I watched Blade Runner right after this yesterday.
I still don't know how to feel about Public Enemies. I liked the gunfights and crazy Texas lawmen who roll-dodge bullets and know more than Christian Bale about how to catch criminals though.
I'm just saying if I were on the Oscar committee I wouldn't curve someones performance based on the fact that they lost or gained weight.
I'd go by how convincing their acting was alone.
the only person off the top of my head who I can think of winning an oscar for a role where they gained a ton of weight was Robert DeNiro in Raging Bull.
And if you want to argue that his performance as Jake LaMotta was gimmicky

no one does this
you're imagining things
it's common knowledge that losing or gaining weight for a role goes hand in hand with pretending to be retarded.
or more recently gay. gay is the new retarded.
also this movie had Dark Was The Night, Cold Was The Ground in it, which was cool.
uh I really wasn't feeling Bale's performance though.
edit: Charlize Theron must have gained weight for Monster. Makeup alone can't turn you from a goddess into the kind of fugly sociopathic whoremonster she played.

well, I feel sorry for you.
That's one of my favorite movies. I think the performance outweighed anything that might have been gimmicky about it. plus Deniro probably set the standard.

all I know is that scene in Mystic River where Penn finds out his daughter is dead made Gary Oldman's performance in Leon seem subdued and understated.
additionally, I think there should be a rule that you not introduce new middle-aged white dudes with the same mustaches that everyone else has in the third act of the film, and have them place phone calls that are shortly revealed to have been totally irrelevant
This movie was as much about John Dillinger during the 30s as it was about the effect he had on Criminal Organizations and the rise of the FBI. That scene illustrated that. Wrong as Myth.

I felt sad at the ending. you all know what happens

do you think about what you say
like, at all
well the character they gave him wasn't much more than a cardboard cut out.

i thought parts of the movie were cool, like the gun fights
but overall i was pretty bored watching it
I separate my thoughts from my words.
It makes for the most gratifying social exchanges.
what
you can't be serious
Maybe I'm thinking of his win for Mystic River, which was a travesty in its own right.
let me see if i understand you
you're either saying that
a.) all actors who gain weight are taking roles that are retarded or gay
or
b.) it's just as bad to play a retarded person or a gay person as gaining weight for a role
in the case of a.) what
in the case of b.) you're just saying actors shouldn't play anything unless it's fairly close to exactly how they are in person?
he beat out murray that year didn't he?
