This isn't the first time they've nerfed the classes. The problem is that they never go far enough or break something else in the process.
Or, if you remember way back when, manage to nerf them too much. For a while you could get resists to like 70% for all types of magic (been forever since I played so I don't remember exactly which stats those were off the top of my head), which made BW/Sorcs useless. But it also made Magus/Engi useless to the point it was impossible to even try. So of course they dialed it back all the way.....at the same time they 'fixed' an internal calculation bug which almost doubled the size of all AoEs. OH GOD LOOK AT ALL THE FIRE. Yeah, went great.
The problem with BW/Sorc is, and always has been, the crit mechanic. Which makes them terrible solo, as running high mechanic makes you blow yourself up in seconds, but of course in a premade with one of those lovely group heal spammers, was a complete non-factor as the crit-on-every-other-hit-or-better mage just walked through the enemy lines doing enough damage to make godzilla jealous.
It's been pointed out to the devs, repeatedly, but they just don't seem to get it. Or maybe they do, but realize that changing that mechanic means reworking how the classes function quite a bit and just don't want to bother. Anyways, either this nerf will be ineffective, as usual, or be too much rendering the classes useless, which is just as bad.
Its a pretty easy fix for the mechanic, instead of a %chance to blow yourself up, make it a %heal debuff that stacks with other debuffs.
Means the BW/Sorc can build up to high crit levels, but as soon as they start getting attacked, they have to go back down to base or die. Which brings the glass canon concept to life. Hugely damaging when ignored, otherwise very weak when attacked.

Yup. At this speedy rate, it'll only be two more years until White Lions are useful (outside of the occasional bug which gets patched out in a week).

MWO: Adamski
(they nerfed both a long time ago, and also multiple times already)
At one point they became overnerfed and useless against people with resists
