Space Invaders Extreme -- out on XBLA on Wednesday, May 6

Looks like we're finally getting Space Invaders Extreme on Xbox Live Arcade this week, according to this news post. It will cost 800 points.

Jeff Minter apparently worked on the visualization effects for this version.

I never played the PSP or DS versions, but I really did want to get it for the DS. I just never got around to it for some reason. It looks like a lot of fun, and this version [strike]brings us multiplayer[/strike] has same screen co-op for up to 4 players.

Space Invaders Extreme Trailer

Looks fun to me, despite the jarring cuts made in the trailer. I've got some XBLA points just waiting to be spent.

There's another trailer over at Giant Bomb which seems kind of weird because of the sound effects.

As I was creating this thread, I found that Giant Bomb did a "Quick Look" of Space Invaders where Jeff Gerstmann and Ryan Davis discuss it as Jeff plays for about 11 minutes. It's definitely the best video of the game out there because it shows uninterrupted gameplay. I'm definitely sold on this one.

*edited to correct my mistake on the multiplayer.

I always thought the pinball-style lighters on the screen was a nice touch. When you're trying to light them all up, the game becomes much more intense.

I can't even beat the standard Hard route, or get to stage 3 on Extreme. D:

I love this game on my NDS and so I can highly recommend what looks to be a great XBLA version.

Both versions already on the market have multiplayer, it's just not same-screen co-op.

Actually, it has multiplayer on the DS.

I watched the quick look on Giant Bomb and they really need to learn about the hold button. That shit is really useful when you have the laser and is up against enemies with shields.

Oh FUCK. So bought. I already have this on the DS, but this version is going to be so much trippier. Jeff Minter makes digital art.

It's annoying in the video because they are blowing them up all willy-nilly. In the actual game you begin to subconsciously sync your shots up with the rhythm of the music and it all clicks.

I've got it for the DS but I hit something of a roadblock in one of the boss stages... maybe I should try it on XBL.

its not as abrasive as it would seem, you get a groove and it really feels good. atleast for the single player. that multi-player mode seems really abrasive. they may have screwed it up. I'll have to check the demo, because if the MP part is that abrasive, I may have to pass as well.

Too bad the giant bomb guys SUCK at this game. What the hell is with all the bad players making videos for this game?

I sold my DS copy of this in anticipation of this day. The Jeff Minter bit makes me very pleased. Any news of new modes? Hopefully there's online multiplayer: the one time I played vs. mode with a friend, I had a lot of fun.

I'm really not a big fan of portable gaming (I really only keep the DS around for the occasional trip & exclusives) & the DS's tiny screen & pathetic speakers really seem to be doing an injustice to Space Invaders Extreme. Plus, the 360 leaderboards alone would keep me from wanting to play the portable version once I buy the XBLA version (the same reason why even if a PSP or DS version of Pac-Man: Championship Edition was released, I would not want to buy it despite it being one of my favorite games of all time).

So anybody got this because its awesome. But the online vs mode is very laggy at the moment. The music is much more bassier (sp?) than the DS or PSP version and also its basically the same as the first DS game so it doesnt have the new features that Extreme 2 has on the DS. The visuals are spot on and controls at first feel a little unresponsive but soon catch on. This is a must buy.

You can paint his visualizations in all the bad light you want, it doesn't make you any less wrong. Minter claim to fame in the video game industry is those trippy visualizations and no one does it better than him.

Just don't let me catch you ever, ever making a "dull, grey, brown" comment about a western video game after the above quote.

Oh, I absolutely appreciate everyone's right to enjoy what they feel like, and yes, that style is pretty much unique to Minter and there's plenty of people who love it. Personally though, it's like an interactive migraine.

As for visual styles in games in general, I believe everything in its right place. If a game is grey/brown and it works, then good. I'm not going to demand arbitrary colour just to appease a certain audience. Same with games that make rainbows look bland, if it works, then fine.

This is a great version. I only wish they would have gotten T(NT) for the music (folks behind the music of Tempest 2000 and Defender 2000).

It's got the perfect difficulty curve, too.

First thing I'm doing when I get this game is throwing that remix into the game via custom soundtracks. Tempest 2000 has one of the flat-out best soundtracks EVER.

After playing this for about five minutes, my wife asked me to turn down the game 'cause the sound was so irritating. She never does that, and I'm inclined to agree with her. The game itself plays fine, but didn't speak to me too much.

Cool...I figured out how to play this game last night!
To pull off Noryega attack, basicly every alien that you kill on the final row will be worth x20 points. Think about that. Use this technique on any enemies that are coming in rectangle format. Don't try this on the ones that are split into two group going opposite rotation. Also beware of killing the one with flashy eyes on the last line, because they will most likely kill you once you kill them.

If you use this technique to kill 8 of the same type (I am not entirely sure what triggers, but I think this is it), all enemies will turn into UFOs. Now you can kill these with the Noryega technique, and you will most likely get over 100k per row!

Also, killing two sets of color, like 4 blue then 4 red, will make arrows appear at the top of the screen. This denotes a flashing "bonus" UFO that will fly in from the top. Kill what's left on screen and make sure you defeat this saucer. Also win the bonus mode that you go into, and you will go into FEVER MODE. Use Fever mode to concentrate fire on UFOs for 10k each. You can kill the invaders, but if they look like good format for Norega attack, then wait and just kill the saucers at the top.

Enter boss with about 1.3 mil+ points to get S rank.

Getting A Rank was harder!! You will need to enter the boss with about 1.1mil points.

I did 900k-1mil and only got B rank.

Good luck. I need only help with co-op arcade and 25 online wins, so hit me up if anyone wants to get these done. XBL.
