So I've been stuck ignoring major releases and game news since my current PC is not quite up to snuff, however I am currently almost done building a new tank of a desktop that should run most anything this gen at least on medium.
So what have I missed out on in the last 2-3 years in terms of single player pc games that rocked your socks off?
If there are any super sweet multiplayer games I'd love to hear about them too, I really want to expand my gaming collection. However please no MMO recommendations, I don't think I'll have MMO time, and if I do I have a few choice games I'm peeking at.
Orange Box - HL2, HL2:Episode 1 and 2, Portal, Team Fortress 2 in one very cheap and great package. Portal and HL2 for singleplayer, TF2 for the multiplayer goods.
GoGamer is selling Prince of Persia for pretty cheap this weekend. I really enjoyed it on the 360, but it's definitely not what you would call a challenging game.

It's more of an aesthetic experience really. Like a ballet.
If you are building a monster computer, then crysis is pretty fun. Download the demo and the editor and play through a couple of times, being sure to experiment quite a bit.
I haven't played it but Dawn of War II is on my first buy list once I get a new graphics card.
You might want to reconsider
I mean, the single player is alright, and I don't really give a shit about balancing or whatever the fuck, but it is wildly different from the original
There are no massive armies of many different units. You basically get three buildings and only a few kinds of units. The emphasis is heavy on micromanaging
If that's what you're looking for, that's cool I guess. I was a little disappointed
I ask because you mention running games "hopefully at medium."
I can tell you that if you spend even as little as $500 for a brand new built machine, you should be running games at high settings and high resolutions.
For reference, I upgraded my old PC with a new mobo ($50), 4 gigs of dual channel DDR2 800 ram ($50), a 2.8 Ghz Core 2 Duo ($100), and a Radeon 4850 ($100). So for $300 for the upgrade, I brought my PC up to date, and let me tell you: This thing is playing every game I throw at it at maximum high quality settings at 1680x1050 resolution at absurdly high framerates.
Just so you know, you're probably in for a surprise at how well your machine will run games after you do this!

Single player is actually quite fun with another person playing co-op. Two squads for each of you allows each person to adapt it a bit to their own playstyle.
The multiplayer really is about micromanagement, though. I prefer the victory point mode of play to the basekill. Having to get to an objective away from your base makes it more interesting.
If you end up playing HL2 and the expansions Check out the synergy mod which allows co-op over the internet. I've been wanting to do that for months now but none of my friends are interested.
If anyone is interested my AIM is: EvrythingWzTaken - or PM me and I'll get it... sometime
It probably goes without saying but.... Deus Ex. We will disown you if this isn;t the first game installed on the PC.
If you still want something more (olol) try Oblivion. Costs next to nothing, looks beautiful on even my rubbish PC and it has nudity mods! That last one may not matter to you.

Fallout 3 is better than Oblivion in every conceivable way
You guys beat me too it. The PC version is definately the best version of the game in every way possible.
And it's still frustrating as hell.
Also your enjoyment of Empire Total War will depend on how willing you are to ignore the fact that the AI is dumber than a bag of rocks.
Buy the Orange Box. HL2 saga is a must-play, Portal is fabulous, and TF2 is the most fun I've had in a multiplayer shooter since Perfect Dark.
Civilization IV will take all of your free time. It is amazing.
Dead Space is pretty awesome.
Bioshock is pretty awesome as well.
OH if you buy a new PC it's compulsory for you to play Crysis. Not sure if Crysis or Crysis Warhead is better. Probably Warhead? They are both pretty awesome though so it's all good, and the story is fairly non-existant so don't worry about skipping the first for that reason.
Check out Dark Messiah of Might and Magic if you enjoy having fun at all, though. Its one of those games that reminds you of why you play video games in the first place.

Thank you, I was begining to think that no one else had actually played it, and/or were devoid of good taste.

The Witcher - singleplayer RPG, great game.

Filthy lies.
You guys are both exaggerating. It is somewhere in the middle. Graphics are out of this world though.
It's somewhere in the middle alright.
The middle of a pile of shit.

I would highly recommend post-patch Medieval 2 Total War over this, Empire was such a disappointment.
In terms of MP, TF2 and L4D, but you already have those.
Also, there are a ton of really great games coming out of european PC companies:
Mount and blade
Kings bounty
Stalker
You're a disappointment

Epic tactical/strategy game! So much fun.
My computer is pretty crappy, so all I can recommend are older games like Deus Ex, Vampire : Bloodlines etc

On second thought, definitely lacking good taste
