This is very very true. Despite how that will offend lots of people. People who are wrong.
Being a snowman collecting snowflakes however, offends no one!
I'm catholic. The only people who are offended by my statement are those who are uninformed and too overly sensitive.
Thats true again. Though I suspect that those kind of people are to busy funding Jack Thompson's war coffers for his fight and against evil games to notice the thread.
EDIT: this is actually a splendid little platformer. They should have made it a free VC download...

It would be ... sort of ... if Opera was available. Then we could just play the flash version (theoretically).
I picked up Yoshi's Island for the GBA a week or two ago (my first time playing!) and it made me instantly nostalgic for the glory days of the 2d platformer. And today's a slow day at work -- so I guess I know what I'm doing.

Christmas is Jesus' supposed birthday and nothing more.
That's what I understand it as.
And a pagan festival.
And a commercial spendathon.
And a holiday from work.
You would have found quite a few decorated trees in pre-Christian Europe around mid-winter. And much drinking and merriment (not much else to do with such short days).
As I understand it in pre-christian Europe there were always winter festivals. Of which that link details many. When Christianity spread it co-oped these celebrations into Christian ones. Likewise turning the Spring fertility festivals into Easter etc. That way converts didn't lose their fun times as it were.
Basically celebrations of the seasons predate and will postdate Christianity.
I plan to smash through all the levels again so that I can play one a day from now on. 'cos that will be Awesome.

explain to me the Pagan festivities, for I don't know all that much about religion, thus why I don't comment on it much.
Sucessful religions survive by mixing in other currently popular beliefs, kinda like a salesman targeting your intrests. Couple that with the Bible aluding to Christ's birth being around September and you realise that Christmas has very little to do with Christ. More to the point: It's extremely unlikely that december 25th is Jesus' birthday. The biblical account of the birth of Jesus just doesn't make sense for his birth to be in december.
How convinent is it that "Jesus' birthday" is the same time when a very popular pre-christian gift-giving pagen ritual used to be held?
If anything, Easter is the real religious holiday within the catholic church. I appreciate christmas, I appreciate the sentiments surrounding it, the mythos, the good feelings, the happy message it sends... but let's be realistic. It's not Jesus' birthday. It can be a celebration of the acknowledgement that jesus was born (even though it rarely is) but it is not, in the litteral sense, Jesus' birthday.
Is is weird that if I find a random flash platformer I won't give it time of day. But if you tell me that Nintendo had something to do with it (or Sega) I immediately love it at least twice as hard.
I think knowing it's by the big two puts my mind to rest - and lets me know I'm not going to be jipped, or short changed by some stupid part 10 levels in. Which kinda unfairly makes me rate their games better.
Also - Well put TheSonicRetard. But Easter was a co-oped fertility festival so again the date of any 'rebirth' of jesus being near Easter would be purely coincidental. If of course it happened at all.

It's been a long time since I've gone to church, and an even longer time since I was in sunday school, but as I recall there is actually an argument for the resurrection of jesus being around easter time. I just can't remember what it was.
I went to a remarkably open and well-informed sunday school, hence why I know about christmas and it's pagen roots, as well as Easter's importance.

That's great. :^: - what's depressing is that the school you went to is "remarkable" for that very reason.
If you watch the intro, Chubby says he was in a game where the designers thought they were funny and it shows a picture of him staring down at his carrot... repositioned. It's not that funny of a joke, but I laughed out of it being so unexpected from a game with the Nintendo name on it.
But Easter was a co-oped fertility festival /quote]
I've run across an argument that nop, there was no pagan festival at the time.
Sadly, t'was in a book, and a year ago.

Er. Ok. Well, off-topic, but I'll bite.
There are arguments that Easter isn't pagan because they argue the entomology of the word 'easter' comes from the Germanic auferstehen/auferstehung for 'resurrection.' Which whilst interesting is not conclusive - there are many alternative entomolgies, many of which are pagan - or of other faiths. Regardless this of no relevance to the discussion.
The point is that the spring Vernal Equinox (a pagan celebration) is a festival celebrated in many forms by many cultures. All cultures traditionally have celebrated the onset of spring as it means the break of winter, the start of the agricultural season, and birth and fertility. It is likely these celebrations began just a primative humans began wandering around africa - let alone establishing "proper" religions.
In most cultures it was typically a festival honouring women and featured lots of yonic imagery (yonic is the female equivalent of phallic - and one of my favourite words :winky: ). Easter, being Christianity's adaption of the Spring festival was used to both supplant the pagan beliefs whilst spreading through Europe, and to reduce the role of women in the process - as rather than celebrating vaginal birth - it became a celebration of rebirth without the need of vaginas. Sounds ridiculous I know. But whether it was intentional or not - the onset of the big 3 Abhramic religions had the effect of phenomenally reducing the importance and status of women.
tl;dr Easter comes from a celebration that is an inherent part of human culture since we most likely wandered about in caves. No amount of saying "no but it's different to the other ones 'cos..." changes that.
EDIT: Damn that's hige. Sorry to rant like that. I try to keep that to skeptobot only.

EDIT: Beat'd... but mine was more verbose.
I'm only through December 4th, and that one easily took me 10 tries to get all the snowflakes.
Nintendo make you work for your free gifts bitch.

Is this on VC? If it isn't... why the hell not? This is exactly the kind of shit Nintendo needs to do with VC.
Exactly. When I turn on my Wii Xmas morning I expect this game to have downloaded over night as a Xmas gift from big N.
They would be fools not too.
EDIT: Oh shit. I am going home for Xmas. My Parents don't have Wifi! No gifts for me.
But seriously - this is exactly the kind of shit Nintendo should be doing. Showing the worth of old genres.
Though maybe as half the crap on VC (in the UK) doesn't come close to this game - they may not want to be too obvious.
