The United States has such boring looking "OFFICIAL BURHURRHURR" money. It's cubicle material.
I'd love to see you tell that to all the sculptors and artists at the mint. Our money may not be as colorfully rad as all that, but it's still pretty fucking badass.
What, you mean the people that copy the same design when they make the new plates? Okay, fine. It's not like they're coming up with any new material.
Also, I don't think the US would ever have money that looks anything like Australia's. I kinda feel like our money really represents the "personality" of the states. The design of Australia's money just seems too...bright and colorful and carefree! for us. I'm not saying the design of our money is shit, but I don't think it's as pretty to look at.
It's interesting that the newest bill designs have been a bit more colorful, and are now asymmetrical...it seems like they're trying to make the bills look prettier by taking cues from other countries that have similar designs:
compared to the older version:
I actually feel that the colors are even a bit more vibrant in the newer version than that picture would have you believe.
Still! It would be cool if they eventually made the bills in colors different enough from eachother that you could tell the denomination of each bill without seeing a number.
all the new state coins and presidential portraits didn't carve and draw themselves
I like the old layouts and the new portraits better.
The ratio between "the people that create the new design" and "the people that make the new plates from the same design" is probably pretty significant.
Yeah it's "art" but I still don't think it's as nice looking as some other countries' money.

then it's just a difference of tastes, because the process isn't any different with the foreign designs either.
I dunno, I really like the way our money looks. It's highly intricate and skillful work, yet subtle at the same time. I don't need everything around me to be flamboyantly artsy and colorful just because I'm an "artist," you know?

Even if I chose some different profession and didn't identify myself as an artist, I'd probably still prefer that design, just because ah laik eet.

Right, which is kinda why I was confused as to why you said "Tell that to all the engravers and such"...because they're typically not the original dudes who came up with the designs, as far as I know.

I took offense to "cubicle work" as pejorative
yeah as I said before, the typical person making the plates anywhere, either here or abroad is not the one who came up with the idea. In fact, as I understand it, it's mostly machines that make the copies now.
The naked breasts of the female figures on the $5 Silver Certificate reportedly caused some minor controversy when several Boston society ladies took offense to the design. Some bankers reportedly refused to accept the notes in transactions, and the term banned in Boston allegedly originates from the $5 Silver Certificate. The notes were quickly replaced for the Series of 1899 notes.
I feel mildly dorky for knowing so much about the history of US money
Nah man, that's pretty rad to know stuff like that.
It's better you know the history of something like US currency than how many space crystals it takes to run what type of starship...

I've decided to take a whack at learning to draw again.
Like, for reals this time, none of that comic book shit.
I've been doing blind contour drawings of my hand, negative space drawings of sunglasses, and then just twisting up my kneaded eraser and drawing that.
This shit actually makes my brain hot. What the fuck is up with that?

As you should be. The next one will have the glorious face of obama surrounded by better lit harlots.
I like the old layouts and the new portraits better.
That'll ever happen.
Right, but I figure they could've done that a few other ways and not ended up with bills that look the way they currently do.

N....no. I'm imagining what our money would look like if the goal was to reflect America's "personality" and trust me it ain't pretty.
Printed overseas because it's cheaper, of course.

It's these guys that are the main artists for the mint. It has their credits in there too.
