Oh! The Flameguard Cleansers. One of the only Combined Range spray attacks in the game, if I'm not mistaken.

No CRA on the spray. They have an order that functions similar to "The Devouring" and the ATGM's Order. They do explode when taking a back strike though, which means a Guardian can pick one up and huck it into the opposing line for a POW 14 AOE (I believe.)

How much of a chore is it to assemble the models, especially for a person who hasn't tried anything like this before?

Unless you play cryx, all infantry models are going to be 1-3 pieces. Some jacks can be a little fiddly to assemble (behemoth for Khador, and I believe the Thunderhead for Cygnar) and the Harbringer warcaster for Menoth sucks, but basically only 1 or 2 units per faction you're every going to have to actually think about when you assemble it.

    http://www.brushthralls.com/tutorials/index.php

That site should be able to walk you through assembly, painting, basing etc etc etc.

What's everyone's experience with Magnus' mercenary group? I really like the look of the mechs (especially the chainsaw one) and the rest of the merc mechs look really awesome.

I wouldn't be screwing myself in some fundamental way by not choosing one of the main factions and going with the Magnus starter set, would I?

Probably not, but you can always go here: Battlecollege

Read some more and figure out some info. I don't think starting with mercs will do any damage, but I don't know anyone at my LGS that plays them...

I've looked over pretty much all the WM factions at Battlecollege. I'm narrowing it down now between running either Khador or a merc squad.

Would it be feasible for me to put together some mock-ups to give the mechanics of this game a try? Any suggestions on where to start?

Is this question going to get me lynched? :P

Not at all. One thing you can do is go down to your friendly LGS and ask when game night is, and then ask if they have a message board or some one that enjoys helping new players.

Seek them out on game night and ask if they will teach you the game. Odds are some one will let you borrow a 350 point force to test the game out. If they don't you can take pieces of paper, write some names down and borrow cards from some one. Short of even that, you can (99% of the time stores don't have a problem with this) grab the rule book off the wall and use that as your reference.

If its just you and a friend looking into it, you can download the quickstart rules from the Privateer Press website, and if you need unit info, let me know via PM.

Edit: I officially smashed a 500 point Circle army today. He had all his tricks, and stuff, I had Doomshaper.

Basically he kept trying to open up an assassination attempt on doomie who was well screened and covered by a bouncer.
At one point I got the Bouncer within 9 inches of Kaya...It was time, the diretrolls where baying, the fell callers where singing their trollish anthems...I cast Rage on Doomshaper from the DTM nearby (had just slammed a Satyr down, and was moving in for the kill). I moved in the fell caller and hit Warcry on Doomshaper, I moved up the Krielstone (putting in in BtB with a Gorax [it would have instantly killed them]) and put up my +2 STR aura.

I activated the bouncer...and regenerated him once, confusing the circle player...why not move him away, or in to fight...he was to far out to charge, but...oh well.
    CASTLE!
Doomshaper jumps in front of the bouncer and charges Kaya, whomping her for a P+S 25! I rolled my 3d6 and got...15. My crushing 40 damage hit peeled through her armor instantly crushing her.

There where a few people watching and in that moment where I rolled 3 5's there was just as gasp of silence. No one had figured on that happening, no one saw a troll Doomshaper assassinating Kaya from a Castled charge.

I love trolls, I love doomshaper (previously I had saved my own ass in the game by cursing the satyr forcing him to stand still while my DTM slammed him into a Argus killing it), with a bouncer he is very hard to get to, and I see myself fielding a EBDT in the future for more ass kicking opportunity.

Crushing the Circle player that had won every game in the league with the most under rated warlock was the highlight of the weeks games (6 games, 4 wins, 2 losses)

I think everyone will now give doomie much more respect at my LGS, he was shutting down beasts and denying upkeeps the entire match. Whats more is the sudden "shock and awe" style of kill he pulled off.

Hell, during the first few turns I made a Gorax frenzy and bash apart his wolf unit, which is where the "uh...doomie doesn't suck huh man?" began.

Your best bet is to head over to a local store and see if they can give you a demo with painted minis and run by someone who knows the game well. If this is not a possibility, there are quick start rules for Warmachine available which give you the stats for two battleboxes. You can always cut out circles of the correct size and mount them on cardboard if you and a buddy want to give it a shot.

I think that's what I'm going to have to do, as I currently live in the middle of nowhere without a car. What are the base sizes?

Thanks for all the suggestions, everybody.

    Quickstart Rules

    Templates

Stat Cards for Cygnar and Menoth

    Base sizes are:

    Small - 30mm
    Medium - 40mm
    Large - 50mm

It should get you a nice intro. Battleboxes, additionally, are not that expensive for a wargame. $50 a pop MSRP means if you're good, you can pick them up on ebay for $30-ish or even less.

Magnus actually runs a pretty good army. Generally you're looking to assassinate your opponent's 'caster by lobbing huge POW 14s onto his or her head (from chainsaw dude, I forget his name.) I know a number of people who play a damn competitive Magnus list or two. Generally, it becomes easy to branch out as well (especially to Cygnar) because with all the merc models and your token Cygnar Trenchers or Longgunners you can swap stuff in and out of most any list, within reason and excepting Cryx.

Magnus's personal Mercenary Contract is nice for allowing you to use Trenchers OR Longunners -and- Idrian Skirmishers from Menoth. Really limited selection otherwise.

He's really awesome in the Four Star Syndicate, though. He has a bigger selection of dudes to hire.

Yeah, I'm waffling back and forth. There's some pretty cool looking solos in the Four Star that you don't get to use if you go Agenda.

The Magnus battlebox has been bought and I'm talking to the local gamestore owner about trying to get a WM/H group together.

Very little is going to stop you from using both Merc Contracts if you so desire over the course of your involvement with the game. It's one of the cool parts of playing mercenaries. I have pieces of my Searforge (Dwarven) army that I use in four-star lists, in Cygnar and even with my Circle from time to time.

You mean to say there's not one already together? That's tragic...

One way you can get things in motion is to start up a yahoo group, or messageboard of some kind and post a notice in the store for hordesmachine gamers.

It wasn't exactly falling for it. He just moved Kaya in an attempt to get an assassination lane, and happened to end in a bad spot. It wasn't like I tried to make it happen. Hell, I have never actively tried to kill a warlock myself. I spend my games destroying their army piece by piece, then end the warlock.

Umm, you do realise this is not a single player type game right? :P Unless you also get a friend into it and you're both willing to buy enough to make varied armies, you are going to have quite a dull time with it...

Unless you've decided on being the type of guy who plans and builds his army over a long course of time, only to journey to the LGS once every couple weeks/months to crush the fools who dare stand before you and leave nothing but questions of your identity and songs of your triumph behind! 8-)

Oh, I know. I'm moving back home from bumfuck-nowhere to 30-minutes-from-Seattle once school ends. I've been a strategy gamer all my life, but this'll be the first time I've had the chance to do the tabletop thing on an income higher than $70/month.

So I just bought some new toys...

Earthborn Dire Troll (eeeeeeeee! [like a little school girl])
    Farrow Bone Grinders
    Winter Troll

I hate the war store for not having a teleportation device. I am kind of nervous about the EBDT though, damn thing is huge and a total pain in the ass to paint (from what I hear). But it appears my 750 point army will be good to go once I get them. Next step is a unit of Long Riders, Mulg, eDoomshaper, and a unit of Fennblades. Sadly, none of which release till April/May (cept long riders). I have no idea what I would drop in favor of the Fennblades at the 750 level.

The Fennblades look absolutely sweet. POW 13 with Reach, on a cheap (for Trolls.) Every time I read their entry I can't help but see all the anti-cav as icing on the cake. Fennblades you don't really want to charge in the middle flanked by Champions on either side would be one hell of an annoyance.

Oooo, Kriel Warriors. Some of the best single wound infantry in Hordes. Do you plan on fielding them with eMadrak?

About Fennblades: They will hold a flank like nothing else in hordes. Not an assault unit by any means, but they are a defensive unit. I know I will have an entire unit of them, and probably field them in 750 as an auto-include.

Edit: Synergy that occurred to me:

    Fennblades and Chronicler
An ideal unit for all three chapters, they can benefit from concealment to help bump their meager DEF from 12 to 14 for the first round.
Their reach will help them benefit from charge of the trolls, especially if combined with a Bouncer, Impaler or Mulg.
Warm Reception combined with Parting Blow provides them with a win/win situation no matter if the enemy advances or charges them.

Yeah, I'm pretty pumped about the Kriels. I was planning on a Borka list, actually. Trying out the wave approach with kriels, champs, and long riders.

I noticed the Fennblades and Chronicler combination, too. I can't wait to field them with the kriels, and I might buy a min. unit of scattergunners to swamp the field with medium bases. I think there's alot of potential there. I love almost everything in Meta.

Of course, who knows what'll come out by the time Gencon rolls around?

So I just read through Metamorphosis.

Holy god Typhon is amazing. Pretty much unkillable, especially with Thagrosh. I'm already envisioning a mob of blighted ogrun Warmongers and Warspears led by War Chiefs, with Thagrosh guarded by a Nephilim Protector, and Typhon flinging enemies around to be consumed by a swarm of Shredders and Harriers.

    It is glorious.
