We were very closely matched as well. I'm curious how the game might have ended if I hadn't given up a rook.

I find playing a endgame where you're ahead in material advantage but without an immediate win is stressful. You feel you should win, but there's always a chance of slipping and letting yourself get checkmated.

I think he means that white rook puts black in check, then black goes behind the pawn and white rook moves next to it for the checkmate. Black could have escaped it by going in front of the pawn or simply northwest of its original position.

I'm sorry, I don't speak chess. Can you put that into layman's terms?

Basically white has lost the game because black has 3 extra pawns, one of which is about to promote and the only way white can stop it is to give up her rook. White is about to resign, but decides to throw in a couple of checks first, and black responds by making the only move that can possibly lose the game, which is going behind the pawns. This leads to white checkmating black.

As for the chess notation: the rows are labeled 1-8, with 1 being white's back row, and 8 black's back row. The columns are labeled a-h, with a on the queen's side and h on the king's side (i.e. the white queen starts at d8, and the white king starts at e8). Each piece (but not the pawns) have a letter B: bishop, N: knight, R: rook, Q: queen and K: king.

A move is noted by putting the name of the piece, followed by the square it moves to: e.g. Re3 means the rook goes to the square e3. If more than one rook could go to e3, then the starting row, column or both row and column are used to disambiguate the pieces.
A capture is marked the same as a move, but with an x between the piece name and the ending square: e.g. Rxe3.
Pawn moves and captures are done similarly to piece moves and captures, except no piece letter is given (pawns don't have one), and for pawn captures the starting column is always given.

Some symbols are also added after the move: + denotes check, ++ double check, # checkmate. Other notation can also be added after the move: ? is a bad move, ?? is a horrible move, ! is a good move, and !! is an excellent move.

    Edit: See also Wikipedia.

Ah, that makes sense. My error was I thought that was the final board, and in reading the notation I was thinking, "There's no way they ended up in the positions they're in by making those moves." So I figured I had no idea what the notation meant and gave up. Now I feel silly.

I think he's talking about our game. It's possible I made a serious mistake, but I guess we'll see shortly.

Edit: Besides, move 40 couldn't possibly have been a mistake. If it was, move 39 would also have been a mistake. :P

Good game. I gambled and I lost. Two turn checkmates never work against a competent player I discovered. If I knew that I wouldn't have sacrificed my pawns, but it wasn't a live match so I figure you might slip up as I've did several times. Like how I should pay more attention to knights as I've lost both my bishop and rook to them. I tried to trap your rooks but then you'd just check me to get out of it. At least I got one of them in the end. :)

My apologies for being so stubborn at losing. I wanted to hold the fort for at least 50 turns. I'll make it my mission for the next rounds too, so future opponents beware.

I don't mind you being stubborn -- playing on and hoping for a blunder is a perfectly legitimate chess strategy; although you didn't have much hope after you lost your knight.
