I've been working almost exclusively at the company I'm at now for almost 3 years now. It's great, but I don't want to fall into a comfort zone when it comes to colors and design, which is what I think has happened to me.
I wanted to shake off the Medicare from my design, so I decided to make a layout for a page using graphics and colors I don't get to use on my day to day design. If I like it, I'll turn it into a real page for myself. Though for the moment I want horrible, soul crushing critiques.
The blank space on the left will have a menu on top of the box template, and the box template will have its opacity toned down considerably.
Hey guys, I've been spying on this forums for years... never managed to post anything. I figured today's a good of a day as any. Here's a portrait of a Warhammer Librarian I whipped together this morning.
ditch the bloom or lens flare like effect or whatever that is in the corner. Its distracting. The portrait is pretty decent, but nothing about it really says Warhammer Librarian. You need an ocular implant, sterner expression or something.
The scar also just looks like a thin black slice towards the bottom. Try to keep the scar looking like it does at the top - no black, a bit wider, and a darker version of the skin tone.

It's more of an interpretation of a librarian not a literal representation, but I definitely think that the expression might need to look more aggressive. I can also see what you mean about the lens flare, it's really eating up the image.
I'm getting antsy waiting for the paint to get here (it's even worse because I can't remember what colors I had); transferred the pencils to the canvas, and then, having nothing else to do, decided to block in some really (and I mean really) rough colors, just to see if I could get something that worked.
Yes? No? Maybe? I'd have spend more time on it, but I'm not interested in getting carpal tunnel right now, though given my aforementioned antsiness, I'll probably end up working it out more anyway...
Sub does have a point, especially further away from the light source, there'd be more of a mix of it's own and reflected colors (depending on how smooth the water surface is), and I hadn't thought of that. I don't think I'll work it out on the mockup because it's hard enough laying down flats without worrying about surface textures or waves, but I do need to work out how I'll do it with the paints. So impatient...
EDIT: Oh, and indeed, guts of a whale. Hopefully that'll be clearer when I figure out the best way to draw the spine the ribs connect to, and put a texture on the innard walls (such a long to-do list...)
DOUBLE EDIT: Oh, and I'm thinking, based on the colors I've got there, that I'll need Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Viridian Green, and Ultramarine, at least for starters. I think the paints I'm getting include the Ultramarine, at least, and maybe the red and yellow.
Legg: I tried not to mess with the drawing too much because that's a whole different can of worms but- values.
You have waaaay too much contrast going on here. Most of your lights are pure white, and you have a heavy amount of pure black in there too. You have split the body up into the two main areas of light and shadow, which is good. but it is too extreme.
most of your information will fall into the mid-tones.
I did a quick paint over to help you out.
Step one: I took your darks out of the black range and into about a 70% grey
Step twp: I layed a quick multiply layer to bring you light values down to about a 50% or so.
Step three: start popping out your highlights (i did it quick and dirty, but you should put your time into it)
Sublimus. Thanks mate- I noticed the face had ALLOT of contrast in it after I put the detail in. I thought it would be ok once i put in higher contrast in the torso but yeah I get what you mean and where you are coming from. Im trying to kind of lay down lines and shadows with higher contrast to start with so I can learn where the shaddows and light falls before I adapt it.
Thanks for explaining what I need to do though I dont know what you mean in relation to the drawing http://www.characterdesigns.com/bandaid/content/photosets/1700/1734/Photoset_023_034.jpg That is the reference photo. Ive changed a few things because I was drawing in block shapes and then making it look like it, not identical but I dont think the shapes are to far off.
Lyrium - No.. I do beleive it is a tute from 'leggraphics' haha nah.. Im just trying to do some human form drawing from http://www.characterdesigns.com
It was posted earlier in relation to good human resource pictures Im just trying to do some of my own life drawing class sort of things. Start with action lines, then shapes then shade in the shapes and then kind of join them up into body parts. :S God sometimes I confuse myself. lol
Update : head looks a little detached but it shall be fixed with magic

Craw: I know it's way early and just an under-painting but I think you might want more global variation in value on that. Right now every thing's pretty much the same, and it doesn't guide the eye very well. Maybe it's just too early though. I would think darken to black as the hall fades off behind them and really push that torch.
Yeah, I was thinking the same thing throughout the underpainting, but to do that, I'd have to pile up the blue to practically impasto (since it's the oh-so-transparent ultramarine), or mix with black and/or white, both of which I'd learned not to do with underpaintings. By the end of it, I was basically just hoping for something recognizable to work off of when I get to the real paints. I'm still working out a gameplan for those...

That's a really intense blue for an underpainting. Why don't you wipe out the light areas so that you have more of an even distribution of value?
Alright, I trust your collective judgement (English really needs an equivalent of Uds./vosotros...); that and I had a spare bit of rag. Part of the reluctance is also that it's a bitch to get a decent picture of the thing; maybe someday I'll show you my setup, but yeah, I figure it's pointless to try to fiddle too much with the colors because this laptop monitor isn't exactly the paragon of color fidelity. We'll just hope they're vaguely similar
you do know that for a under-painting it is safe to use Turpentine? That was how I made my first ever underpainting portrait with the burnt sienna.
Edit: In other news. DOODLE DOODLE DOODLE DOODLE
I whent out and bought some conte charcoal pencils and started going out of my way to try and shade the figure during our sessions since my measuring speed has increased enough to finish before the pose is over, I had the pencil incorrectly shaved wrong apparently which made it look all none smooth and she taught me what to do for next timeeee
Woohoo this was the funnest experience ever, excited for rounddd two with drawing with charcoal :<
I just had to post this because its something Im working on for a larger project, but it looked too much like a zombie in its current state not to post.

This is what I have so far.

@NightDragon, thanks for pointing that out.

dosen't detract from what sub said, but yeah, it's looking nice so far crawdaddio, look forward to seeing it with some paints laid down

TE: And maybe titanium white.

Underpainting (also realized I'm going to need a smaller brush):
