Lesse, games, I heartilly recommend infamous, easily the best game I've played for the ps3 so far. Disgaea 3 is also nice if you like tactical JRPGS, not a long stretch since you seem to like the idea of valkyria chronicles.
Controllers can be recharged through the accompanying usb-mini cable(It's really really short though, so get a longer one if you want to be able to play while charging your controller.)
If you're getting SF4, I'm assuming you like fighting games?
Get blazblue. Shits awesome.
Or KoF12 if you prefer something closer to SF, but online apparently sucks, even with patch (from some reports anyway, best to wait for a few days to confirm).
Uncharted definitely. Also, PixelJunk Eden, PixelJunk Monsters, Shatter, and Flower off of PSN, at the least. Burn Zombie Burn is also quite entertaining.
Are you absolutely set on getting a PS3 this week? There are rumors (which heavily towards being true) that a new slim design will be coming out - this could also come with a price drop. If you can wait a month or two to see, it might be worth it.
Other than that, do you have a 360 or Gaming PC? If not, here's what I've played and would recommend:
Uncharted, Burnout Paradise, Resistance 1/2, Killzone 2, Flower, Fl0w, Pixeljunk Eden & Monsters (and Encore for both), eh, I'm going to stop here because there's too many when i think of multi-plat titles. Get the above stuff, though it sounds like shooters aren't your thing.
Controllers can be recharged through the accompanying usb-mini cable(It's really really short though, so get a longer one if you want to be able to play while charging your controller.)
That works, but I would say your best option is one of these:
Charge when your PS3 is off, no cables draped across the room, and only about 1/3 more expensive than a pair of extended-length USBs.
Also, what you don't see in the photo is the subtle red/green glow around the holders that tells you whether the controller is fully charged or not. Classier than a mahogany minibar.
I recently bought a PS3 too and loved the idea of Valkria Chronicles, but beware that it isn't a guaranteed hit with everybody: I just couldn't stand the mind numbingly god awful dialogue and writing and just stopped playing.
"So, are you going to join the military?"
"No, I want to be a teacher. I want to contribute--in my own way."
"'In your own way,' huh. (Long, thoughtful pause). That's deep stuff!"
This is an actual conversation in the game. I might be paraphrasing a little, but I'm not exaggerating the stupidity. It is amazingly bad, but not so bad it's good. It just makes you embarrassed to be playing it.
Edit:
A blu-ray player that can play MGS4, Uncharted, and will be able to play Heavy Rain, GoW3, and the Last Guardian is totally worth it though, I'm glad I bought it.

It really does improve once you open up the city and stuff. I think the story is actually pretty good, and the middle of the game is very enjoyable. The beginning is slow, but its trying to teach you, and the end is eh. But the middle is really good gaming.
theres an option in the settings menu to install a different operating system even. and replacing/upgrading the HDD is childishly simple, and theres instructions on how to do it in the owners manual.

note that if you're actually going to install linux, the option he's talking about is basically fdisk and a bootloader.

Uh, more like 15x more expensive. How does 15' for $2.06 sound? Might as well add some HDMI cables while you're at it.
I would actually put a pass on Little Big Planet. It gets old fast.
Sad Panda. Maybe I'll rent it.
What! It really doesn't.
There are over a million maps out for it, and the absolute best co-op play. It's a definite purchase
Ratio of good maps to broken/bad/boring maps?
Couldn't really put a number on it personally, but I really urge you to get this game.
I am a game whore. Games don't hold my attention for very long before moving on, but this game was instantly in my top 5 games of all time after about 10 minutes of playtime.
The standard story levels and challenges are really great. But some of the user-made levels deliver a better experience then a large portion of retail games that I have played in my gamer life. Truly amazingly well done.
You should be able to find a copy used somewhere...I got really lucky with mine. Ordered a PS3 from sony-style.ca with my sony mastercard points, and it came with a bonus random game. The game was TNA Impact. (BOOO!) Found a few used copies at a place where the more used copies they have, the lower the prices get. Ended up getting $25 for TNA, and they had 3 LBPs priced at $24, so it was free essentially. I went back a few days later, and they had 1 left, and it was back up to $49.
[edit]
I would also recommend a charging dock. As cheap as monoprice is, its nice to have it charge while the PS3 is off. Sure, you can plug the USB end into another powered device, like a laptop, etc, but they also have to be on. Alternatively you could get a wall plug with USB port on it. iPhones/iPod Touches come with them.

Valkyria Chronicles (you can try out a demo first)
Dead Space (if you didn't have it on your 360)
Burn Zombie Burn is quite fun if you can play it with two people on the same computer. This is also very true of LBP (I have far more fun with it with two/three players in the room than when I play solo). You can rent LBP first to see whether you like it. It's extremely cute though :winky:
It isn't Valkyria Chronicles's story or dialogue that's extremely good, it are the characters. You will have a few favourites in your squad, that you really like and feel bad about when they get shot down. So I would say the excellent gameplay and the likeable characters are Valkyria Chronicles's strength (I don't think you can ever expect good dialogue from a JRPG, also because of the cultural differences between the East and West).

That's to say nothing of the art style the game has or the soundtrack - both of which are beautiful.

I'm pretty sure the usual bell curve applies here. The good thing is that the quality of community rating has improved since launch -- Back around December and January, crappy trophy-whore levels were all over the front page while good stuff sank further back, but these days, that crowd seems to have gotten bored and left, leaving the place to the more creative people who are sticking with it for the long haul.
Even better, though, will be when the web-based linking and queuing system goes up. I haven't heard about it for months, but when this happens it will be amazing: You'll be able to link directly to an LBP level in a forum or blog post, and then add it to your to-play queue.
Who turns their PS3 off? That's what Folding is for.
People who don't want sky-high electric bills and hot as hell rooms :P
True dat. I have a 60GB PS3 (Old 90nm chips) and a Jasper 360 (60nm). On the hot days I generally avoid playing on my ps3 and use the computer or xbox just because of the heat.
Also, if they were really serious about curing cancer etc, they should just give Folding trophies.
I’ll tell you what happens in Demon’s Souls when you die. You come back as a ghost with your health capped at half. And when you keep on dying, the alignment of the world turns black and the enemies get harder. That’s right, when you fail in this game, it gets harder. Why? Because fuck you is why.

lol, awesome.
Thanks for the advice guys. Can't wait for Wednesday.

Another vote for infamous, and I didn't see a recommentation for Red Faction Guerrilla. Nothing beats zooming along the awesomely rendered Martian landscape to an EDF facility and strategically dismantling it with your hammer and a few explosives, and watching towers crumble and fall, taking out other buildings as they go down.
edit - I'm shocked at the lack of Resistance recommendations. Both Resistance Fall of Man and Resistance 2 are great FPS games. The story isn't presented the best (though it's fairly interesting if you dig into it) and they are really solid, fun shooters. Big satisfying guns, big ugly aliens to shoot them at. Resistance 2 also has a really good set of online features.

These 2 are must haves.

I'm not going to worry about the price drop. Everything eventually gets cheaper, and I figure the MGS/Killzone 2 bundle is a pretty good deal.
Disgaea is on my list for sure, but I don't want to jump into that until I get through Valkyrie Chronicles.
I'm really going to be disappointed though if that software emulation backwards computability update doesn't drop.
I didn't own a PS2 and there are a handful of games I'd really like to go back and play.
(I like shooters as much as the next guy, but outside of Goldeneye and Halo, I don't really do the console shooter thing).

You're obviously shopping at the wromg places. Of course, shipping is quite a bit more, but it's not that bad if you're buying quite a bit of stuff.
Get some HDMI cables from there too.
