I'd be legitimately surprised if this saw more theaters than Moon. While it has a substantially larger budget, as far as I can tell it has received no promotion whatsoever.
Given that it's not being released until Christmas
That's a pretty bold claim to make
It just does not strike me as a film to see any sort of widespread release.
Really?
A renowned director makes a film starring a number of famous actors, including a dead academy award winner
I think you're overestimating Gilliam's box office pull just a little
This might be Gilliam's best chance at ever getting a commercially successful film and it looks like it might already be blown if the marketing doesn't pick up
The only real problem with Chris Columbus' HP movies is that he just has the actors stand around and chat about what's happening. That's what makes the movies so boring.
Most everything else about them is actually pretty good.

Gilliam might've been good for Half Blood Prince.
I'm thinking of a certain scene in particular.
And the first two weren't bad. They're the Matilda of the series, and it applies to the books too.
The third is when things start getting serious, and the films shift tone accordingly.
Which is exactly why Terry Gilliam would've been a terrible choice. The genre does not lend itself well to visions of social dystopia, which is what Gilliam's style is built around.

It could've worked with the darker films, but he probably would have wound up strangling the kids after the first few days. Check the commentary on 12 Monkeys, he's terrible with them.

the little girl from baron von muchausen said she was terrified during most of the shoot
I'm going to spoiler it just incase somebody gets offended. I'm not a film student so I probably missed some stuff but this is what I picked up on
Well the main thing is how it is completely different from any film I've seen in a long time. They manage to cover Ledger's absense really well and it works in the film, which in massive part, is thanks to the unique aspects of the film. Farrell contributes the most out of him, Depp and Law but they all do the role well.
So Ledger goes through the mirror and into the imaginarium and becomes one of the three actors.
The imagery and themes in the film are handled well. You've got a world which is run down, ugly and basically shit. Then you are transported into the "imaginarium" and you're in this overly colourful world. Just this contrast is great.
Tom Waits as the devil is awesome, he does an excellent job.
Some of the CGI is a little soft and bits look a little off but eh, I saw past it. I think it is a film that I might enjoy a little more a 2nd time around because the performances from the actors are great but they get lost in the imagery.

and I'll probably see this just for Tom Waits, because Tom Waits is awesome
Dont make me have to take off the belt.
TRAILER.
looks so good

he's not nearly as witty as he seems to think he is
"If you're going to play tiddly winks, play it with man hole covers."
- John McCallum
Also some of the stuff reminds me of Mirror Mask
12 monkeys was probably the most successful
he's also had some enormous flops though, most notably munchausen
wikipedia says the us release was over 3000 theaters
which is basically as big as it gets
he was jk rowling's pick to direct the first harry potter and the studio straight refused
but i've never read the books or seen the movies so i dunno

Terry Gilliam didn't hurt you, MGM did.
guess what, still just as huge of a problem!

Long time ago. Don't really remember it.
the little girl from baron von muchausen said she was terrified during most of the shoot
I went to see this Friday and wondered why nobody is talking about it, then I realised it doesn't come out in the US until Christmas.
EDIT: Oh yeah forgot. It was good.
what was good about it
Augh jealous.
