Panel and Event line up question

edited January 2009 in PAX Archive
Is it possible to get the panel/event line up, times, and room numbers before 2009 PAX opens? I remember I got there 2008 and wished I had planned what panel I would attend a few days ahead of time.

Is there a web page that will have that data?

All of those details are released usually within a month or so of the time PAX takes place, so you're going to have to wait a while. :P

It takes time for them to figure out what kind of panels are even taking place, let alone time and location, but you will get the details before PAX so don't worry about that.

even if you did have everything planned out before you got there... that's not how things are going to work out for you in the slightest bit. and if you show up early on friday you can get a book that has everything and then you can read that and plan out while you're wating in line instead of drawing penis' on pictochat... because well... we all do that

I think it was a couple weeks before the event that a PDF of the times and rooms was posted on the pennyarcadeexpo.com site. I printed (and bound) copies to hand out to my crew. They made great scratch paper. You can plan ahead to some extent, but be prepared for changes and to possibly abandon ship completely.

If memory serves me, last year the official event schedule was released at 4:30 pm Pacific on 8/9/08. 3 weeks before the event that time.

Planning your PAX amounts to failure.

I ended up going to too many panels... Next year i'm forcing myself to only choose a few. Which is going to suck.

It's hard not to feel like you missed out on something. I can't believe I didn't play any Kickle's Cubicle at PAX 08, I barely did any tabletop, and I missed some of the few panels I decided I wanted to attend. But last years PAX was still one of the best weekends of my life.

No way! If you don't at least half-plan you miss so many awesome things.

I plan every year, then promptly do absolutely nothing I planned.

Yet I still have the greatest time EVER. Weird.

I had last year planned out to the letter, then forgot about it, with exception to a few things. Although it wasn't like I planned to go to those things, so I did. It was more like, I planned to go, forgot about it in the bustle of awesome, then ended up there by accident.

I had mine planned out and entered into my PDA's dayplanner along with a copy of the PAX map (whoever made that for blackberry, kudos!) with all the different stuff I wanted to do, and stuck to... most of it. There were a number of cases where panels were full or events were delayed/cancelled and I wound up playing board games, futzing around on my laptop, touring the exhibit hall, or enjoying some freeplay.

I would schedule as much as you can, but don't worry or get all in a huff if you miss some things, because there's plenty of alternatives at any given time, and they're all a great deal of fun.

I regret not getting to all of the panels I wanted to. The Podcast one was a big problem for me as I was post-producing and uploading my show as it was running. Great planning on my part eh?

Still, at least I can cross off 1Up Yours this year, I'm sad to say :(

I really wanted to go to that podcast one too. But there were ALOT of panels that I wanted to go to. I ended up going to a grand total of 3 panels and the keynote. Though, I got to see the ending of the 1Up Yours live panel, only because of the Dawn of War 2 panel that was right after.

Plan for a bunch of things, but just pick two or three that you REALLY want to go to

I missed at the least half of what I planned, but made up for it with impromptu parties and meetups. In the end I think I was the better for it.

Aye, I missed all sorts of meet-ups too. =( It was all just way more compacted than I realized it would be.

For some reason, I had this idea in my mind that at some point we were all going to go out drinking, for example... but when I went to Triwizards, it was utter insane chaos. I think I ran into Astayonix for like 5 seconds and that was it, I didn't recognize anyone else until after it was all over.

The problem with America is stupidity. I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Aye, that was the biggest problem. If everyone had a giant T-Shirt with their avatar on it I'd recognize most everyone... but man, the need for sudden name/face recognition for an old name on a new face (aka real life face instead of avatar) beat me up pretty badly =)

Speaking of which, I think T-Shirts with peoples avatars are in order this year. =) lol

    Ah, true! =)

Didn't we try to do that last year or something? I vaguely remember someone (no clue who) suggesting to wear our own buttons on our shoulders; one on each side. But with a bajillion folks around and bags (or the awesome Cookie Brigade box thingie VT had) around our shoulders, it was difficult. I guess a more prominent area?

Aye. I'm almost inclined to say that we should consider having... I don't know, maybe some sort of voluntary "wear a hat, and then only put your button(s) on the hat" or something like that.

Ooh! Or what if we made like "My name is..." cards, and in the blank space we put our button on it and then put that somewhere on our person? Just to make it stand out from the other buttons, as it'd have that "my name is" border around it that would be noticeable.
