When in-game censorship goes bad...

So I've been watching the Home disaster unfold for a bout a month now. One of the things that blows my mind is that Sony is trying to make a social atmosphere, and then truncates the English language to make it "kid friendly"... The language censor has no concept of context and will blindly kill words that under normal circumstances have no "bad" connotation in the first place. Let me give you a non-exhaustive list of what this things eats.

---
Let me show you so****ing <---- (meth)
I'm ****ing a pizza <---- (cook)
Marry ******mas <--- (christ)
we put the rice in the *** <
(pot)
I was the ***** in that game. <--- (loser)
this thing is ri***ulous <---- (dic)
Bill i****cellent"<---- (sex)
I have some new s****<--- (hoes)
My friend is ***ish <---- (jew)
***** saves, and redeems for valuable prizes <--- (jesus)
my ****s hurt <--- (joint)
---

Immature words like "pee" "poo" and "fart" are off the list. Of course you got your "heavy hitters" that don't show up.

What I find so strange was if you were to make a social networking system, and then actively censor what you can say, how can that even serveas a basis for socializing?

Can anyone come up with another system like this that's just as bad? Or did Sony enter into a whole new level of inep***ude here?

Bungie's filter for Halo 3 censors the word 'on'.

I have no words to describe that. Also, you can't put "Bungie" anywhere in the filename or description.

However, you can get any censored word, including the 'big' ones past the filter if you take a screenshot in a game. Once you take a screenshot and name/describe it, it immediately uploads to bungie.net. However, if you then exit out and attempt to upload the same screenshot to your file share, the filter will catch it.

It will also detect the word 'ass' in "Assault", so it will also censor it's own gametype names in Xbox Live lobbies. Did I mention it just doesn't censor the word, it replaces the entire thing with just one word, "Blam!"?

They just didn't want anyone to use the phrase, "Massive hard-on"

It says I'm too young to play it. I don't understand, I can legally do all of the following: buy cigarettes, watch (or make) porn, own firearms, etc. but I'm not old enough to play Home? (in all seriousness if someone knows a fix for this other than making a sub account, please do share)

I haven't had the opportunity to witness this alleged debacle.

Why the fuck would it censor Jew.

    Or Jesus.

Sony is so goddamned retarded and shit like this is why they deserve their financial trouble. How more out of touch could they be?

Overreact much? I don't know why, but censorship like this seems like a staple from asian games I've played, although why it shows up in Home I don't know. It's possible Sony is gunshy after their lyrical mistake with LBP.

The problem with censorship is that people assume the worst about anything that is censored. For example, peanut ****er and jelly sandwich.

Any time censorship takes away the ability to insult people using conventional words, people will just find some other random word and start using that as a pejorative until people complain about it.

Anyhow, on topic, have they returned the ability to use voice chat yet? Last I heard they removed it. With this entirely broken censoring system they have there is really no other way to communicate unless everyone on there are star people and speak through stars.

Seriously though, Jew is censored? That seems wrong in so many ways.
