UPDATE 13/08: New
four part, twenty minute developer walkthrough, with a whole heap of gameplay footage.
Star Wars: The Old Republic is BioWare's attempt at a Star Wars based MMO. Though it was only officially announced in October 2008, it's been in development since 2006. BioWare are renowned for their compelling RPG storylines, and they're lauding The Old Republic as "the first, truly story driven MMO". Be excited.
General stuff
- Full cinematic cutscenes
- Fully voice acted dialogue for all NPC's and players, including multiple voice actors for player characters for differentiation
- TOR is set about 3000 years before the movie, and about 300 years after the timeline of KotoR. Fortunately this also means there are a lot of Sith and Jedi around, so it won't be quite so jarring seeing a million Darth Sitharoth's on day one
- Some characters from KotoR will be in the game (eg. we know HK-47 is around)
- Four starting planets: Hutta, Tython, Korriban, Ord Mantell
- Completely unique stories for each class, including a hard-set end to each story line. There will be new content to extend each story line
-
We have to ignore the top of the hardcore,” says Walton, talking about those players who will simply ignore the story and min-max their way to the top end of the game. “We need to make a game that is accessible to the Star Wars fan, and the BioWare fan. Because really BioWare is a company that is about making a great RPG experience, not about making games for a hardcore MMO audience.
Gameplay
- Everything you'd expect from an MMO: PvP, high-end PvE and raids, in-game economy, crafting, auction house, etc etc
- Localized instancing - when interacting with quest NPC's you will be the only player in that instance
- Dialog selection is via a Mass Effect style wheel
- Some sort of space-based gameplay, which we don't know anything about yet
- No auto-attack
- Combat is intended to move a lot quicker than in traditional MMO's
MMOs are very slow-paced, it’s you versus one enemy, and you hit him fifteen times until he dies. That’s something we’ve consciously moved away from in Star Wars: The Old Republic. You’re fighting against multiple enemies, the action is fast-paced, there’s a lot more animations going on.
- Loot dependent upon light/dark side as well as class
- Choices can change the course of an instance (eg. kill/spare an NPC)
-
They want to reduce the grind – removing the tedious fetch 10 and kill 20 quests that plague the genre – and tie everything into their story
-
Star Wars: The Old Republic allows players to make moral choices, whether they are a Jedi serving the Republic or a Sith Warrior serving the Empire. The story of this character is written with the assumption that players will faithfully serve the Empire and perform their missions ruthlessly. However, there are many choices where players can choose to resist the temptations of the dark side and try to minimize the suffering that their missions might cause. Because the Sith Warrior is a servant of the Empire, he must perform his acts of compassion carefully. He might tell someone he was ordered to kill to get off-world and never return, thus completing his mission in the eyes of his master but without murdering someone who didn't particularly deserve it.
Classes and factions
There will be eight playable classes. So far four classes have been 'officially' announced. There will be two playable factions:
The Sith Empire
Bounty Hunter
- Think Boba Fett
- Primarily ranged combat class: flame thrower, rocket launches, stun grenades
- Starting world is Hutta
- Story arc called "The Great Hunt"
- Death From Above ability: Hovers in air firing down on target
Sith Warrior
- Officially announced at GamesCom (see GameSpot interview - lots of detailed info)
- Home world will be Korriban
- Inspired by Darth Vadar
- A "heavily armored Force user driven by darkness and rage"
- "attacks are all about uncontrollable rage and the overwhelming use of force"
- "Spender" abilities - powerful abilities available once the character has whipped himself into a rage - sounds a lot like rogue finishing moves in WoW
- Depending on character development, can function as either single or multiple target damage dealers
- Abilities include Force Jump and Force Choke
- Demo showed sith automatically deflecting blaster fire with their lightsaber
- Dual wielding mother fucking lightsabers
- Earn points by swiping and smashing, spend them on finishing moves

widowson's not-really-fail-proof Star Wars name generator
Stupid names are especially inexcusable considering how easy it is to make your Star Wars name.
First 2 letters of first two names is Star Wars first name
First 3 letters of last name is Start Wars last name.
Examples:
Barak Hussein Obama = Bahu Oba
George Herbert Bush = Gehe Bus
James Tiberius Kirk = Jati Kir
John Quincy Adams = Joqu Ada
I have yet to see it not work...

Let me ask a simple question.
Jedi Or Sith?
You mean which will we play? Dunno about you, but I'm gonna be a Kreian disciple, so it probably won't matter all that much which side I pick.
Or whichever gives me a T3-M4/R2-D2 as a companion character soonest. So probably Jedi.
Smuggler.

This game can't come out soon enough. Current speculation on the Bioware boards is Q1/Q2 '10.
So in that IGN E3 interview video, I believe a companion is shown along with a Sith player. Any idea what that species that is, O Great Geeks? I'm clueless.
Whichever one has dialogue options that let me say fuck off to the wrong headed Jedi Code and the psychopathic Sith Code both.

Yeah I had a look at that, nothing really jumped out at me. I'm running out of bandwidth so I'm having trouble verifying what's interesting :P
Also "completely removing the holy trinity" other games have promised this and failed, it'll be interesting if they pull this off and still leave a reasonable amount of group synergy.
that's freakin WEAK
totally gonna sith it up
this will be my first mmo
day one
I mean, something could potentially happen between now and release which would kill my excitement. But things would have to be pretty fucking horrendous to turn me off at this point.
I'm such a sucker for hype.
why they gonna start now?
Also the fast paced combat thing interests me but makes me hesitant, it makes me worry about how bad lag will affect the game.
I never asked for this!
It was a Dashade.

Hmm, I think I have one that doesn't work. My first two names are Adam Stephen. Adst is definitely not an acceptable first name. (I can't think of a common English name that consists of one vowel followed by three consonants, not counting "y," obviously.)
Or maybe I'll start out Sith, then conver to the Republic. Just to be different.
Failed.
Grpe Ren
o_O
I wonder what the next update is going to be. Probably another timeline thing, like what they released back in May about the Mandalorian Blockade. If they're building the timeline in reverse, it'll be "The Return of the Mandalorians".
Chan Wil? ._.
Really? I could've sworn I read that, on top of allying yourself with a faction (Republic/Sith), you actually accumulate light and dark side points a la KOTOR, which will change the game for you going forward.
Or maybe I just made all that up in my dream MMO...
The harder the rain, honey, the sweeter the sun.
I thought the same thing... But I can't find anything explicitly saying that a character MUST stay with a certain faction. It doesn't make sense, after all, to have a known evil Jedi allowed in the ranks of the Republic, or a kind Sith Lord allowed in the ranks of the Sith Empire.
Do you have a source for that?
Ok, I understand now.
If that's the case, it seems a little strange that you couldn't switch political factions. What kind of tolerance would the Jedi have for a dark sider? Why would a light side sith hang out with a bunch of brutal murderers and warmongers? It's a little strange. Basically, what Melkster said.
Still, curiousity wins out on this one. I'll play a light side sith just to see what it looks like.
Yea. That could work as a Star War-sy name.
Hmm... But what about when the leveling is over? I mean, of course a Jedi who falls into the Dark Side would have a much different story than a Sith who redeems himself. Obviously they wouldn't share the same content in terms of the prepackaged Bioware Story that has been talked so often by the official updates.
However, once those story lines have completed and players reach the "end game" - surely it makes no sense to allow a fallen Jedi to stay an official member of the Republic, or vice versa for a Sith.
Then again, I haven't read much about any end-game content at all.
::shrug::
I have a feeling it will be separated based on your political affiliation. so basically your choices would fall somewhere into this spectrum:
|-light-|-neut-|-dark-|<Jedi - Sith>|-light-|-neut-|-dark-|
so where your dark jedi options are near, but still more 'good' than light sith. this is mindless speculation but i can see it easily being like that
Now it's got me thinking, what will be more fiscally viable, smuggler or bounty hunter?
it's an interesting question
What do folks think of the odds that one or more types of droid will be a playable class? Right now I think that an HK unit is about the only thing that could unseat Bounty Hunter for me. Each faction would need a droid unit though for balance. I could almost see Sith getting the HKs, and Republic getting Astromechs, but... I'm skeptical.
My other thought is that we could see some type of droid engineer class, kind of like the pet classes in other MMOs (WoW hunters if I can be forgiven the comparison). Such a class would get better companions than other classes, in the form of upgradeable/advanced droids. Am I dumb for thinking this?
Does anyone else have theories or solid info on how droids will be handled?
I don't think there will be any light side sith or dark side jedi. I think there will be, let's say, shades of red in the sith, but they will never be "good"
