I Hate "Twilight" So Very Much

edit: Please refer to page 65 for why I posted this

I would like to apologize ahead of time because this is a bit of a rant.

I hate the book series “Twilight”. With a passion. I hate it for two reason.

The first one is what the series has done to vampires. Hundreds of years of mythology, books, and classic movies, such as Nosferatu and Dracula, established vampires as evil. They are undead monsters raised by a foul ritual, cursed forever to drink the blood of the living, to never be able to see the day again, and rest in some fashion with the earth of their grave. They are soulless abominations that must be hunted down and destroyed, for they are a blight upon life itself. With just one book series, that has been completely been ruined. Vampires are now romantic, faggoty-ass, misunderstood creatures that are the incarnation of every girl’s dream and should be idolized. And they glitter. THEY GLITTER?!?! WTF? The very idea of what a vampire is has been completely destroyed with one book series.

Which leads to my second reason why I hate “Twilight”. For the past two evenings I have had dinner with a friend of mine and her roommate. Care to guess what they talked about? If you guessed “Twilight”, you are only half correct. Specifically, they talked about how wonderful Edward Cullens is. I have not lived very long, only 21 years, but I have never seen such an obsession over an obviously fictional character. And this has spread to what girls expect out of guys. Almost every girl that has read “Twilight” expects guys to be perfect like Edward Cullens. My friend’s roommate actually said that every guy should read “Twilight” and take notes from Edward Cullens. I might actually do that, if it wasn’t for the fact that all girls would expect you to be NEARLY EXACTLY like Edward Cullens. It is impossible to meet the expectations set by a fictional character designed to be perfect, as no one is perfect. Another example of this obsession is that last night or so, I updated my Facebook status to say something to the effect, “It’s fucking cold outside”. Cussing is my one bad habit, however I have never cussed around these girls. True, I have used the word “fuck” in my status before, but that was before they had read “Twilight”. Next thing I now I get comments from them saying Edward Cullens would never cuss, that I should read Twilight, and I should ask “What would Edward Cullens do”.

Why is this such an obsession? My mother substitute teaches at a middle school, and every single girl she sees carries a copy of Twilight. Even girls that I know that are geeks such as myself, into video games and Dungeons and Dragon, obsesses over these books and Edward Cullens. I cannot think of anything that has made my so angry, that I have hated so much. ARGHHH!!!

At some point in my life (I don't remember when) I realized that it's not worth getting upset over mass appreciation for lame, shitty things.

Reality TV, boy bands, bad stand-up comedy, whatever. Trying to convince 200 million people that what they like is no good is like trying to put out a forest fire with a watering can. Just step aside and feel silently superior and your life will be a lot less stressful.

also I actually liked the movie a little bit

the bad parts were hilarious and the Cullen family were actually flawed enough to be interesting

although I hear that everything I liked about the movie is different in the book

I guess Stephanie Meyer is the biggest enemy of Twilight

Well I mean fiction is often a vehicle for things that are more important than just silly stories. But I guess in this case, we're probably talking about people who wouldn't pick up on those things anyway.

Edward is a creepy, controlling douchebag.

Also, the Twilight books are all incredibly thinly-veiled propaganda for Mormonism.

And the guy didn't even like playing the role in the movie.
"When you read the book," says Pattinson, looking appropriately pallid and interesting even without makeup, "it's like, 'Edward Cullen was so beautiful I creamed myself.' I mean, every line is like that. He's the most ridiculous person who's so amazing at everything. I think a lot of actors tried to play that aspect. I just couldn't do that. And the more I read the script, the more I hated this guy, so that's how I played him, as a manic-depressive who hates himself. Plus, he's a 108-year-old virgin so he's obviously got some issues there. When I read it ... I was convinced that Stephenie was convinced that she was Bella, and ... it was like it was a book that wasn't supposed to be published, like reading her — her sort of sexual fantasy about some — especially when she says that it was based on a dream, and it's like, "Oh, then I had a dream about this really sexy guy" and she just writes this book about it, and there's some things about Edward that are just so specific that ... I was just convinced that this woman is mad, she's completely mad, and she's in love with her own fictional creation. And I sometimes ... feel uncomfortable reading this thing, and I think a lot of people feel the same way, that it's kind of voyeuristic ... It creates this sick pleasure in a lot of ways."

-- Robert Pattinson in a recent interview with E!Online.
