to find it used somewhere for really cheap (20 bucks or even lower if you're lucky). It's well, well worth 20 bucks. It's simply fun as hell, and looks gorgeous. It's short, but for 20 bucks I don't think you'll really feel ripped.
Wait a tic. 20 gig ps3s are ps2 backwards compatible. (And all ps3s are ps1 compatible)
PSN exclusives PixelJunk Monsters and Eden are pretty rad. (Wipeout HD is pretty great if you like racers at all)
Meant 40 gig, my bad. A decision I regret to this day :x
Well, I didn't really have a choice. When I bought my PS3 it was during 40/80-only time and I didn't think $100 was worth 40Gb more and PS2 games. I was young and stupid.
I'll throw in one more vote for Heavenly Sword. It is, in my opinion, the third best PS3 exclusive, right behind MGS4 and Uncharted. Phenomenal game, so gorgeous.
EDIT: Also, Super Stardust HD is a must-own from the PSN. I've spent as much time with that game as I have my favorite disc-based releases.

Even though the sequel is out, the original Motorstorm is still awesome. Probably my favorite chaotic arcade racer (well, until Motorstorm:PR came along).
If you are even slightly interested in horror games, Siren: Blood Curse is the best horror game i've played in the last few years.
Finally, Folklore is an excellent adventure/rpg hybrid kind of game with some pretty fun sixaxis usage.
Ferseriously - Siren: Blood Curse. If you're in the UK you should be able to find it on a Blu-ray for not-too-much. If not, it'll take up about 9GB of your HDD, but it'll only cost $40. And yes, it's the best survival horror title on the current gen consoles.
Honestly, just consider this equation. Survival horror + stealth gameplay = Siren.

I know its on the 360 as well, but I personally loved The Darkness. I was able to get mine for 20$ brand new 4 months ago. Well worth the money in my opnion, lasted me at least 10 hours I think, and I didnt do all the extra parts. There are some side jobs you can do, which will get you bonus content like strips of the comic and other things, a few of them are pretty funny to do though.
One of them is if you talk to a woman on the subway, she will make a bet with you, to see if you can get the coin she drops on the tracks before the train comes, I thought it was pretty funny considering she is about 60 or so and looks so harmless.
Oh yeah, Metal Gear solid 4 can be good, assuming you like those games. Im not sure how it would work not playing the other 3 (not inclding acid/ the orginal metal gears), but they do have a free database you can download, which has just about every bit of info across all the games in the series in it, so you might be able to fill in the gaps with that. Granted its 60$ around where I live, but you might be able to find it cheaper somewhere else.
Hey Meatflower, on the off chance your parents have a HD Tivo netflix instant view is now available on that, so maybe you can keep your xbox. (While perhaps not as slick it actually has an advantage over the xbox netflix in that it will automatically switch to SD if your network connection can't keep up and will go back to HD if it improves)

I'm sure this is an age old question but if ps2 emulation is software, why can't Sony release backwards compatibility as a download? Even a highly paid for download?

Its only half software. They emulated the emotion engine chip, (cpu) but still had the physical graphics sythesizer (GPU)

I'll second the nomination for Folklore Motorstorm and HS. Folklore action RPG decent plot beutiful settings and hands down the best implimentation of the motion controlls I've seen. Motorstorm is damn fun but the load times and lack of splitscreen can be anoying, multiplayers fun as long as you don't go motorcyles vs anything bigger than the atv. HS beutiful well writen/acted story and a preaty solid combat system, love some of the air combos you get.
I was gonna make this thread, since I just got a PS3, and all I have is the first Resistance. I think Heavenly Sword is next on my list. I actually liked the demo for Haze (I like just about every FPS), too.
I've got a list of ten or so exclusive games I wanna get, and a few, like GTA IV that I'd just prefer on a PS controller.
About how long is Valkyria Chronicles, anyway? That demo was fucking awesome.
Heavenly sword you can get pretty cheap. Resistance has a pretty cool single player, and its cheap. Folklore is action RPGish ok, but I have yet to see it sold for cheap : /

I think it took me about 30-40 hours to finish but I'm really not sure, since I saved my New Game+ file over my old file.
Edit: Actually, I think it was around 50 hours. It's been a few weeks since I finished it so my memory is a bit hazy.

Valkyria Chronicles is absolutely incredible, seriously, get it, now. And yeah its pretty lengthy, Im not even half way through yet and Im over 23 hours and somethign seconds on it.
Anyway for the OP's question, there is a under appreciated game for PS3 called "Folklore", which should be pretty cheap to pick up now. It's actually a very good game imo and is never discussed enough, so maybe check out the demo for it to see if you'll like it.
A: Warhawk for 10 dollars is a fucking steal. B: VC while not cheap like the OP wants is GOTY quality. Get before it becomes the next increadibly awsome cult hit that cost 200 dollars and a finger on ebay.

It's been my go-to game for weeks now and I'm halfway done.
