This is an interest thread in a mod called Sahrani Life.
Sahrani Life is a FPSRPG. To explain what goes on in it I need to explain the game it's based on.
To play Sahrani Life you need a copy of ARMA: Armed Assault.
ARMA is a tactical FPS focused on realistic infantry play. You move as fast as you actually would, take realistic damage, and must work in a team to survive. The game takes place on an island called Sahrani which is divided in two, a North and South.
In the game story you are a post stabilization operations army grunt, one of the few left on the island after the U.S. is pulling its troops out. The world is a mix of Soviet Union/Bannana Republic/Central America. All hell breaks loose with the North invading the South. You are, of course, in the southern country. After you kick the hell out of the North and whack the bad guy leader the story of Sahrani Life begins.
In the North the city of Bagango sits, and this is where the game centers.
The game exactly?
You can play as a civilian or a cop. Civies have to earn money, cops get paid.
Civies can:
Buy factories, go to work, buy a home, vote for a mayor and the mayor can change the laws.
They can also make illegal guns/drugs and run/sell them.
They can join a terrorist network and undermine the state.
Go fishing. Or whaling.
Buy cars/planes/helicopters and use them for legal/none legal purposes.
Anything they want too.
Cops can:
Search and seize anyone if the item is illegal. Civilians must have a license to drive a car or own a gun.
Fire if fired upon.
Give tickets for illegal behavior or jail people if they break the law. (Yes you go to jail. You stay there. Minor crimes are 1 minute, major (and you being a douche helps) 20)
Place wanted bounties on players who may then be arrested/killed by civies who are licensed bounty hunters.
Must act like real police would. They can't declare martial law and can't abuse power. Police must pay up to 20000 dollars for a non justified shooting, and repair any damage they inflict if it is not warranted.
Police cannot arrest or ticket you unless they have proof of wrong doing. This depends on whats going on, if you get caught for speeding the cop just needs to say you were speeding, busting your for drugs, the cop better find some drugs.
So bottom line:
The game is a real world simulator. If your car breaks down in bum fuck nowhere you're walking. Buy a repair kit.
The civies can do whatever they want. If you die you lose your stuff. Legally or illegally you want to make money and not die.
The police must police the area and try to maintain order.
This doesn't always work out:

The array of vehicles and equipment is staggering. As a cop you can outfit yourself to be a Bannana Republic Officer, Duke of Hazard dude, or Euro cop, complete with Fiat.
How does the game actually play out?
First off, this is an RPG. You are expected to read the server rules, and general asshatery is a fast ban (exploits, harassment, yadda, yadda...) Play it straight up, either as an upstanding civilian or a homacidal maniac and your good.
If you die then all is forgiven. You can't go after someone for something they did before they died.
All that in mind the game plays out like real life in attitudes and actions. The words were different, but the arguments I've heard in game are spot on to what I've heard working on the ambulance. (And by that I mean there's a lot of denyal of obvious guilt to police officers by the soon to be arrested. General game play reminds me of these forums alot actually.
Another note. You can rob the bank. This takes up to 20% of ALL PLAYERS in the games money. Robbing the bank and then disconnecting is no smiled upon. K?
k.
Ok. So you want to try it? Sure, I was skeptical too and just loaded it up because I was bored. But man I'm waiting every day to hit the server.
So.
Get the mod here:

Remember you have to run the mod, not ARMA. (And get that too, it's 'heavy' so take some time to get familiar with standard moving around.) PATCH IT ALL THE WAY TO BETA.
Remember to start as a civie! Not a cop! You will screw up and get banned! Read the server rules before you join!
To join, just go multiplayer and sort by population. The first server you see running Sahrani Life is the one. Be patient with the service, ARMA matching is not great by any means but it will work eventually.
[EDIT]
Better explain the title:
To say this game is multi national is to say the sun is rather warm. Americans are normally the minority there so be prepared to interpret accents and a lot of Russian.

Gaming and Non-Gaming 2009 Resolutions
Actually the reason I'm advertising the game is because it does not have a good community. We need good players, not whiny crybabies.
If the server population is low and the cops are at about a 1 to 3 ratio to civies then normally everyone plays nice. As the server pop rises the rate of douchbaggery climbs astronomically. It's easy for someone to go cop who doesn't know, or doesn't care what they are doing and then piss off a few very well armed civies. Protracted blood baths then ensue with the cops teaming up into big kill blobs and shooting on site.
ARMA is not a twitch game and it takes time to line up a sight in a gun. It takes time to unholster the gun even and since cops are expected to have their weapons holstered if not in use it's very easy for cops to get killed.
For instance, yesterday I was doing fuel missions where you take a truck, pick up gas and then move it to several locations around the map. I was stopped at a road block by two cops. I was given a clear, and as I started to pull out a car from the opposite direction crested the hill and a sniper popped out. The cops were looking at me, not him and both hit the ground without ever turning around.
So the situation can be very tense. You have these police who are seen to have all this power to abuse and they quickly become targets of players frustration, earned or otherwise. The police see themselves as very restricted and as basically targets in a shooting range from any schmuck with a gun. It only takes one griefer running around with a gun to turn the server into quake deathmatch.
For my part I play it straight up. As a civie I don't even have a gun license and just work on getting a business going. If the violence level gets to where I can't safely get around it I just log. As a cop I play it straight and so far it is paying off. I've never shot anyone and am getting to be known as a good player which encourages the civies to play nice with me. My hope is that we get enough straight up players in there and we'll encourage the others to play nice.
Finally ARMA is pretty old, you don't need a new PC to run it, nor a good graphics card. Lighting and particale effects are minimum and the game is optimized for a large world. Yes, everything is destructible but it's also pretty sparse when you get outside of the cities.

Did I mention the frequent roadside bombings?

I've heard good things about ArmA itself, so I guess I'll grab it and give it a shot. Wish I had bought ArmA during the end of year sale like I was thinking about now. :P
The Sahrani Life server I play on is 1.6 I don't play on the RELOADED servers, from what I'm aware of the 1.6 server is the one actively being developed and supported.

I think it was only 10 or 15 during the sale though. But oh well, only $5 or so difference. :P
Will be done downloading later tonight/this morning, will probably play some time tommorrow.
Robbing the bank sounds like it could be fascinating. I'm having delightful visions of working for days to come up with an awesome plan, buying all the equipment and vehicles we need, rushing in and doing the job, then making a break for the airport and flying away into the sunset in our getaway bird.
There are a lot of great mods for ARMA. The most popular being Evolution where the entire island except the airport in S.S. is under enemy A.I. Are you a bad enough dude to team up with 40 or so guys and retake the island?
There is a lot I should say in warning because this is Eastern European game company game... Such as the light changes are sudden and very bright. The change from day to dusk is sudden and so on. Nothing is very self explanitory and there are enough control quirks to drive anyone insane.
For instance let me explain vehicle controls under A.I. you can have a squad member drive a car and he'll drive it where you want.
In Sahrani Life these are called slaves, you can buy them and have them follow you around, or drive cars for you. The A.I. is shaky but if you have patience you'll be ok. If you take these slave/workers and go to a workplace you get extra money for being a 'boss' and 'overseeing' their work.
So basic vehicle controls. These work across all vehicles and assume the A.I. is driving, and you are commanding.
WASD = W Forward, WW, Forward Fast as you can.
A = LEft, S = Right, D = Stop/Backwards
Holding SPACE and clicking somewhere on the map (M) or on the landscape will tell the A.I. to drive there.
If you are in a tank, ALT-LClick tells the gunner to watch the area you clicked. Note that is a specific location, not direction.
F changes weapon rounds / type for the gunner to use.
SPACE + LCLICK on an enemy tells the gunner to engage. He'll use the weapon selected so make sure you have the right one selected or else he'll engage the Abrams with the MG. RCLICK also targets enemies.
YES THE A.I. CAN FLY VEHICLES. YES THIS IS A BAD IDEA.
KEYPAD ENTER goes to 3rd person, KEYPAD ENTER PERIOD goes to extended 3rd person where you have free mouse control and is the easiest to command tanks from.
ARMA has a way to allow you to try vehicles, called the Armory. You play with whatever you select and you get mini missions to try out. Do well on the missions and you can unlock new vehicles to play with. This is the best way to get familiar with how everything works before jumping into multiplayer.

So I was doing the training in ArmA, got my usual expert marksman in m16, SAW, and Pistol, and didn't hit shit with grenades. Move on to the sniper training and somehow fail some safety procedure by reloading the rifle when he tells me too.
Wanted me to start completly over. Bah.
Anyway downloading the mod now.

Not a good first impression.
The wang factor is high.
Give it an hour and try again. I'm off to bed. I'll be on again from around 2 a.m. to 6 a.m. EST if you have questions.

I already lost 2k on the retarded drivers license test. They started me in a fenced in area, and expected me to find a road, and travel to another city in like 160 seconds. It took me 70 seconds just to find the goddamn road to get to the next city.

Game sounds like an awesome social experiment.
IIRC it's like $20 on Steam and 20 euros(I don't feel like looking up the alt code) on the website.

And while someone unfortunetily hasn't, there is the next best thing in the form of several zombie mods and such. I am so sold on this now.
I now see this game in an entirely new light. The potential is strong with this one.

Even in just ARMA itself, because tactical games are usually pretty fun for me, but this mod also sounds pretty fun. If really, really hard, since it sounds like violence happens kiiiinda often.
Ugh, looks like the download will not complete before I have to go to work. Hopefully someone from here will be on when I get back.
