Did it all just really not matter? I prefer to think that was the case but I guess there's a pretty strong argument that he was a little insane.
From people I've talked to, he was either completely insane and hallucinated the whole thing, or he really killed all those people but no one noticed, and it's a Wall-Street-style indictment of the materialism, narcissism, and total self-involvement of the 80s.
I'm pretty sure it's a little of both. I'm sure that at least parts of his narration are real, even if none of the killings were. But he could not have had a full-fledged firefight in the streets with the police, he did not hit a guy over a dozen times in the head with a hatchet for him to bleed out over five minutes, the ATM did not ask him to feed it a cat.
I think he was an insane dude, who had a job that conveniently did not require him to function properly, or indeed do anything at all, and had delusions/hallucinations of rape and mass murder.
