This is really old at this point, but I loved the game. It's a poor man's Warcraft (Both in principle and the look/feel of it), but it's a suitable replacement. Plus, you can earn the title of "Kind of a big deal".

Huh?
How is it anything like Warcraft besides the fact that its online an is an "RPG"?
This game deserves a much better OP, considering it sucked my life away for about three years and kept me from ever getting to level cap in WoW.
I loved Guild Wars for the PvE. Large, beautiful instances with lots of plot? Emphasis on grouping? Really well-designed and fun healer class? Why yes, I would like some of that, thank you! If I could have got my friends to play with me, I would have bought each and every GW expansion.
I loved guild wars, it held my attention, and WoW couldn't. It looked nice, the world was fun to run around in, and the expansions were worth the purchase. I really can't wait for GW 2. I had the same problem with mahnmut though, not too many of my friends would play.
Aside of it offering not the same depth as a World of Warcraft, the character system is only second to the old SWG system. Dual Class always. Of course you don't have to, you can spend all your points on one side of the class. But this dual crossbreed made character creation so varied and fun. I liked the Necromance most, and i toyed a lot with it. Insted of wow i did not only hav a necromancer, i had a Necromancer/Archer - shooting area effect arrows and being armed wit a bow to get lots of corpses fast (deathmagic+survival if i am not mistaken), of course with a bloodgolem feeding off the enemys with soul feast as well also able to heal itself, very, very solid. The other char was a warrior/necromancer using plate armor and twohanded weapons being focused on the weapon skill and deathmagic rest amor piecering, a total monster. It could heal itself from corpses, spawn a decent bloodgolem and hit you really hard with an axe and of course detonate corpses whilst wearing plate. My third build was assasin/necromancer sprinting into combat, killing an enemy and either detonate it amnong the fround and/or spawn a bloodgolem AND TELEPORTING OUT, feasting on the corpses to heal back and do it again. Gave me a lot of "what the hell was that?" ^^
And thats tinkering with a single class. You can imagine how well this system works. Its vastly superior to thos specialized three-tree thing a WoW does. If the game would have been more deep it could have smashed WoW singlehandly despit the BLizz fanbase and hype.
A great game for sure. To think i have still acess to it... hmm... i think i will fire it up again some time ^^
And by the way its great for lending if you can trust your friends with your account. Always active, no fees. Great. I LIKE it.
Eh. I was in the beta for it, and had high hopes. Then I got into the beta for WoW and never looked back. Watched my roommate play it for a little bit and it never ONCE got me to think about buying the game. Something about the skills (and it was click to move, right? I don't remember at this point) really bothered me about the game. I just seemed so... boring. Sure it's free to play, but it didn't look like it offered any depth.
Default is click to move, but you can configure it to WoWstyle. And interesingly you can configure WoW as well to "click to move". This game does some core mechanics incredibly better than wow, the first being surely the char system. As being said on my list of char systems it ranks second with no compeditor being anywhere next to it downwards. The other thing it does so incredibly well are the teamup zones. In WoW you have those lists (and Guildwars has them too with expansion2) but its not the same as going somwhere and meeting people going to the same dungeon. Personally i think those "teaming zones" should be taverns, that would be the ultimate idea because that is what a tavern is supposed to be in a MMORPG. It always surprises me nobody does it ^^
That's because you never played with The Kansas City Hotsteppers.
Also it offers depth in a completely different, and arguably better, way than WoW.
The instances... yes absolutely. The gameworld... no. I mean i can go in wow to loderon lake and fish bones junk and disased fish. Then i go to the sea and i have saltwater fish. Then i go to som lake near a demonic lair an catch demonic fish.
There is simply more to do and the gameworld is incredibly rich in detail. Guildwars looks great, but you can't really do anything else besides instances or soloing - and thats the main part of a mmorpg, alright, but wow offers a simply more... living world. Guildwars is a bit "sterile".
But its still an excellent game. And considering its fee-free and absolutely beats WoW in serveral areas... an absolute winner.
I was speaking more about depth in the combat. The skill system is incredibly flexible and the interactions between a team of characters aren't as interesting in WoW. Also collision detection makes the terrain actually matter.
For as long as I played it, I believed that the game hit its peak in the mid-beta stages, changed for the worse once retail hit, and rapidly descended into MMO-alike shit.
The developers were initially pushing the game on its PvP content. Phrases like "Skill over time played!" were liberally bandied about - even on the beta boxart - and players were constantly assured that a brand new account would not have the slightest advantage over one with a hundred hours played. Guild Wars was frequently compared to online FPS games - by PR folks, community managers and even the developers.
For most of beta, this held true. But as release crept ever closer, it dawned that the people with control of ArenaNet's moneybags had their sights on Blizzard's favourite cash cow for some time. Release came, and there was no new PvP content. Excessive grinding in the PvE game was required to compete in PvP. An account with a hundred hours played was not just an advantage, it was a necessity. Guild Wars did not only have the potential to be a competitive online RPG, it was, for a long time, a competitive online RPG. But ArenaNet repeatedly showed that they just did not care about competition. Content patches and expansions gave dozens of maps and hundreds of hours of gameplay to the PvE game, while PvP got precisely dick. To my knowledge, the only expansion with notable PvP content - Factions - added four (?) glorified Random Arena maps and a semi-random team gameplay mode (with one map, which had multiple stages, similar to Team Fortress 2's Hydro) which was never expanded on.
I looked at the Guild Wars Wiki today - I miss the game, or rather its promise, from time to time - and was upset, but not surprised, to see that no new PvP content had been added since what little came with Factions, all those years ago.
As far as I know, Guild Wars' competitive scene died shortly after Factions. There is no doubt in my mind that had the developers stuck with their original path, it would still be alive today.
People who are claiming the game lacks depth need to realize that having 50 skills on your skillbar does NOT equal depth.
Yes. That's exactly what it was. It lacked the number of skills that WoW had.
:wishes the eye roll emote was still here:
Well then, would you care to explain what the hell you are talking about then?
Cause right now it just looks like you didn't like the game for purely personal reasons (which is completely reasonable, I detest WoW but can't really quantify why) and are just making shit up to justify it. GW has plenty of depth, especially if you've ever tried to create a decent PvP build.

I don't think GW really had enough end-game content to keep itself going. GWEN dungeons were mostly the same and could mostly just be ursan farmed.
Elite areas were pretty limited and were also ursan farmed (or used oher gimmick builds)
PVP was also pretty limited, despite a decent amount of content. There isn't much for casual PVPers to aspire for besides farming points in AB/Aspenwood, and the jump to "hardcore" PVP content is a pretty big one.
HoH needed a good team or a decent FOTM pug just to get past first few rounds on a heavy night, and guild battles are pretty exclusive.
That said, GW's combat system is incredibly engaging and rewarding.

The PVP was never really interesting to me. The PVP in Dark Age of Camelot was infinitely more fun than Guild Wars, and GW was touted to have some of the best PVP out there. Oh you can make a level 20 char with all the skills and stuff so you can jump right into the PVP... Sounds like a great idea. Ugh..
The skills were boring and lifeless to me. Clicking on a person and then just hitting numbers without really having to do anything else wasn't very fun to me. I think the thing that I hated was how slow combat was compared to WoW. I think that GW just came out at the wrong time. If it had come out a year earlier I'm sure many people would still be enjoying it... But between GW and WoW, if you were looking for a real MMO experience, GW was definitely NOT going to give it to you. But opinions opinions lol.
Also the animosity against WoW from GWers always makes me laugh. "OMG I HATE WOW!! GW IS SO MUCH BETTER!!one!! FUCK WOW!! I HAVE A HUGE PENIS!"
(Please note I haven't played WoW in over 2 years, and have NO intentions of ever installing that damn game ever again)
The thing wich disappoints me the mist about WoW are the instances. Filled with monsters and bosses and some repeat-it-to-death usable loot. Guildwars had such nice instances. The first mission alone where you had to run from the Scar army back to the wall... feels more like it, absolutely. And i also consider its grapic style better than WoW, being less comic and more realistic.
Whilst talking about it, i think i go and download it and give it a shot again. Fuck WoW grind, lets play a game where i can focus on tweaking char builds.
And i don't think the skills are boring and lifeless. On the contrary. I think i make a warrior/spiritualist. Someone who can use a weapon and buff it ^^

I haven't met that many GWers with that attitude. Pretty much everyone from my guild left for WoW after exhausting all of GW's content.
But the huge penis thing is totally true.
Also, I'm confused about what you said involving the skills and the pace of the game. How much PVP did you play?

I have never hated an opinion more than yours.
What? You think that success in competition should depend on your mad lootz and how mighty your character's e-cock is? Fuck off. It should depend on the neckbeard behind the controls. What you ask for is horrible game design and it's fucking tragic that it has gained such popularity.
It's because of cunts like you that Guild Wars is ruined.
I was only in the beta, and it was not fun at all. My roommate was really hooked on the game for a few months, then it just died from him too. I watched him do a lot of PVP, and it didn't look like he was even enjoying himself at all.
I probably spent about a week trying my best to get into the game, but in the end WoW got my money. Whether or not that is a good thing remains to be seen, haha.
Aaah Guild Wars. The PvP in this game could be so amazing, when you've got a group of 8 doing GvG. 4-man TA was really good too. The PvE was pretty fun at times, but nothing amazing. It got old after the first campaign, really. The game does lack a certain PvE atmosphere, but the team PvP was fantastic.

Oh, PVP blew balls in betas unless you did guild battles. And even then you still had to wear the stupid apron things.

And please note, I fucking hate how every MMO nowadays is a "mad loot" frenzy. If you don't have the loot, you can't enjoy/play the game. Which is why I don't play WoW anymore. Once I hit 60, the only thing left was to grind instance to make the game easier for me. Fuck that shit.
I play City of Heroes now. Much more enjoyable than any of the other MMOs out there.

I've never played DAoC so I can't really compare, but I played Warhammer for a while and PvP for both were fun in their own ways. And being able to create max level characters for PvP is great, you can be very flexible and test out all sorts of stuff without having a grind a new character. In WoW if a group needs a priest and your only max character is a Mage you're pretty fucked, but in GW you can just role a monk real quick. It allows for easier access to PvP.
And really, every MMO ever the combat has been clicking on a person and hitting numbers. How you can hold that against GW and not every other MMO in existence is just beyond me. That's not a valid complaint.
The thing about GW is that it's really not meant to be an MMO. It's focused purely on combat, there is no crafting to grind. When the game first came out the dev's said it was more like a card game than an MMO. So yeah, if you came to GW looking for lots of grind, lots of crafting, and people stealing your mob spawns while you grind you came to the wrong spot.
And don't pretend like WoW players don't systematically shit all over every MMO ever released. Every game community game-shits, WoW probably is just targeted more because it's the biggest.
Haha, yes. Touch Ranger. Such a pro build. All the top teams stacked Rangers, and no team would last a minute unless they brought Ranger counters. Never once in my Guild Wars career did I see a team field a Warrior. It was all Touch Rangers.
Oh, wait. None of that is true. In fact, the opposite is true. Fuck me! How did I get so confused?
The PVP was never really interesting to me. The PVP in Dark Age of Camelot was infinitely more fun than Guild Wars, and GW was touted to have some of the best PVP out there. Man DAOC PvP was all waiting around for something to happen.
It is now. But when it was out it was great. Running around Emain Mancha looking for those fruity Hibernians to try and grind some exp... Then jumping them half way into battle was awesome. Also taking over forts was fun as hell too.
I was only in the beta, and it was not fun at all. My roommate was really hooked on the game for a few months, then it just died from him too. I watched him do a lot of PVP, and it didn't look like he was even enjoying himself at all.

Thats geared aroud subscription policy. To keep customers you let them grind and compede. I also think its not the best idea from a gameplay viewpoint but it has finnancial implications. Sadly.

Nope.
Hmm. Well at least that's how it felt like. You got the gear and some "starter" equipment and was sent on your way to the Arena. But the guys in the Arena, who actually got to 20 themselves, immediately had the advantage on you because they had better gear.
If I'm wrong on that, then my opinion of the game changed infinitely and I'll be willing to accept that GW > WoW then. :P

WTS my left testicle 4 GW2 news.
Also I think you are a bot.
I loved the fact that you could hit max level so quick. Takes out all the grinding so you can go do fun shit.
And yes, for the love of all that is holy, we need some damn GW2 news.

Pain in the ass getting a Group to do your missions.
PvP <---The only PvP I actually enjoy is AB in Factions.
Unless you enjoy HA and GvG, this silly game won't last long on you.

It's about Build.
Whoever has the cheapest build wins.
Eg. A silly Touch Ranger will pretty much pwned any Melee Class.

Maybe if you and your team sucked.
Touch rangers are hardly a threat.
Oh, wait. None of that is true. In fact, the opposite is true. Fuck me! How did I get so confused?
It is now. But when it was out it was great. Running around Emain Mancha looking for those fruity Hibernians to try and grind some exp... Then jumping them half way into battle was awesome. Also taking over forts was fun as hell too.
Hahaha! The Bibs. I still have nightmares about those things!
No it didn't make you immediately gimped. What the hell are you talking about?
This was how many months ago? Just like an RTS, balance changes. Touch rangers stopped being good a while ago (if they were ever good).
I think I saw 24 touch rangers in AB once.
But that's almost believable.
