I've done basically all the gathering hall quests up to rank 6, the monsters do more damage and are tougher but it is still possible to beat them alone. You just need to be well prepared (and use lance for Tigrex and ranged for Plesioth). Though I am currently stuck on the Ash Lao Shan Lung urgent. Bastard takes down nearly all my HP even with Rathalos Soul equipped and upgraded if he hits me with his tail or steps on me.
Just bring a Farcaster and Bomb Material + Exciteshrooms to build more. Ninja escape! You can't kill Lao Shan Lung until he reaches zone 5 anyway (he always has a reserve of 2000 Health or so by the time he reaches that zone). This isn't because your weapons are weak... he simply cannot be killed (so dumb :-P). You shouldn't ever fail that mission because of deaths x 3. If you have issues with his foot stomps, aim for the head instead.
Felyne Comrades level up 50% faster. They get XP based on the guild points of the missions you clear. I don't know the exact value, but basically the more guild points that you earn while adventuring with a Felyne Companion, the faster the Felyne Companion levels. Comrade Guide gives 50% more XP.

Saw a video of Tigrex in Monster Hunter Frontier Online today. Had no idea he was in it. I thought he'd been created for MH Portable 2nd/MH Freedom 2. Doesn't this mean everything they "added" was just recycled from Frontier except Pokke Village?
What guild level quests do you start getting cool monsters? 3-4 have a pretty low level selection. I remember thinking hotdog when I saw the fire wyverns in 2. 3-4 have been pretty much kill crabs.

5. That's when you'll have your tigrexes, diabloses, gravioses, the multiple shades of raths, kirins, elders, and all the other fun stuff.
Then you'll have to fight all the stronger versions of everything as you move to high rank.
Then you'll have to fight the even stronger versions of everything as you move to G rank.
And very soon, you'll learn to loathe these words: plates, brainstems, hearts, rubies, jewels, and anything with the prefix heavenly. :P
I'm going into cute overload. The Felyne kitchen just gets better and better.

Okay, playing with someone else in MHFU is f-u-n fun. Dyvion and I, despite our rocky start (my Adhoc mode was set to auto - yay for setting a channel!), we played for quite some time, and ended the night on a high note for me. Lao-Shan Lung is FUN. I mean, I don't think I've had that much in an action game for a very long time. I am currently carving out all the gathering hall quests, and thanks to Dyvion, I got through a good portion of 3* and 4* quests.
How does elemental weakness work? Do they need to be weak to the element for it to affect them at all? IE if they are weak to fire will the elemental damage on a ice weapon do nothing? Or will it do less elemental damage than what they are weak against?

The actual damage/elemental damage formula is somewhat complicated (at least, I'd rather not have to sit there and really crunch the numbers), but generally speaking, yeah, it sort of works like that. If a monster is really weak to thunder to a certain part, he'll take more damage from that particular element. If he's only slightly weak to thunder, he'll still take some elemental damage, but not nearly as much. And if he's resistant to thunder, I think he'll either take a not-worth-mentioning amount of damage, or just plain out no elemental damage at all. Note that the raw damage will still count though, so it's not like you'd be doing 0 damage at all.
Numbers of raw and elemental often throw people off, if you don't take into account all of the variables. If a sword did 1200 raw/ 500 thunder, that's not plain out 1700 damage you're doing a hit. Hell, it isn't even remotely close. Counting things like the type of swing, class variables for the weapon type, the monster's raw and elemental hitzone multipliers, other defensive numbers, elemental damage dividers, weapon sharpness, rage, etc., you get a decidedly different number than what is represented by a weapon's stats.
Actual damage can be a pretty complicated thing, and I find it easier to interpret it as "this hammer squishes rathalos faster than that one" and leave it at that. :P
Uh! Tigrex down. You like that don't you, you striped fuck!
You know sex, it was like that.
*edit Oh god....the stuff I can make now. I'm so happy
Very nice! The first tigrex kill is one of my proudest moments. It's so satisfying watching him collapse into the snow, then running amok with my carving knife to get his precious bits. Ahh, memories.
Great Hornflies, where to get them? Other than the farm of course.
I'm 2 buggers away from a complete blademaster Obituary set and the farm bushes are not being generous.

Can't recall since I've always killed it in one go or died trying, but does Chameleos "flee" and retain damage like Kusha/Luna/Teo?
Chameleos does flee IIRC. Only happened once though, since he seems to have the least HP out of the lot (or rather, he's much much easier to hit than the other elders).
Woo, downed monoblos on my first go AND got its horn and tail. Standing between their legs swinging a greatsword at random works surprisingly well on the bigger beasties.
Question: is kut-ku's beak breakable? I've never noticed it looking different, but the chart seems to say it is. I never even noticed Congalala's claws and tail were breakable, though now I remember noticing him losing the item he holds in his tail sometimes.

Kut-Ku's beak doesn't break. Of all the Bird Wyverns, only Yian Garuga has a beak you can damage (stagger head 3x).
Conga dropping whatever is held in his tail is considered the "break" for his tail. You'll get a shiny drop, but the tail doesn't come off. Blango's tail gets slightly shorter when broken (it's very difficult to tell), but nothing at all drops off the monster

Took down Daimyo Hermitaur on the way to work today. He KO'd me once due, again, to me getting myself cornered, but really it was just like fighting the normal Hermitaurs on the beaches. It has slow, long attacks that are easy to dodge. I used my new Red Sabre on it and killed it. The only attack that I couldn't judge was the one where it buries itself and comes up under you.
Okay, so I've got a crossover cable now! I should be able to bridge my PS3 and PC through my PC's LAN card, right?
Its just been proving incredibly difficult to do so (PS3 refuses to find an IP address or something). There must be something direly obvious I'm missing :C

Thanks for the fun time MonkeyConQueso! Also, we're now on Okinawa and loving the warm humid climate... I never ever ever ever want to live in a desert again! Stupid Idaho. In any case, as soon as I get my drivers license and we find a car (we have a few prospects already) I'm going to start the hunt for a used japanese Wii... and if that fails, a new Wii, and I'll just sell it when I get the English version of Tri. I'm so spoiled... Viva Okinawa!

Huh. It looks like Hammers are more my thing than Long Swords! I'm perfectly content to run in circles waving my arms and screaming like a little girl before rushing in for a big one two and taking off for the hills again.

I tried some weapons and always fall back to the sword and shield. It just suits me. Though I'll go with a greatsword for some things (like getting big damage on a Cephalos/drome before it sinks back into the sand).
I'm amazed that they managed to make the weapons so different, but not necessarily better than one another.
'Course everything about this game caught me by surprise. The movesets for the monsters are a lot more fun to play with than the usual chase in circles til ded or 1,2,3,4,1,2,3... routine.

When I played the demo I wished there was a lock on ability. I stuck to it and beat one of the big monsters in it and grudgingly (well, eagerly grudgingly) bought the game. Now I see why a lock on ability would wreck the experience.
holy shit the 'gather 3 popo tongues' mission from the village elder is terrifying
It (poorly) teaches you that you do not have to kill the big monster in a mission when the objective doesn't require killing it. Just get your popo tongues, and clear out any time Tigrex enters your zone.

The trick to the digging attack is that he surfaces under where a target was the moment he finishes going underground. If you move from where you are standing after he finishes burrowing he'll pop up where you were, or possibly under where your cat or another player was.
Tried hunting my first elder dragon yesterday, the one that's an elder 4 star quest in the snowy mountains , and damn is that wind shield some bullshit.

Basil, when you're in your kitchen, try dismissing one of your cats. Try it both ways when you're asked to confirm your action.
edit: and don't save if you want to keep your cat.
Nice that I could make it just by running around the jungle and breaking about twenty pickaxes.
