I, for one, enjoy watching cartoons written for Japanese children. I am not ashamed of this fact. This doesn't mean I volunteer such information, of course - my power level is kept thoroughly suppressed.
    Words to live by.

Here we talk about Japanese animation and related topics. Mostly, we discuss new anime and manga from the motherland, glorious Nippon! However, if you want to discuss old episodes of Starblazers, or show off your (worksafe) pvc figurine collection, or have a laugh at silly Japanese snack foods, that's cool, too.

    FAQ:

Q: How do you guys get your anime?
A: Great question! There are several free, legal online services you can use these days. Hulu, Crunchyroll, Anime News Network, and possibly other sites all have free streaming anime you can watch. Other methods tend to be verboten or referred to in an oblique manner, as the rules of the site are strictly anti-piracy.

Oh, and sometimes we buy DVDs.

Q: I played this hentai game, let me tell you all about it.
A: I believe hentai (aka porn) games and videos are against the site rules. Apparently we can discuss our wangs at length, but discussion of wang-shaped tentacles raping young women is over the line. Also, discussion of h-games shades into video game piracy again.

Q: There's an annoying poster here, what can I do about him?
A: The forum has a little-known ignore feature! Just click "View Public Profile" under the user's handle, then the "Add [user] to Your Ignore List" link. You can only ignore 3 posters at a time, however, so choose wisely.

    Q: What is "moontube"?
A: "Moontube" is another name for Nico Nico Douga, a Japanese streaming video site. It is the spawning grounds for anime memes. www.nicovideo.jp is the main site, and there are Chinese, Spanish, and German versions of the site. Sorry, English speakers! Unlike youtube, nicovideo requires an account to view content.

Guide to setting up a moontube account follows, courtesy of anon:

Whisper of the Heart is fantastic. Haven't seen Girl Who Lept Through Time yet, but I hear good things. You really can't go wrong.

If you want a change of pace series, I highly recommend ef - a tale of memories. Posted about it several times in the last thread if you want my impressions. Just don't click the spoilers.

    Pika let's talk about this.

reposted from a while back, School Days spoilers:
The whole show is A Trap. Itou starts off pretty similar to a lot of weak-willed spineless anime main characters. You know, just like me . Immediately I begin to empathize with him. The first episode involves a rather standard fare: He has a crush on a girl but neither the willingness nor the raw guts to do what needs to be done. So I'm caught immediately. I empathize with him totally already: "Go on, good son." I say. "Do what you can."

Katsura is absolutely adorable. She's cute and earnest and shy and absolutely needs to be defended. Itou's crush on her is equally adorable. Silently, earnestly, they fall in love with each other without even talking. Absolutely beautiful. A relationship not realized in gestures or words or embraces, but merely in shy glances across a train. What, I think, is not to love?

Enter: Sekai. Immediately I don't really like her, there's a feeling about her of borderline insanity and busybody-ness that, by the time it goes away, has left me with a sour taste in my mouth. Of course, she has her reasons too, events were set in motion by Itou's almost unnatural attractiveness to women long before the anime began. She began, as they say, to covet the flower that she wanted to give to another.

Sekai's busybody nature is essentially self-destructive, since she attempts to deny her feelings for Makoto in an eventually fatal effort to hook him up with Katsura. Her resounding success in this regard was almost comical for me, it seemed like a happy ending after only one episode.

Would that I had only watched that one episode.

I knew that the show would end in violence, but I didn't know how. It was that promise of violence that kept me watching, even though the toughest parts. But the lightheartedness at the beginning was so gosh darn unnatural that the thought of what was to come freaked me out.

So the next couple of episodes are Makoto's awkward first dates with Katsura, ha ha that guy sure is bad with women. If only that were true. The warning signs are appearing early, but I didn't notice them. He's a fucking teenager, his obsession with the tactile obvious, and he's making boy-scared Katsura confused.

If only that were the problem. The problem is: He can't get enough. He starts cheating on her with Sekai. His initial love totally overrun by physical attraction.

And that's the trap, ladies and gentlemen. Because that's just the beginning. His earnest love for Katsura never fully extinguished, he refuses to break up with her, unfortunately he began cheating on her just as she realized how much she loves him. Abandoned, alone, confused, he absolutely and utterly emotionally crushes his crush. Ha ha. I make a pun. By the time he does break up with her, sometime in like the NINTH EPISODE JESUS, she's so far gone in love with him that she refuses to accept it. She loses her mind. He drove her to insanity and later murder.

But that's not enough people destroying for him. He cheats on Sekai with a Jr. High girl, and thus begins his long string of emotionless hookups. At first I held onto my empathy with a slightly retarded diligence. "Poor confused Makoto." I said, refusing to see the truth. "He's just being cockblocked and because he's a dumb teenager he can't see the solution."

But it was obvious by the time he fucked Setsuna that he was in too deep.

He has reasons for choosing Sekai or Katsura. I don't blame him for not wanting to anger one or the other. But he's so weak-willed. So spineless. His ambition (not being content with what he had), his power (his ability to lay any girl he chooses, apparently), and his confusion are a dangerous cocktail of life destroying. If he had chosen one quickly, everything would have been avoided. Instead he drives gentle Katsura to insanity, practically rapes stoic Setsuna, and turns light-hearted, fun, busybody Sekai into the most dangerous thing of all: A woman scorned.

and in the end they kill him and the girl who killed him. A revolting bloodbath. Katsura wins I guess, because she survives. No, Setsuna wins, I guess, because she got away. Who am I kidding? The only winners here are the background characters that never get involved in this whole shitstorm.

The murder is the last trap too, because even after all that, I'm not sure he deserved it. Emotionally unsatisfying, mentally draining, and physically disgusting. Avoid at all costs.

Not too long ago I was that kind of guy who'd watch girls on trains and fall in love with them that way, never saying a word. Since I'm pretty young, I'm also scared of the apparent power of sexuality. But I built confidence and matured a bit since then. School Days did a good job of tearing that down. Still, I see what they were trying to do, after all, and respect them for that.

    Sick fucking show, though.

So you understand why I hate School Days now?

So you understand why I hate School Days now?

About your reasons (i read half way through)

    school days series
the trap is WHY I liked it. again it was refreshing to me to see something like that. imagine a gi joe show with cobra winning. it's like that to me. I can completely understand why, to you, that you hated the trap. that's a perfectly valid opinion.

and my whole view on spoilers I can apply to you. you heard of this "violent thing" happening, and you waited for it. I feel that ruined your experience. stuff like that.

as to why i'm pissed at eeryone trying to get page- to hate it (more school days spoilers)
1- you're telling him what episodes to watch. the whole thing with how i want to watch things "as is" so i don't get spoiled. telling him to watch only the first three, or only the last, or whatever, that will ruin the expierience for him.

2- again with what episodes to watch. as I mentioned before, I liked the show because of it being "a trap." if he watches only x episodes, then he won't be lulled into the trap.

3- you're all warning him of the trap. again blah blah how i hate spoilers you're ruining it for him, so he'll probably hate it because he won't get trapped.

4- I liked the trap. i liked their stupidity. i liked what happened because of it. you all hated that. page- might be like me and enjoy what happens. he might be like you guys and hate it. I'd rather he watched it and found out on his own.

5-greeper don't hate it (at least last thread gave this vibe). he hates what happened, but i never got the vibe that he didn't hate the show itself. it's like watching jackass and seeing someone get kicked in the balls. you hate the kicking in the balls, and you cringed for a week, but that doesn't mean the show itself is horrible. he's just trying to save him from cringing for a week at what happens.

to page, since everything is in spoilers

You guys make the ignore function completely worthless.

Anyway, I wanted to watch/read something with some adventure in it and One Piece always came highly recommended in comparison to the other big shounen works (I read the manga because I'll be damned to sit through that many episodes). I usually hate shounen manga and all the needless exposition and power creep but One Piece won me over with it's charm and whimsy, although I skimmed through most of the fights. The exaggerated and ridiculous character designs make me laugh every time and the emphasis on camaraderie is honestly emotional. I loved the Skypeia arc the most.

I saw a few clips on the One Piece anime and I don't like it much. It seems slower and less hectic and I don't laugh at the jokes. So, yeah. One Piece is just great fun and I'm sorry I've been missing out till now.

Yay Skypeia love! I also think that it was appropriate that Enel was insane and wanted to go to the moon, because if he wasn't the cocky son-of-a-bitch that we all know and love and resided as a pirate on the Grand Line, the Marines would have a serious threat on their hands. Not only did Oda say that his bounty would be at least half a billion fucking beli, but he could actually rule a good majority with an iron fist. This i'm certain of, and i'd be more than willing to debate this all night.

As for the humor not being delivered well enough in the anime, I present exibit A:

This joke works far better in the show than the comic, but then again the reverse is true for the manga.

Also this video cracks me up every time:

    EDIT:
    Godfather I love you.

Edit: Bad Kitty, what's the name of the webcomic your avatar is from? I used to read it all the time but can't remember it's name.

    Gunnerkrigg Court.

So, is anybody watching Michiko and Hatchin? I've only seen a few episodes so far, but I love the animation in it so far. Hoping it doesn't crap out half way through.

Gunnerkrigg Court. I'm really happy it's getting the recognition it deserves. The recent arcs have been fantastic.

Wait, people actually disliked the Skypeia arc? I love floating islands and thought the entire setting and story were utterly fantastic and it was just fun to read through. I understand that it doesn't further the main quest at all but it was a proper adventure from start to finish. Also there was less of an emphasis on fighting, so maybe that's why I enjoyed it so much.
