Looking for a new card game
ShogunHair long; money long; me and broke wizards we don't get alongRegistered Userregular
A few friends and I are interested in a new card game of some sort. We're looking for something that isn't as complicated as Magic but is still creative and has some depth. We'd also prefer it didn't require buying deck after deck and booster pack after pack. There are some shops that might sell CCG sort of games. The only one I know of besides maybe comic shops is a place called the Game Board.
Anyone recommend some games we might be able to get into?
Race for the Galaxy and Dominion are both fucking great, and neither is collectible (i.e. you buy the game, and that's it, though Race has an expansion you can also buy).
I think if you get anything other than Race For The Galaxy you will never find happiness in life.
Edit: Citadels is a great game, as well, but isn't as....Complex? As RftG. Citadels is about playing the people you are playing with. RftG is about building an empire.

'Fuck yeah, me too. What little kid ever pretended to be part of the lynch-mob?'
Seconding flux, although it definitely isn't something you could sit down and play for hours straight, but more of a thing to whip out whenever you guys are bored.

While it's certainly not new, if you haven't played it I would definitely recommend Illuminati.
I've heard bad things about Flux for repeated plays. Munchkin inevitably turns into "everyone gang up on the guy at level 9," and gets boring quickly.
I've played multiple games of 6-player Munchkin recently that ended up with the most ridiculous baseball between four people who were all level 9, and the others being really sneaky about their cards in order to make someone else use their card so they could save their card for someone else. It's awesome.

Yes! I forgot this was a pure card game. Unlike Flux, this game will take a good chunk of time.

We bought Killer Bunnies and highly enjoy it. There's a crapload of expansions, so you can invest as much or as little as you feel like. Just know that it is by far best to buy the expansions in order.
Munchkin is a good game. In the same light, I would also highly recommend Chez Geek. It's much like munchkin, but instead of D&D theme, you're an average bachelor type, trying to earn Slack by buying things (booze, food, toys) and doing activities (movies, nookie, concerts, etc).

Go old school: Cribbage. I finally learned how to play it not too long ago and thought it was great. You can play up to four people and it's cheap - all you need is the board (which are easily found) and a deck of cards.
I've only heard great things about Dominion, like everyone here has said. It's top 10 on board game geek for a reason.
As for CCGs, VTES (Vampire: The Eternal Struggle) is pretty fun. I'm not much for CCGs and only started playing a few months ago, but I like that's it requires a lot of strategy and social interaction. Also, you can field a decent deck for $20 (I've only spent maybe $30 and have won at the weekly game I play a few times). So that's an option.

You don't actually need a board- I had a 2 person board, and when I would play with three people I would just keep score by tally marks. 121 points wins the game, if you lose with less than 91 points you've been skunked, less than 61 points is a double skunk.
Cribbage is a pretty great game, especially considering that it's a standard deck card game that can be played to full without betting.
Im going to second: Citadels - Fun but you really need 4 people. It also can get pretty heated if you play like me and my friends. Its fairly simple, but games go quick, and i really dig the randomization system
gloom - just picked it up. The basic game is to torment and kill your family. Its pretty simple (there are a few expansions too) but its fun if you take the RP/storytelling aspect and run with it.

So I'm definitely looking into Red Dragon Inn, RftG, and Dominion. Every place I've called either doesn't sell them or is out of stock. I know of one place that has Dominion but its $50.
One way me and my friends play is, every time you do something good or bad to a member of one of the families, you have to make up a compelling story explaining what happened.

Seriously, it's not that bad, and you can do okay with one of those 10$ starter decks.
i actually second this one. only problem with yugioh is netdecking (same as magic really) but yugioh has a ton of different strats to take advantage of or you can just play beat em up (and no spending hundreds of dollars in pain and shock lands just to have them cycle out in 3 months (grrr)

why aren't you buying off the internet? As far as single purchase games like the ones you listed? Buying off the internet will save you about 40%. http://www.boardgameprices.com/

I've always felt the game got a kinda bad rep. I'm sure the show was retarded but the actual game is pretty damn fun.

though i will say i hated the time when cyber dragon and mobius were huge and everyone only played becks revolving around them. also yatta garasu and deck with catapult turtle and the scientist guy (edit: magical scientist)

screw those eras
(secretly i love yatta garasu era)
what I like about the game is pretty much anything can be countered if you keep enough magic and traps in your deck. Heck, thats usually how i win most games.

Because I wanted to see if I could pick one of the games up today so me and my mates could play it. I ended up tracking down the last copy of Race for the Galaxy. Our first game was long but the learning curve isn't too high. We had fun and the second game went even better. We had a 4th player and had to re-explain everything so it took a while but I did much better in terms of strategy and points. We're very pleased thus far. I still plan on checking out Red Dragon Inn when my local store gets some back in.
I'll second Race for the Galaxy, Citadels and Dominion. All class-A games, right there.
On the collectible side, Fantasy Flight has actually begun a rather interesting experiment with their two "collectible" card games, Call of Cthulhu and Game of Thrones. Instead of releasing "sets" they have transformed the concept into a "Living Card Game" in which you can buy smaller packs of fixed cards, which a new "chapter" being released each month. I can vouch for GoT as a very good CCG, if you're into the IP. Costs tend to be lower, and the fact that you can "expand" the game with sets of fixed cards takes a lot of the $$ and pressure off to "have the best."
Otherwise, Red Dragon Inn (and everything made by Slugfest) is really fun and rather silly. Great "Beer 'n Pretzels" game.
Kung-Fu is a non-collectable, fast p[laying card game in which you literally just try to beat the crap out of your opponent while parrying and dodging their attacks. A lot of fun with more than 2 players, but still worthwhile. It's quick and easy and rather simple to break out for a spontaneous game.
The missus and I have been exploring Cold War, which is another Fantasy Flight card game a la Citadels. Stricktly two-player in which you play as either the CIA or KGB fighting over third-world countries and other objectives. A character system in some ways similar to Citadels keeps the action moving.
If you can find it (and you should be able to online) Pimp: The Backhanding was a card game released by White Wolf in which players take the roll of Pimps and Hos. I'll stop there, but suffice to say you can use a "Deep Fat Fryer" as a weapon. Don't play with women unless you know them really well.

Dominion is good too and has a very interesting mechanic, but for whatever reason it hasn't really become a staple.
(try it!)

Thirding Dominion.
Seriously dude, it's really good.

Killer Bunnies
Munchkin
Hex Hex.
It's like hot potato but crazier.
Red Dragon Inn
A game where you try and get the other players drunk as your characters are at a bar gambling.
Falling
An extremely fast paced game where you try to be the last to hit the ground as you fall through the sky.

My friend's level 40 King of Spades and L20 Queen of Diamonds both lost to suited Spades on the red river battlefield. Epic battle.

It is fun, when the site works.
( I went membership route and get a free booster each month, but to really compete you're going to have to shell out extra.)

Since you've got a few good recommendations for games already, I'll recommend some shops!
www.coolstuffinc.com - Local in Winter Park, FL. They've got a good loyalty program.
www.myriadgames.com - Local in Salem, NH.
Both are brick and mortar and "your local games store" stores. I've been to both and they're staffed by fantastic people that deserve patronage.
Oh yeah. They're also both like 20-30% off MSRP.
EDIT: Titan: The Arena. It's a fun, gambling-type game. It's only in-game gambling... unless, of course, you also make it out of game :-)
