So, I've burned through a lot of good games this year, but I am wishing to waste time this winter in a more primal manner. I'm looking for a game (it can be for my xbox, pc, ds, psp...) of the - build defenses/towers/turrets - slaughter hordes of waves of enemies - profit .... type games.
I love me some Onslaught or desktop Element TD when I'm bored, Warcraft III based TD maps are also something I love but I really don't want to re-install frozen throne for an eleventh time.
What is the rage in tower defense these days? I was playing mount & blade for a bit last month and it almost scratched the "hordes of enemies" itch, but not quite! (I already have EDF for 360, and yes, that is *sort of* the kind of thing I am talking about...)
Lots of people here dig Pixeljunk Monsters for the PS3. It's on the PSN for cheap, with DLC that includes an entire new island. A nice console take on it, as it adds a nice time element to moving around the map.
I've been playing Eternal Red most of the morning. A bit on the easy side for a TD game, but it's fun if you play it on hard mode on the shorter levels.
There's a game coming out on Steam called Defense Grid that looks like a tower defense game. I don't know if it is and I don't know if it's any good but I just thought I'd bring it to your attention.
I cannot recommend Lock's Quest for DS enough. The gameplay is split into two stages: first, you build walls and turrets and such, then the action stage comes where the enemy tries to ruin your beautiful creation and take whatever objective you're defending. Lock runs around repairing his buildings and fighting the enemy with his giant fucking wrench and some pretty cool powers.
PC game, fairly cheap. Its a bit different from most tower defense games in that the enemies can kill your towers. They aren't trying to get to the end, just wipe you out. Add a few inventive mechanics like power (all towers must be powered by sparks that are transmitted from power plants along power nodes) and tower linking (the laser towers can be joined together for a more powerful, longer-ranged but less efficient blast) and it gets hectic fast.
It also features absolutely ridiculous enemy counts. There are times in the wave mode where you can't see the ground because its carpeted in targets!
I'll second PixelJunk monsters... I loved that game, even better coop. And once you've gotten perfects on all the levels you can try the trophy challenges.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.
XNA 360 Community Games has two tower defense games already: Tower Revolution & Endless Swarm. I don't know how well they compare to other tower defense games out there since I haven't done much research into the genre, but I thought both were fun games and might buy one or both of them.
Regarding Defense Grid, check out this thread on SA for a lot of praise and a developer posting quite frequently. Aside from a few technical issues that look like they are being swiftly resolved, it seems like a real crowd pleaser.
woah. Immortal defense looks fucking hot... has anyone tried anything beyond the demo?
shots like this have me tempted.
I bought it and beat it. Some of the later levels and bosses are pretty cool, with enemies that can only be hit from one angle, others that teleport, bosses take up the entire screen, etc.
The plot is pretty damn good as well, more interesting than most RPGs.
Your character eventually starts to go insane and you can't tell whether or characters are telling you the truth, lying, or even exist at all. Eventually you may go to the afterlife and there are secret levels where you assault hell.
It's one of the most stylistically innovative games that I've ever played. The graphics actually change in later levels to reflect the emotional development of your character. It's much like Rez in that it has elements of synesthesia.
The developer is just one guy, who's still supporting the game. Patch 1.1 just came out which has support for a level and campaign editor.
Speaking of Immortal Defense, if I remember correctly from the last Tower Defense thread, our very own Fyrewulff is partially responsible for that gem.

Vector Tower Defense is my favorite, by far. You'll have to play through the later maps a dozen times to work out the perfect strategy.

Is what I used to play. I thought it was pretty fun and wasted tons of time.

Eternal Red is pretty bad.
also, thanks for lock defense, I had no idea there was a portable TD like that available. I'll pick that up ASAP.
I wish Starcraft 2 would come out sooner so I could play TD with it... Starcraft 1 just doesn't do it for me anymore.
TD always needs more laserbeems.
someone needs to mod Left4TDead. mi rite?
Lock's Quest is also 19.99 at Best Buy next week starting Sunday.
dream a little dream or you could live a little dream
sleep forever if you wish to be a dreamer
I was playing the HELL out of this for a week or so.
Lock's Quest

Whiteboard Tower Defence has a certain charm.
Let me tell you about Demon's Souls....
So that's why Engineer is my most played class...

It's not free, but the demo is like 2-3 hours long. Very fun, more depth and length than most tower defense games.
Glad you like it devoir :P I played that game for DAYS. I can't believe it's free! Mannn. I may have to go back and try it. :P
What these two said.
One of us must take the plunge!
If only I hadn't already bought a hojillion games this season.
Is the XBLA version going to have some form of co-op?
I highly suggest "Super Energy Apocalypse"
fight pollution and monsters.

I did, played for an hour. Doesn't really seam to be worth 20 bucks, and I like TD games
