So after six months of waffling, I finally broke down and bought an Xbox 360 (Resident Evil 5 and Netflix tipped me over the fence), and my three housemates each bought controllers.
We beat Castle Crashes in about three days, but now I'm left wondering if there are any other excellent 4-player co-op games. Live Arcade games would be the best choice for us, as they're the cheapest. None of us are fans of sports games, so that's out.
Any suggestions? I'm going to buy Street Fighter 4 soon, but something that all of us can play together would be great.
Marvel Ultimate Alliance is pushed pretty heavily here. I honestly can't stand it, and found it to be tedious and annoying even when playing with my bro and a friend.
As for XBLA... Doom? Duke 3D?
You should really give NHL09 a shot. Hockey doesn't really count as a sport, imo. It's a bit like wrestling actually, except, y'know, it's real.

I'm the same. I loved X-Men Legends on the GameCube, but I was really disappointed by Ultimate Alliance. It feels clunky, and I was expecting online/splitscreen coop, because really, there's no reason for it not to have it. But it doesn't.
Hmm. 4-player arcade games...
I enjoyed Bionic Commando: Rearmed. I think it has 4-player coop - I know it has 4-player deathmatch.
Oh yeah, you can get it by glitching it, but there's performance issues in high-load areas and there's a few levels in the game that have a video overlay over the gameplay which will freeze the system if you've got more than two people playing. The guy actually mentions this. The upshot of that is that it's not really suitable for four people playing through the first time.

We all abhor console FPS' (but we do play L4D and TF2 on our computers together regularly). I'll be looking into Marvel Ultimate Alliance, thanks for the suggestion. Hopefully I can find it for cheap some place.
Keep the suggestions coming guys, I'm awash in disposable income!

Agreed--at least about Ultimate Alliance. I think it's a little too repetitive, but I could be doing it wrong.
Since split screen is no longer in vogue as much as it used to be, there aren't as many 4-player games on all consoles (though I think the Xbox 360 has the highest percentage). The ones I immediately own....
Halo 3 (multiplayer supports 4 people on the same console, just not co-operative)
Dead or Alive 4 (tag team mode)
Soul Calibur 4 kinda (not really true 4 person support, just a system to take turns, I think?)
Doom (split screen like Halo)
Perfect Dark Zero (not really popular however)
There are a bunch of backwards-compatible Xbox 1 games that are also 4-player.
Culdcept SAGA is a great four player game. My wife and I play with two friends at least once a month. I think that game has logged more hours in our Xbox than any other.
The setup is perfect: you can adjust the winning condition (the amount of mana you need to win) so the games don't take too long; you can play against each other singly or in teams, two on two; and you can give everyone a blind deck, so no one gets hammered by a player that has unlocked all the cards - players choose a random Green/Red deck or Blue/Yellow deck or whatever.
It's an amazing game and I can't recommend it highly enough for some couch action with friends.

If you like sidescrollers, then there's Alien Hominid HD and Metal Slug 3.
Schizoid is fantastic, but only 2 player.
Oh, and pick up Dash of Destruction. For a free Doritos advertisement, it's good fun.
Halo 3 only supports 2-player co-op locally. It's 4-player online, though.

Oh? They have free games? Are there any more free games?

Also, my flatmate has bought a bunch of Arcade games. So they're basically free (for me).

You know I never got Hexic on my hard drive. I was very disappointed.

That's what happened with me. I bought my Premium second-hand and the HDD had been wiped. A week later, I was playing the hell out of it.

(EDIT) forgot game suggestions. Will only mention stuff not already mentioned.
for XBLA:
TMNT
Heavy Weapon
Geometry Wars 2
Worms
Bomberman
Small Arms (I didn't like it but meh)
Carcassonne (I think?)
For retail games:
Culdcept Saga
Ghost Recon (1 or 2) I'm pretty sure offer 4 player local co-op
Guitar Hero/Rock Band

It's a bit story-heavy and lengthy, but it's a real blast playing with friends during the big boss battles and such.
Only Geometry Wars 2 has the local co-op, but yes, it's totally worth it.
I seem to always forget about N+, but get N+.

Heavy Weapon has 4 player local co-op (survival mode or something?).
Also, Uno Rush looks like it'd be a blast with four people locally.

If you're going to play Carcassonne locally, just buy the real board game. Then you can get the Inns & Cathedrals expansion.
