i dont necessarily have a problem with the civil union solution, but it's unfortunate that it's basically conceding that a large portion of this country refuses to give a basic right to a minority
It's not really a basic right if you need a license for it.
You need a license to own a gun in a lot of states.
Hell, fishing is a basic right in California, and you need a license for that, too.
I'd like to see the section of the California constitution that protects fishing as a right. Go ahead and find it for me.
The people shall have the right to fish upon and from the public lands of the State and in the waters thereof, excepting upon lands set aside for fish hatcheries, and no land owned by the State shall ever be sold or transferred without reserving in the people the absolute right to fish thereupon; and no law shall ever be passed making it a crime for the people to enter upon the public lands within this State for the purpose of fishing in any water containing fish that have been planted therein by the State; provided, that the legislature may by statute, provide for the season when and the conditions under which the different species of fish may be taken.

Is Obama going on a note?
We need him on sunglasses on a note.
Even if it is a note that doesn't represent any worth.

I do so love it when this section of California's state constitution comes up in a discussion.

Also, one group you need politically, the other you hate.
You generally don't tell the people you agree with 90% of the time to go fuck themselves, especially if you need their help. I'd also wager theres more division on this issue internally amongst blacks and latinos then there is in the LDS church.
I mean we do live in a country that allied with Stalin to take down Hitler. Choosing the lesser of two evils is like our past time.

You would just think that a group that gets constantly gets scapegoated would be less likely to do the same to others, but if they don't want to take a real look at how to make inroads into the black and hispanic communities, I'm certainly not going to lose sleep over it.

The fact is that on the national level huge inroads have been made in America on the whole issue, including acceptance or at least tolerance of whats thought to be the homosexual lifestyle. Inertia is going to win this one out eventually, but theres a case to be made to push the agenda via legislation now (once society fails to grind to a halt due to homosexual marriage being made legal, the more reasonable of its opponents will give up the ghost). Honestly though much of the animosity in the minority communities still comes from their respective churches on the local level, and rather then combat them on a direct level I think its better to go around them and just prove them wrong.

Yes deacon the fact that gay marriage has been made into a religious issue can't possibly have roots in religious organizations that are pushing for it.

So the answer is... pick the white church and blame them?

Well, it could be the fact that among the black and Latino communities, it wasn't in fact the whole community that was responsible, but the old people that were responsible. The way to make inroads there is to wait for them to die.
And you didn't see the black and Latino community donating millions upon millions of dollars and thousands upon thousands of man hours to the "yes on 8" campaign, whereas you did see the Mormons doing that. So, you know, I guess you could call it "scapegoating," if by "scapegoating" you mean "holding the people who were most responsible for proposition 8 passing responsible for proposition 8 passing."

Would love to see you try and cite this.
I thought it was common knowledge that the Mormons put by far the most $$$$$$ in the fight

Dude, you can't be a minister if you smoke pot.
unitarian, dogg, they're all toasted
Only one of these groups spent millions to make sure the prop passed, and is much more easily targeted/identified then by going "you people".
