The end of the first month of the year goes out with ... well at least 1 good game for certain.

The USA finally gets the newest edition of the excellent music/rhythm game DJ Max Fever for PSP. I know a lot of people have been looking forward to this, so check it out.

Also, Afro Samurai is out this week for the HD systems. I know almost nothing about it except that it's been hyped by Spike TV and Gametrailers.com. It involves a samurai with an afro, that's all I know.

The HD systems also get an MLB Office Manager.
A lot of people are fans of Football (ie soccer) Manager games. Usually these are niche titles released for the PC and on rare occasions the PS2. I think the HD consoles have seen another Manager game before but I don't remember. Anyway, this is 2K Sport's attempt at the genre for the PC, PS3, and 360. Although, I find it somewhat interesting that these high-end systems are getting these games, while the PS2, Wii, and hell handhelds are not, because sports management games rarely involve graphics/audio or anything else that requires extensive technical power. These games have traditionally been almost entirely HUD-based experiences. But anyway, I don't know much about this new one from 2K.

Next up is the "wii-make" of Rygar for the Wii. It's a slightly remixed remake of the original PS2 game. Fortunately, the original game was a rather pretty affair, and is considered by many to be "God of War before there was God of War." Some complained of the original's repetitiveness and too-few enemies, so the developer tried to add at least a little more variety into this new game. The original is also cited for having an amazing soundtrack. That's all I know.

Nobunaga's Ambition: Iron Triangle is also out for the PS2 this week.

Finally I should mention that if you couldn't find Ultimate Shooting Collection last week for Wii, that may be because it shipped friday and wasn't put on shelves until this week, possibly. Unless its release date got jacked up again.

    Coraline, eh?

Neil Gaiman is good people, and has done will in other media (beyond writing) in the past, so that is worth a strong look at the least. How involved was he in the game development, though?

Whoa, what is this Coraline thing? It's not some movie license crap, is it?

EDIT: Oh, it is...at least, it is a movie license.

It was originally a children's novella, then a graphic novel, then a movie, now the game. At least, I think that was the sequence.

I tried looking up info on it (the coraline game), but there aren't any reviews (to my knowledge), and I can't find previews. What little info there is from various retailers is that it's a game in which you move around these 2 worlds and interact with characters, solving puzzles, and playing mini-games. Haven't found any info that differentiates the 3 versions that are coming out this week (PS2, Wii, and NDS), except that the NDS version will in certain instances require use of the touch screen and microphone.

    From his blog:
I saw an early proposal for the game, which looked intriguing, but that was the last thing I heard or saw. If and when I get more I'll happily post about it on the blog.

Soooo...not very. (He's only mentioned it a couple of times and it's been along the same lines.)

I'm definitely going to get DJ MAX Fever. I've wanted to import the two main games and this gives me a reason not to. I love Korean music.

Rygar was awesome on the PS2 - and now I don't have it since the friend I lent it to lost it (and I guarantee everybody on these forums has a similar tale).

Part of me wants to get it on the Wii, but the other part just wants the damn thing back for the PS2 in the first place.

I'm in the opposite boat: I imported DJMP2 and loved it, and I'm kind of curious about Max Fever but the fact that it has a good chunk of songs from the one I already own makes it kind of worthless; I'd rather put the money toward importing DJMP1, but honestly I don't have the money for either at this point. :(

There is no way it's as good as the original though.

I'm going to wait for reviews on Afro Samurai, but from the previews I'm cautiously optimistic. It looks like a really hectic fun beat (chop?) 'em up. The main area I can see it failing in is the platforming elements, but we'll see.

Yeah Afro looks like a 7/10 title - but occasionally those end up being your favorite games of a generation, so it's worth giving it a taste.

I think The Chase is worth a closer look. Despite the horrible box art, it's pretty much the opposite of shovelware - you can see the love of video games that went into making it. Yay for fun looking original IP games.

I've been looking forward to it since I saw the first video.

Well I just want it because it has a chunk of songs from DJMP 1 and 2 and I never imported those. I'm actually suprised that Pentavision localized this.

Rygar was okay, but I really can't see any reason why you'd want to play it over pretty much any other action adventure released since, even if you'd be playing Rygar for the first time and replayig Ninja Gaiden or God of War or whatever.

The genre's moved on and improved in big, fundamental ways. Plus, I really don't see it benefiting from waggle. At all.

    Edit: from the IGN review:
The controls have been mucked up a bit in the transition from the PS2. Jumping has been relegated to the Z button on your nunchuk, which feels awkward and makes tricky platforming sections more difficult than they should be. Rygar does not allow us to alter his control scheme. In the regular game waggle controls have mercifully been kept to a minimum.

So, I'm still in "wait for RE5" mode personally.
