This week Coraline opened at 16.7 million, with a production budget of 75million.
For comparison, Nightmare Before Christmas had a budget of 18 million.
Why the difference?
Coraline was filmed in a new 3d format (real d 3d) that uses polarized 3d glasses. These glasses aren't shuttered glasses but rather red and blue glasses where each frame is polarized. You get a smooth 3d effect from the film but to do it the film has to run at
140 frames per second. Although a standard projector can show the film it has to have special attachments.
Fuck all that though.
I had heard nothing of the movie before I wandered over to the movie theatre and the movie I intended to see wasn't showing. I saw the poster:
And what got me to see the movie was the tag line at the bottom (not on the one shown) which billed it as a
horror movie.
A horror movie for kids. [Rated PG]
Ok. Quick check on the iphone, nothing says it sucks. I fork over the money (my theatre wasn't showing it in 3d, but I didn't know about the 3d at all at the time) and go in.
Coming out of the theatre I immediatly bought the soundtrack in my car.
Go iphone.
It's been playing along with the World of Goo soundtrack for awhile now.
You'll notice that line in the poster about Nightmare Before Christmas?
Burton didn't lay a grubby paw on it, neither did Elfman (music). The music is french and the Nightmare Before Christmas is refrencing the director, also of (I'm sorry) Monkeybone and James and the Giant Peach.
Bottom line. YOU SHOULD SEE THIS MOVIE. It isn't for kids, though a kid can see it. It's very smart, doesn't talk down to anyone and isn't afraid to not explain things and let the audience fill in the gaps.
I'll talk a bit about the plot but only in real spoiler form.
If you loved Nightmare you owe yourself to see it. If you like terrific movies you owe yourself to see it. If you like stop animation you've already seen it.
Seriously the best way to see this is to go in with no expectations or foreknowledge. Just go dude.
Coraline is based on the book of the same name by Neil Gaiman.
I knew NOTHING about the movie/book going in. I don't watch many movies.
Coraline is a girl who just moved to a new apartment with her parents. The apartment is in an old Victorian house that has been divided up for the purpose. Upstairs lives a retired circus performer Mr. Bobinski and downstairs live two retired vaudevillian actresses. Her parents are writers under a big deadline and don't have time to pay attention to their very bored daughter.
Or cook something not of the disgusting eggplant and noodle variety.
Left to her own devices Coraline explores, meets a would be stalker/friend named Wybe (Why-Bee) and a small bricked up door.
The door leads to another dimension, where Coralines life is duplicated exactly with the twist that everything revolves around Coraline instead of bad food, deadlines, and creepy stalker kids. Very much an Alice in Wonderland approach here.
The music is odd, pure French and very appropriate. It takes a bit to get the movie going, but once it grabs you it doesn't let go at all. Plus as a bonus there's a They Might Be Giants song in there that was great. I've since read some reviews that apologized for there being musical numbers in the movie. Bullshit. It isn't a musical by far and the whopping TWO routines in the movie (one 30 seconds and the other 1:40) are part of the story. Not a musical number. I can say that nothing does young innocence feeling like French music. If you like Circe De Solie' you know what I'm talking about.
The visuals are at times mind blowing, and overwhelming. The garden scene in particular blew me away. The characters are warm and believable and I could go on and on. From the disgusting silverfish episode to the roasted chicken the details here are near epic proportion.
Stop motion animation is dying fast to computer animation. Movies like "9" and the like are here and for a fraction of the cost. While these movies are terrific and worth seeing, the feel of stop animation -like that of vinyl perhaps- is a distinct treat.
Go see the movie.
Now go talk about other great stop motion stuff. I'm partial to Pez's work myself.
I'm building a real pirate ship. Really. Wanna help?

Also, Coraline is gonna have an insanely long shelf-life, much as Nightmare did. No need for the death knell, dude.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Also you are forgeting that John Linell has an awesome song in this! That is worth the price of admission alone!
So did punctuation beat up your mom, or something?
'Cause damn. That is a pretty steadfast rebuking of it.
although I hold out some hope for this
and pooro I've been awake for all of five minutes I'll rebuke things as I please
I've been drunk for hours, and you don't see me lacking apostrophes.
For shame, sir. For shame.
some of us have standards
Coraline is like a million times better.
Ready to [sic] on those who irk me
It's like freakin' Auschwitz in here.
I was a little disappointed in The Corpse Bride but everyone around me seemed to love it. I mean it was alright but I still haven't purchased it or watched it since I saw it in theaters.
OH SNAP
Edit: Also, it should've been "werde ist der apostrophe," but whatever
And I thought it only got apostraphes when it was possessive.
That is exactly backwards.
It's = it is
Its = possessive
You're welcome to check my PA profile if you think I'm a plant. Or ask Captian K. Either or.
And don't worry I never come to this forum, after a quick search turned up nothing on it I figured I'd drop a note and leave it at that.
Have fun kids, back to G&T for me.
(OK fine but Corpse Bride had a 40million budget. You want to explain 35 million difference in that span of time? Never mind I 'm sure you do and I'm out of the thread anyway so knock yourself out.)

Everyone needs to walk the dinosaur at least once in their life.
Can I do both? At the same time?
Yes, in fact, I highly recommend both.
Secret Satan
How does one do the dinosaur? I checked videos on youtube but got sidetracked with Watchmen stuff.
