Retro games hidden inside modern games - more fun than Russian stacking dolls!

The best kind of easter egg is when a developer includes a full, commercially released game from a previous generation within a new release, usually as a secret or an unlockable reward. They're usually terrific nostalgia trips for fans and great surprises for newcomers to a series. For example, after beating Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks, you could opt to play the arcade version of Mortal Kombat 2. Or back when Tekken 2 was released on the PSX, Namco was kind enough to cover the load times with a game of Galaga. There are even rare times when the bonus game surpasses the main game - the arcade version of Donkey Kong was more fun than DK64.

So, why not make a small list of popular games within games? My personal favorite is getting to play the original Metroid after beating Metroid: Zero Mission. Not only is it appropriate to include, but damn, if the original isn't harder than the remake due to lack of a map.

Other notables:
Symphony of the Night (with "improved" voice acting) is hidden in The Dracula X Chronicles
House of the Dead 2 is unlocked after beating HotD3 on the XBOX
Pigsweeper. When you're surrounded by The Many, a Minesweeper clone helps keep your sanity

Namco I guess actually owns the copyright to having playable games during load times.

This is why you can play Galaga while you're waiting for Ridge Racer (PS1) to load, or RallyX when you're waiting for Ridge Racer (PSP) to load, etc. Tekken 5 let's you play StarBlade when it's loading, as well as from a menu that also contains the arcade versions of Tekken 1-3.

Test Drive (absolutely horrid racer-style game for the PS2) had Pong on the loading screens and, upon the loading being finished, you had to hit START to get to Test Drive. I never did. I sat there and played Pong for 6 hours, tried TD for 10 minutes, then kept it for arcade value.

Scarab: Link to the Anaconda music.

One of the things I like about Free Radical was they were in the habit of releasing their soundtracks online for free.

I still fire up the Doom 3 collector's edition on the Xbox and play Doom from time to time. Doom II is a hell of a lot easier when you have a co-op partner. If I remember right, the expansion pack includes Final Doom and Master Levels for Doom II as well. The collector's edition of Quake IV also shipped with Quake II, which was pretty awesome.

These aren't easter eggs, but I'm just as happy with a pack-in,

You are wrong about DK64. The main game was amazing, but what was funner than it was this...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jT4gzLAryCs

The awesome part is next month DK64 comes out for Virtual Console so you will get the main game, Jetpac (above), and Donkey Kong original all for that single price.

e: Also apparently Tekken 5 had like Tekken 1,2 & 3 in it. Is this true with the version you can download for PS3?

Doubly considering how terrible the NES port of the original was.

It's sort of related, but if you cleared out Sonic Adventure 2 100%, you unlocked the original Green Hill Zone, rendered with polys but with the camera on the side and played on a 2D plane.

The Original Prince of Persia (1 and 2) in the Sands of Time (Xbox version only I think. Others just had PoP1). The (SoT) Prince even says something about how "this area looks to be built upon some old ruins" when you find/unlock them.

In addition to SotN, the original Rondo of Blood is also available in Dracula X chronicles.

Ninja Gaiden Black got rid of the NES NG games, and replaced them with Arcade NG game.

Super Spy Hunter (NES) had a hidden mini-game when you continued where you played pong against the computer. Where each point earned netted you an extra life.

Rogue Squadron 3 had all three original Star Wars Arcade games.

I really liked how all the Super Mario Advance games included an improved version of the original Mario Bros., complete with multiplayer.

Let's see... other nifty stuff... Super Punch-Out!! was included in Fight Night: Round 2 (or so I hear), Wario Ware had a cute remake of Dr. Mario, Bioshock came with Pipe Dream (well... sorta'), the demo for Metal Gear Solid 2 came with Zone of the Enders (yuk yuk).

Wait ... what? Damn it, apparently I suck. I finished Sands of Time but I didn't notice the original PoP being unlocked. I also had Rogue Squadron 3 and only had the first Star Wars arcade game. (I saw the cabinet for Empire Strikes Back but couldn't access it for some reason.)

Including Road Rash, Space Harrier, and Outrun in the Shenmue games was total awesomesauce though. Still the best example of a game within a game as they were used to add an authentic retro vibe to the game world's arcade.

Worst example of a game within a game has to be the videogames inside GTA: San Andreas. What was it called, space camel or something? The idea of having a console you could play in your safehouse was brilliant. Until you actually played the fake retro games they included. Absolutely zero entertainment value, worse than having nothing at all there. Still, at least there were whores to punch outside the safehouse.

I bought TMNT: Battle Nexus or whatever it was called for 11 bucks because of the original arcade game. Too bad you had to beat the main game in order to unlock it. 3 friends and I wasted an evening playing that shit game just to play the arcade game for the twenty minutes or whatever it took to complete it.

All this talk about Day of the Tentacle makes me long for it. I mastered all the endings for the NES version of Maniac Mansion, but really know nothing about the sequel other than the name. Those games need a Wii remake.

Blades of Steel (not really modern, but funner than most current gen hockey games) had Gradius boss fights in between periods

No more Heroes has a decently difficult Schmup mid game and upon beating

Mid game Marvel Ultimate Alliance had pitfall

Metroid Prime via aided by GBA connection unlocks the original metroid

Yeah, PS2 had just PoP 1 whereas the Xbox version had both of them (and damn good they were too).
