So i got a cheap tripod to go along with my cheap P&S and i've been messing with the manual settings a bit trying to get some good night-time pictures. Actually just putting it on S mode so I can mess with the shutter speed and let the camera do the rest of the work.
So the street lights are overly bright, probably because the exposure was 1 or 1.3 seconds i think. ISO was at 200. So, I ask, would I be able to get a better shot by reducing the shutter speed and widening the aperture (like would that prevent the street lights from showing up so bright?)? Should I bump up the ISO? I'd like to get a nice, non-grainy night-time shot which is why I didn't take the ISO up higher. Umm, yeah I guess I don't know what I'm doing so any advice you guys have would be great.
Are you shooting digital or film? ISO is the film speed, or the digital camera's imitation of film speed. ISO 200 is balanced for daylight, but yes, upping it will make the shot grainier.
Your camera has a light meter right? You want the aperture as wide as possible in low light situations, though this will lower your depth of field. The wider the aperture the less time you will have to have the shutter open for. However, you could use a smaller aperture and a longer shutter speed and get better results, you really just need to find a combination of the two that makes your light meter happy.

Yeah I concur. You know what I am finding kind of double edged abut OSX, though, as a new convert? I like being able to rename a file by highlighting it and pressing enter... but I don't like that highlighting it and pressing enter doesn't open it. :P
