ARE YOU READY FOR THE NEXT KING OF PHALLAS TOURNAMENT? “So… it’s that time of year again. When martial artists from all over the globe meet to determine who, exactly, amongst them is the best. It should be a chance to entertain the masses, make new friends, hone skills. But every year, ever since the first tournament, has been plagued by catastrophe.
Every year.
I never would have guessed that the host of that first tournament back in 1994 would have been the same man who murdered my wife and daughter. Ever since then, I’ve had to keep my eye on this contest. You never know who’s going to show up next. Megalomaniacs, demons, evil corporations, serial killers – all present and correct. It’s not surprising, I suppose, to see those who seek power congregate amongst those with power.
This year, of course, is the same as ever. I’ve sent my best men to compete, as usual, but I’m going to be keeping surveillance from the side-lines. I have an especially bad feeling this year, almost as if several disasters are waiting to happen…
But I’m certain that my men can take care of themselves. All that’s left is to make sure that we take care of everything else, too.
My name is Heidern.
And I hate this time of year.â€What's this?
This is a phalla based on SNK's legendary series of fighting games,
The King of Fighters.Phalla? What's that?
The Penny Arcade forum's version of the party game, Mafia. Click
here for details.
Each night, you will have to vote to remove a player from the game. Vote in bolded red, like this;
!vote. Retractions are not necessary, but
would be helpful.
Each game day will
normally last 24 hours, and end at
0000 (midnight) GMT - 1700 PST, 2000 EST. If there are changes to this schedule I will be giving you plenty of notice.
Normal rules are in effect; no quoting of role PMs to prove anything, PM me the link to any proboards you set up, etc. There will be no conversion abilities in this game. There may or may not be SNK boss syndrome present.
But what’s the twist?
A pretty big one! This phalla contains a way to fight other players. Since all the players have entered into a martial arts tournament, everyone will get the chance to experience this at least once!
Each player has three different moves to choose from – one
Long Range, one
Mid Range, and one
Short Range. Long range beats short, is weak to mid, and has no effect against another long attack. Mid range beats long range, is weak to short, and has no effect against another mid. Short range beats mid range, is weak to long, and has no effect against another short range. Each player will be given a specific strength value in their role PM – strength is both the number of moves to submit per night, and also the number of fights you can lose before being hospitalised and removed from the game.
Please submit one, and only one, list of moves each night. For the sake of my sanity, it would also be helpful if you submit your moveslist at the same time as the directions for any other abilities you may or may not have.
Fights in the tournament are four versus four. You have all been automatically grouped into teams of four for the purposes of the tournament; one person per team is the team leader, and must – in addition to their moves list – also send in the
order that his or her team members should fight in.
If the tournament isn’t enough for you, you can also challenge another player to a one on one fight. To do so, use cyan – as an example,
challenge Thorgot! Challenges cannot be retracted, and do not need to be accepted by the player being challenged. This is why it is vital for you to send in a moves list every night.
Winning fights will, over time,
amplify the power and number of your abilities. Be careful of taking part in too many fights in a single night, however – fatigue will set in, and you will become
easier to KO.
In the event of a draw, both players will be considered KOed.
I don’t get it – I need an example!
Well, since you asked so nicely.
To begin, let’s take a one on one fight between KOF’s main characters; Kyo vs. Iori.
Kyo is strength 5, and so is Iori, and so they both PM me 5 attacks.
Kyo uses the following;
LMSSL
Iori uses;
MLSLS
So the fight works out as –
LR vs MR (Iori +1)
MR vs LR (Kyo +1)
SR vs SR (draw)
SR vs LR (Iori +1)
LR vs SR (Kyo +1)
Kyo and Iori both have 2 points, and the match is a draw.
But what about team battles? How do they work?Let’s take two random teams; Kyo, Joe, Terry and Kim vs Iori, Ryo, Mai and Vice.
Kyo and Iori are the two team leaders, and give their respective team orderings as;
1st: Kyo
2nd: Terry
3rd: Kim
4th: Joe
1st: Iori
2nd: Vice
3rd: Mai
4th: Ryo
Kyo is strength 5, and so is Iori, and so they both PM me 5 attacks.
Kyo uses the following;
LMSSL
Iori uses;
MLSLS
So the fight works out as –
LR vs MR (Iori +1)
MR vs LR (Kyo +1)
SR vs SR (draw)
SR vs LR (Iori +1)
LR vs SR (Kyo +1)
Kyo and Iori both have 2 points, the match is a draw, and both are KOed. The fight then proceeds to Terry vs Vice.
Terry has strength 5, and uses MMSSL.
Vice is only strength 4, however, and uses SLLM.
MR vs SR (Vice +1)
MR vs LR (Terry +1)
SR vs LR (Vice +1)
SR vs MR (Terry +1)
This would be a draw, but because Terry has a strength higher than Vice, he gets an extra free hit – meaning he wins and Vice is KOed. Which means that Terry is still alive, and the next player on Iori’s team gets to fight him; Mai.
Terry still uses MMSSL (remember, only submit one movelist per day.)
Mai is strength 5 as well, and uses MMLML.
MR vs MR (draw)
MR vs MR (draw)
SR vs LR (Mai +1)
SR vs MR (Terry +1)
LR vs LR (draw)
And we have a draw. But, because Terry has already fought one battle, he is fatigued and gets -1 to his effective combat score – so Mai wins by a whisker. If Terry had won this fight, he’d have gotten a -2 penalty in the next match.
And so on, until there’s a winner of the match.

Oh, right... that reminded me that I wanted to ask some clarification questions regarding the battle systems.
How many 1v1 challenges may be made by a single player each night? Relatedly, how many 1v1 challenges may be accepted by an individual each night?
What is the resolution order for 1v1 challenges and scheduled team battles? Do 1v1 challenges have an effect on a player's stamina when it comes to the team battles, or vice versa?
Is it possible for team captiains / vice captains to send in default orders for their teammates in case of any potential inactivity?
You can make as many challenges as you'd like; however, given that the average strength is going to be 5, combined with the effects of fatigue, any more than one or two challenges a night is probably going to be counter-productive. Challenges are automatically accepted, in contrast to my Fatal Fury mini.
Team battles take place first. 1v1 challenges will happen in the order that the challenge was made; the tournament fight will have an effect on the player's stamina.
I hadn't considered that last possibility, but yes, it sounds like a good idea.
If a team loses in the tournament, are they eliminated from it (i.e. is it single elimination)?
What happens to a team when a member is hospitalized (eliminated from the game)? What about if a team captain is incapacitated?
The first day of the tournament will be single elimination; the format for subsequent days may change.
There will be abilities that can remove KOs from players; since a team will have won a lot of fights in order to still be in the tournament's later stages, they'll be likely to have at least one player who can heal.
When a member of a team is removed from the game, the team remains in the tournament with a player (or more) missing. If the team captain wishes, they can recruit a player from one of the losing teams into their ranks. More info about this will be in day 1's narration.
If a team captain is lost, another member of the team will become leader.
