Fuck Sheriff Joe - Hostile Computer Takeover Edition

AngelHedgieAngelHedgie Registered User regular
edited October 2009 in Debate and/or Discourse
From the Taser Sodomy thread, we have this tidbit:
The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office sent more than a dozen officers to county computer rooms in its Wednesday raids and takeover of a computer system that interlinks police and court agencies.

The MCSO sent deputies and others to county offices and told computer technicians who operate the Integrated Criminal Justice Information System that the Sheriff’s Office was taking over the system.

The $25 million computer system allows law enforcement, prosecutors, probation officers, public defenders and the courts to communicate with one another electronically. County officials familiar with the MCSO takeover of the system said the sheriff’s officers showed up Wednesday told computer technicians to step aside, posted officers at entrances and exits, and took over “management control” of the system.

One official, who asked not be identified, said it was intimidating to have such a significant number of MCSO officers show up. Some of the deputies were armed, he said.

The computer system is more of an electronic communication link among various agencies than a database. It has handled more a half-billion information movements since its inception in 2005.

The MCSO contends it was worried about the integrity of the computer system, which has seen budget cuts in recent years. Sheriff Joe Arpaio has sought to take control of the system and has been battling the Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in court over who controls it.

The board is asking the Maricopa County Superior Court to block the takeover. A hearing is set for Friday afternoon.

The MCSO changed the passwords for access to the computer system, but cannot access other agencies’ databases, according to the county official.

Yeah, this is just royally fucked up. Not to mention that there are real serious conflicts of interest for the sheriff's office to be in control of these computers as opposed to the more neutral Board of Supervisors. I also love the budget cuts excuse, as there might not have been budget cuts if the county didn't have to literally pay out millions thanks to the good Sheriff's fuckups. When will this stop?

I would just like to say, for the record, that Sheriff Joe will never be removed from power.

Voting him out wouldn't work, as he'd just say the polls were tampered with by his opponent and arrest and murder the guy. The Feds won't step in because he'll just have them killed.

The only way he'll leave power is if he dies.

    And refused to do so.

    With no apparent repercussions.

    Oh, wait, there's this:
Hendershott said the Sheriff's Office is conducting a criminal investigation into suspected mismanagement of the computer system.

He said the investigation targets Superior Court presiding Judge Barbara Mundell, County Manager Smith and other county personnel.

He did not provide details on the investigation.

    Yeah. No intimidation at all.

Sheriff Joe's jurisdiction appears to end wherever he damn well pleases.

Yeah, because basically pulling a coup by a guy who is already monitored probably by the government couldn't be taken out at the least by public opinion? Killing someone who is elected over you is sure fire way to get your butt stomped.

Seriously, as messed up as this guy is, if he did something like that, he would be out. He's getting pretty good crap for this power play, which I don't see how he'll get away with.

It just seems like every attempt at doing anything to him results in him taking more power, killing more people, and costing the state more money, with no actual action ever taking place. He kills people, murders their pets, slanders political opponents, raids government office (this isn't the first time), and oversteps his authority on a pretty regular basis, and nothing seems to change.

Eventually you just stop expecting something good to come of this and wait for the prick to die of natural causes. Like Castro.

you cant win an election against him in the first place. Oh you have a rally next week? See how much your constitutional right to peacefully assemble means to this guy. You wanna make a public statement? the first amendment doesnt exist there either? oh and your personal savings/campaign warchest/donation all belong to him now. He has the ability to destroy anyone who even thinks about running an election against him.

you forget, hes the guy that built his own modern day internment camp in the middle of the city and no one batted an eye

It sounds like he's pushing the last nerves of the state government, actually. Which is really not a smart thing to do.

Also, I recall reading that there was a federal investigation against him concerning his actions as of late. Can't remember the source, though.

I've become so desensitized to stories about this guy that nothing surprises me anymore. If a story came out about his staff literally raping dogs in public on tape and then arresting the people who made the tape who later suspiciously died while in jail I would honestly not be surprised at all.

And no, nobody is going to do anything to him, state, federal or otherwise. He's going to die old(er) and wealthy never having spent a day or jail for his heinous shit. I would be willing to put good money on it. It's not good, obviously, but when you have as much pull as this guy does and the support of the people who put you in power you're basically untouchable. Same as Stalin was, same as Kim Jong Il, same as Saddam Hussein would have been if he hadn't gotten invaded.

Even if he does somehow get voted out of office it's not a guarantee (or even likely) that he'll end up being prosecuted because of it. His extensive network of bribes and potential blackmail victims will doubtless still be intact and it's not as though the fanatical devotion toward him among the deputies and general population is going to evaporate. He wouldn't even have to threaten people himself; I'm sure his constituents would do it for him.

Also, any attempt to arrest is going to be a huge clusterfuck with thousands of drooling morons surrounding his house, hand in hand, to prevent any sort of arrest, while Joe mugs for the cameras in the background. Don't get your hopes up.

At this point nobody would be surprised if any fed that set foot in his part of AZ was arrested and found with unlicensed weapons, a large cache of drugs, and child porn. And at least two would be shot in the back trying to flee the scene.

Seriously, the dude's main go to cops seem to have no issues planting evidence, arresting people for absolutely nothing, or generally doing shit like this. Storm in, armed takeover of a system, and when ordered to stop he'll drop that he's totally investigating you since you ordered him to stop, and you know how those investigations tend to go if you keep trying to make him stop.

But yes, by now the feds should have stormed his compound and locked up pretty much every person involved.

^ Pretty much this. The area around Joe's jurisdiction (and apparently most of Arizona, is some of the stories from Arizonan forumers are to be believed) for all intents and purposes seems to be your standard tinpot third-world dictatorship, except it's sitting smack in the middle of the US. He's pretty much got total control in his domain and once you're on his shit list you're basically fucked, sweating your ass off in tent city with nobody on the outside who's willing or able or even brave enough to help you.

EDIT: So basically, kind of like the worst images of the Mexican prison system, except that unlike in Mexico, if you're in there unjustly you can't expect anyone to help you out just because you're a US citizen.
