Lots of games like to set themselves up in the future, showcasing their own vision of what awaits mankind beyond our time, and with such there naturally comes a whole bunch of technological advancements and wonders and great historical events. Some of them tend to be rather modest (Halo, for example, is rather low-key about its tech, Spartan wanking aside) while others are much more fantastic but also give themselves plenty of breathing room (The X games and Freelancer are pretty high-tech, but are also something like 1000 years ahead of our time, and Tyrian is the 201st century).

And then you've got the "It's the future, RIGHT NOW!" crowd. I'm pretty sure you can figure out who they are: the games that have mankind making fantastical developments in the span of a few decades, or portraying some kind of apocalypse in the near future, or (most interestingly for this thread) having made predictions for such things only for the date of doom or discovery to have passed years ago. It's like the wonder of SCIENCE!emot-pseudo.gif from the 40s and 50s, except more pixelated.

So in this thread, let's talk about and share the more ridiculous or outright silly predictions that games have made for the future of mankind, especially those of the come-and-gone variety: where airplanes will be the transportation of choice, people will be playing golf on the moon, and computers will be twice as powerful, ten thousand times larger, and so expensive only the five richest kings of Europe will own them, I'll start off with a personal favorite, as well as the thread titler:

    Yeeeees.

EDIT: And since you mentioned Capcom, I guess I should bring in the whole Original Mega Man series, which by 200X gives us fully-functional AI, plasma cannons, teleportation, energy-to-matter conversion, and (depending on the canonicity of Mega Man V GB) faster-than-light dog jets.

Also, would you actually want to hear about a Chryssalid attack?

Also, to the OP: I hate you, because now I need to find that GBA copy of Crystalis.

I wonder if they could design a game where you hold the wiimotes in that way and use them like joysticks. It could come with a little pad you could use to "anchor" it to the table or your lap.

It might be too finicky for use as a serious joystick, but for a fun little WiiWare game it might be pretty cool.

Is it just me or is 1999 a common year for these things to take place? Guess it has something to do with being right before the start of a new millenium.

Wiki says that Half-Life takes place between the years 2000 and 2009, but I don't remember anything directly in the game indicating any specific period.

    Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday.

Oh sure it takes place in the 25th Century but Buck Rogers comes from the 20th Century where in 1999 the Soviet Union and the US engage in a nuclear war. Buck is sent into space to destroy a Soviet space platform where an AI acts as a command center for Soviet operations. Buck disables the thing but his ship is too fucked up to return to Earth so he uses an experimental cryogenic system to freeze himself and wait to be rescued.

And in the 25th Century all the AI are have .DOS at the end of their name. :D
