English dubs are 99% of the time complete shit. They really made an effort for some things like Howl's Moving Castle which had Christian Bale and Lauren Bacall but it also had Billy Crystal and that ruins fucking everything.
It's usually just weird to hear an American voice from a (generally) white person for some Asian person I imagine is in Japan. It would probably be just as odd if Snow White spoke english with a thick Japanese accent.
I wanna watch this again with a more critical eye, but frankly watching Akira for the first time kind of killed anime for me.
It's like, this widely considered to be the best anime film ever made, or at least one of the greatest of all time, and yet I see the same fucking tropes that are present in so much anime of the era (Evangelion, anyone?)
Like, I'm sorry that the Japanese are obsessed with transcendental evolution but it just feels like pop philosophy to me.
I mean for all the shit Donnie Darko gets on this board watching Akira feels basically the same to me.
It's been a while since I've seen it though and it gets so much praise that I feel like I have to see it again with as much of an open and critical mind as I can but I wasn't really a fan the first time. Well, that's not quite fair. It was fun, and beautifully drawn but it wasn't great.
then as soon as Asuka starts going insane and the psychobabble gets turned up into 11 it's just bleeehhhhhhh
basically the series quality is directly proportional to how not-crazy Asuka acts
Watching Eva was so much fun for me at first
I overlooked a lot of pacing problems in favor of what I felt were really interesting feminist and anti-religious themes with awesome, recurring imagery and cohesive symbolism, and then I saw the last two episodes and realized that yet again I had wasted my time giving an anime the benefit of the doubt that it could do something interesting and maybe even literary.
And then I saw Akira right after and I was like "OK fuck this I'm done."
I actually have much more patience these days for things like One Piece that are silly, superficial, bubbly fun, with characters you love despite their one-dimensionality. I'm sick of anime with pretense that it doesn't deserve.
it wasn't as conclusive as any good ending would have been but the first half cleared up a lot and the Asuka on a gazillion Eva's fight was fucking great

the others are just movies with a dude named Lupin who looks just like him
Do you really hate reading subtitles? Watch the dub.
Do you think subs are pretty okay and have no issue? Watch the sub.

Though maybe Howl could have spent a little more time in that crazy outfit he had earlier in the movie. That thing was motherfuckin' p.i.m.p.

When you have the host of Toonami doing the voice of the main character, you know it's good.
