Edit: And it's a good damn thing I did because the next story at the wall cost fifty fucking grand.
50k for [modest] fanservice!!!
Also, I'm not surprised links to subs and manga viewing sites aren't allowed. After all, it's considered a form of piracy (since it's not officially translated and released within non-Japanese countries).
So now that VC is an anime, and now that Dragon Ball the movie has come out (and yeah it was probably horrible), do you guys feel that a VC live-action film could be done right?

Selvaria is a monster . She ran out and immediately killed 2 guys. I managed to rescue them by parking Edelweiss in front of her to block her active fire and running a lancer over to recover them and then retreating her but man. Scary as hell. That last run where you've got the radiators down was also alarming, because by that point I only had one lancer left on the field and had used up all my reinforcements. I was worrying Selvaria would run over and laser my last lancer and make me do the whole god damn thing over again. She seemed content to just escort the prince's tank though, so victory was mine in the end.
Ok after reading your runthrough of ch7 I got two tips for you. Though one of them at this point wont mater much.
First of all after you have succesfuly evacuated a charactor you can call them for reinforcments one turn later. Retreating them works diffrently, you can actualy call them from another base imediatly. You basicly have x number of units you can have feilded for any given mission the instant that one comes off the feild you can put another one out assuming you have the 1 cp to call them. I think permadeath'd charactors still eat they're slot till the mission ends.
Chapter 7 tip:
You can throw a grenade into the top of the radiator to one shot them.

I'm pretty sure when they talked about reinforcements, they said you could only have 8 per battle. and I deffinitely hit that number swapping people all over the damn place figuring out how to deal with the tank, getting better positioning, etc. etc. You can retreat/send back into your reserves as many dudes as you want, far as I can tell, but can only pull 8 out.
I managed to beat Ch. 7 with an A without using any retreat or reinforce techniques what so ever. And from reading all the comments people have had about Ch. 7 and some of the crazy walkthroughs I've read I can only deduce that is was a total fluke. No one died, the only guys you got even close to death were my lancers trying to take out turrets.
And regarding the enemy reinforcements on that map:
Selvaria seemed perfectly content to sit on the initial ledge she came in on, with her entire squad, for the entirety on the time she was there. I even had my sniper take a pot shot at one of her black scout's heads. He went down admist all his squad mates and STILL Selvaria didn't move. Does she only move once the third radiator is blown or something? Cause once I blew that thing I spent about 16 CP alternating between unloading with my two lancers and restocking them with my engineer.

She should have moved when she first appeared. It was probably a glitch that she didn't move.

....No
I think a live action VC has the potential to be done better than something like Dragonball simply because it's more grounded (well, aside from Selvaria). I mean, it's just WW2 with different uniforms. And a crazy lady encased in blue flame. And giant tanks. And a pig with wings.
That said, I am positive that no studio exists that would give it the proper treatment.
1. In the game, joining the Militia was mandatory; the translations by the Ayako subbing group (which is decent) reveals that joining it isn't mandatory.
2. The man who drives the old tank seemed to be a Darsen/Darcen Hater; telling off Isara. Dies because of it. ;P
3. Susie seems to have met Welkin once in the past at the university they both go to. (She's also part of a wealthy family if you didn't know)
4. Welkin is a straight-up oblivious whale the way the subs translate his dialogue (admittedly humorous).
5. Isara STILL handles the Edelweiss like a Tokyo Drifter (NOT a bad thing).
And two neat little [WORKSAFE] pics I found on PIXIV (1st one is somewhat large):
Redesigned faces give somewhat more of a "real" feel, but makes Eleanor Varrot a bit ugly (maybe it's the faint shadowing effect of her nose)...

If PIXIV doesn't like it, here are two alternate links:
The First one and the Second one.

Alright, while chatting in the Penny Arcade PS3 chat room a week ago, I heard about the $30 Gamespot sale and said, "Screw it, all of these people can't be wrong, and the price is right. All the sigs and praise have worked, because I have no idea what I'm buying, but I'll get it."
Alright sigs, avatars, and comment bubbles on PSN. You win. I tried Valkyria Chronicles.
And it's not for me. After tyring the VC demo, and my recent time with Starcraft, I've learned that there is something about being defeated in a strategy game that bothers more than any other kind of losing. I get this feeling of investment in the decisions, then when things go so poorly so quickly...I'm just not wired to take it well.
I see the appeal, though, and I am glad that you are promoting an underdog game that is so well made.
I also love the art in the game. That's the most I have enjoyed an opening cinematic in a long time.
and I get all worried. I have never played a SRPG before (I know VC isn't like other SRPGs). The only RPGS I've played are the Mario and Luigi Series, Paper Mario 2, Kingdom Hearts 1 and 2, and Dark Cloud 2, and most of those are generally classified as action oriented RPGS. I have no idea what I'm getting into. The "investment in the decisions" part seems like something I'd have a problem with as well, always to play it "right", whatever that means.
Back around December, I was convinced to try the demo. I thought it looked promising, but nothing really grabbed me. I figured I’m just more of a strategy gamer than an RPG gamer and left it at that.
Fast forward to this week’s totally sweet sale price. A close friend of mine had been recommending it with a zeal comparable to the PAers, and with the thought that perhaps the demo doesn’t do it justice and I should just trust all these folks who can’t stop talking about it, I picked it up.
I played the first couple of missions. It was definitely fun; I knew I wouldn’t regret buying it for the sale price, but I still didn’t see what had everyone so excited apart from the beautiful art style and presentation.
Then I got to the capital. Squad 7. The HQ. Introduction to classes, experience, and weapons development. As I browsed through the recruits, examining their varying backgrounds and trying to figure out who would work well with who, the depth of the gameplay that was soon to come as well as the gravity of sending these unique characters out to risk their NPC lives began to sink in and I realized: This game really is going to be as awesome as everyone’s been saying.
and I get more hopeful. I've tried the demo, and I thought it was alright, but it felt like a tiny part of something much bigger, and I figured that the more in depth stuff and the story would grab me more than one battle tutorial.
So, as an absolute rookie to the genre, how do I make the most of this game? What should I do/not do? Any tips for VC along the lines of "in Assassin's Creed, turn off the HUD to make the game better"? I'm already going to force myself to not replay battles/missions/whatever they're called over and over to get better scores, because my OCD will ruin it for me. Should I do everything to keep my troops alive, or let them die, because there are more? I may look back at this post and laugh, as none of my worrying applies to VC, but I know how to play shooters, I know how to play platformers. I want to like VC and SPRGs too, I've just never tried.

You got me into this, PA, so help me enjoy it.
Congrats on picking up this gem of a game :^:
First and most important advice: Go at your own pace. There is a lot to absorb in a game like VC, and a lot of ways to complete each mission. Don't feel rushed or forced to complete each mission a certain way because the game is flexible enough to provide enjoyment for differing playing styles (from the sRPG newbie to hardened veteran).
Some other helpful info/tips
You can replay skirmishes (available after mission 7?) over and over to your OCD's content (which is honestly a decent way of grinding a little extra cash/XP), but Story missions can only be replayed again in New Game+.
Missions are ranked, and give you differing levels of XP and money based upon mission completion. But don't worry! That difference between highest and lowest isn't that great, and in the worst case scenario, you can just replay a skirmish or two in order to make up the XP/money disparity.
Soldiers perma-die if they are left incapacitated on the battlefield for more than three turns or if an enemy touches them first. Soldiers that perma-die are then dead for the rest of the game, so keep that in mind. While it's advisable to save your soldiers whenever possible (especially if they are your favorites), you'll have quite a pool to choose from, so there will always be more.
You can save the game in-between actions during a mission, so if you MUST do it right each time, it's advisable to save often. Note this is generally considered against the spirit of the game, but if that's what it takes for you to enjoy it, then save away!
Make sure to visit the Headquarters (when it becomes available) after each mission to spend XP/Cash and get optional side missions / rewards.
The side missions offered by the reporter are not required, but they do further develop some of the main characters' story lines. Don't feel obligated to buy them all on the first run (especially if you're low on cash), but just remember that they are there.
Don't forget about smoke! (you'll know when you get to it)
I'm sure there are plenty of other tips/advice that could be inserted here, and in fact there are FAQs and walkthroughs all over that will give you as much information as you could ever want regarding Valkyria Chronicles. Just remember that it's your game now, and your experience with it is what you make of it. Also, feel free to ask for help in here, as we've all been there before.

My backlog is finally catching up to this game. I would get to playing it properly sooner, but I want to finish a few other games that I have right at the end before putting time into this. Also, I'm stuck on like chapter 4, and it's annoying me.

Some are simple scenes (at least the first two) while others lead to personalized missions. You access them by going the Cap. Select in the Book Mode menu and selecting them. They'll be easy to spot, they don't have numbers like other chapters.
Or you could keep pressing L1 while on your most recent chapter to flip the pages back to the Extra chapters. Your choice.
1. In the game, joining the Militia was mandatory; the translations by the Ayako subbing group (which is decent) reveals that joining it isn't mandatory.
2. The man who drives the old tank seemed to be a Darsen/Darcen Hater; telling off Isara. Dies because of it. ;P
